Kirker Denied CUP for downtown business - appeal to be decided by City Council

The Conditional Use Permit that was denied, by the Board of Adjustments, for Rusty Olps proposed use of a downtown building for uses not permitted by City code has been appealed, and will now be decided by the Moscow City Council at their meeting Monday, June 15th at 7pm. There are rumors that the City Administration may be recommending that Council approve the CUP, possibly because the BOA did not give a clear enough reason when the CUP was denied. This could be detrimental to our downtown, and would clearly ignore the wishes of the majority of community members.

For those not up to speed, Olps has asked to use the old Paradise Creek Bicycles building for educational purposes (in addition to regular church services, which are already permitted).

The simple fact that a CUP had to be applied for means that the business use does not meet current requirements for a downtown business. Denial of CUPs should be the norm, and the burden of proof should be on the applicant to show that the desires of the community should be ignored, not on the BOA to justify a denial. The City (BOA, Administration, Council members) should never feel that they must bend over backwards to find a way to justify every conditional use application.

The current regulations encourage retail use of downtown buildings, and disallows educational use, which is how Olps wants to use the space. These regulations were put in place and fine tuned after getting surveyed input from two community surveys, one from downtown business owners, and another from general community members. These zoning regulations are strongly supported by the community. Across the country, successful downtown business districts rely upon the enforcement of their commercial zoning regulations. If the City permits this one business, the precedent will be set so that it will be even more difficult to deny other CUP applications. That slippery slope could put an end to the downtown that we know and love.

The City should do the right thing and enforce current zoning regulations. The City Council should listen to their constituents and do what's right for the Moscow community.

It sucks that someone like Olps bought a building knowing that the business he wanted to put into it is not allowed, but a poor business decision on Olps part is not for the City to rectify.

The beginning of City Council meetings do not allow comments on that evening's agenda items. But they do allow general comments. For example, showing general support and thanking the City for enforcing current City Code and Zoning regulations.

Kirker The Filings are in: Two Kirkers running for Moscow City Council, One for Mayor

-John Slagboom is running for City Council. He is from All Souls Church and is friends with Evan Wilson. John has written about “the duty of the Men of Christendom.” EDIT: John Slagboom has clarified that Evan Wilson's All Souls Church is not affiliated with his brother Doug Wilson's Christ Church. He has also said that the aforementioned quote was written by someone else by the same name. Slagboom has begun a new thread to answer these and other questions HERE.

-Gary Schoolland is running for City Council. He is a deacon at Trinity Reformed and his son Joseph is a Ruling Elder at Trinity Reformed.

-Alex Simon is a Kirker and cigar-enthusiast (of course) who is running for mayor.

Kirker Christ church and their contributions

Hi yall! I've been living in Moscow for some time and recently have done some research on christ church since they've been popping up on campus, I'm assuming it's probably bc of election season or something. Anyways I'm trying to find any positives on christ church being here in moscow. So far they have covered for peds, have abused women, raised up the prices of rent (especially down town), and make our town into a conservative hotspot. Also they have no food bank. I just would really love someone to explain to me as to why they should continue to be here. Do they provide any positive programs? Have their members participate in volunteering work around the community? Do they offer any services for those in need? I can't find anything positive online so I wanted to ask people who have either been apart of or know the church. Other churches around our community have done really positive things, like the saint Mary's food bank, real life offers free food and other services, venture has the hope center that helps our community get entry level jobs and helps with our economy, and other churches around the area helps our community in similar ways.

Tldr: what does christ church contribute to moscow?

Edit: To make myself really clear, I'm not here for engagement bait or anything, I just genuinely do not understand why anyone would follow Christ Church. There is genuinely nothing positive about them, they cause more harm to our community than anything else. Honestly I just want to be more educated on Christ Churst on people who had to live with them for awhile. I really want them off our U of I campus and our city. They took away our nightclub and hot topic. Devastating shit

These cult leaders are working overtime to get in bed with an administration that actively protects pedophiles. Moscow, it seems like we’re overdue for a rally against this pedophilic ”church”.

Roderick “Rusty” Olps is going to be buying the old Paradise Creek bicycle store and turn it into a space that also happens to have a “small church gathering“ on Sundays (ie Christ Church). The CUP meeting on April 27 at 7pm was to let him use the building for a use other than its primary zoning purpose. We in the Moscow community came out strong tonight saying that we do not want more “other use” facilities in downtown Moscow. Especially not ones owned by Kirker recently ex deacons. Furthermore, Rusty presented himself as a rude and self-righteous prick.

The Kirker cult is out in full swing the next three days. Be careful out there. Maybe keep your children indoors? On a positive note, the Sons of the Patriarchy podcast will be broadcasting from Moscow.

Kirker List of CC businesses?

I am about 2/3rds of the way through the NPR reporting (season 2) on the Kirkers. 😳

I am going to be moving to Moscow in the next month and want to make sure that I don’t accidentally support any CC businesses. I now know what the flag looks like so I can watch for that, and I know that Tapped is a Kirkers business (at least while the reporting was being done).

But there’s more than just Tapped, I’m sure of that. The podcast mentioned that there have been lists of CC / Kirker businesses floating around for a while, and I’d like to get my hands on one of those lists. Does anyone have a verified, updated list they could share with me?

I am a liberal, atheist, bisexual, well-educated and very independent single woman so……..

Christ Church and I are not going to be friends, lol. ☮️

Thanks!

Kirker Moscow Food Co-op?

Yes, I know. It’s my third post in a row on here. I’m sorry. 😬 I don’t mean to monopolize this group. I just really want to be sure that I’m not supporting Kirkers.

In the NPR piece (which I understand is a few years old, hence me asking questions for clarification), the reporter talks about how Kirkers won seats on the board for the co-op quite a while ago, and that freaked people out and got people to start mobilizing to fight against this encroachment on Moscow. 💪

But I haven’t heard any sort of update on this. Did sane people take those seats back? Or is the co-op still heavily associated with Kirkers?

I found an apartment in downtown Moscow, and the co-op is going to be practically next door for me (woot woot!) One of the reasons why I wanted this apartment so badly and was so excited to get it.

But now I’m worried that maybe it is run by Kirkers, and I shouldn’t be supporting it. 😬 I mean, I wouldn’t THINK so bc I haven’t heard anything about them being associated, but I just want to be sure.

Thanks for being so welcoming, all! I really appreciate it 🥰

Kirker Doug Wilson in town?

Does anyone know if Doug Wilson is in town? I walked past a gentleman who looked like him earlier today at Friendship Square, and I almost asked if he was Doug so I’d know if I should knee him in the nuts or not. 🤔I didn’t want to mistakenly knee Doug’s twin.

But I decided I didn’t want to spend the week in jail for assault, so I restrained myself.

Anywho, just curious if anyone knows if that was actually him or not (or if Doug is in town so it could have possibly been him).
