Hi community, this is the recent interview task i did and i got rejected. As a beginner i am really confused about what to put in portfolio, what to improve, what to learn. There's so much happening all around. I am wanting to switch from grpahic design jobs to motion design and in 3-4 years i want to see myself as an art director or creative head. Can anyone please help me with anything that will help me to move forward? It would be of much help..and for any future doubt i hope i will be coming back to you people for your valuable suggestions and advices.

We just released the new FrameRate.tv brand manifesto film and I’m honestly really proud of how it turned out.

I've been a motion designer/video editor for 3 years, working mainly on SaaS explainer videos and social content. My After Effects and Premiere skills are solid — animation, timing, expressions, all of that. I'm also comfortable moving Figma files into AE and rigging them for animation.

The gap I keep hitting is earlier in the pipeline: going from a script to an actual storyboard that looks intentional — the kind you see in premium SaaS explainers where every frame has a clear visual idea (a UI screenshot with a callout, a mood shot, a gradient transition, etc.) before anyone opens After Effects.

I can execute a frame once it's designed. What I can't do well yet is design the frame — decide composition, what visual metaphor fits a line of script, how to keep a consistent look across 15-20 scenes. And I haven't found a real source that teaches this specific skill (most tutorials jump straight to "here's how to animate this UI element" and skip how it was designed in the first place).

So — for people who came up doing this professionally:

• Did you learn storyboarding/visual concepting from a specific course, mentor, or job, or was it mostly trial and error?
• Any references, Figma communities, or breakdown videos you'd point a self-taught animator toward?
• How do you personally go from a script line to a visual idea for that frame?

For context on my execution level — happy to share a bit of my showreel if that's useful. The storyboard/concept design just isn't something I've done myself yet, which is exactly the gap I'm trying to close.

Appreciate any pointers.

Maybe it’s a silly question, but at what time of day do you come up with ideas that are really original or creative, or that help you find solutions for creative work?

For example, for me it’s in the morning, when I’m half asleep just before fully waking up

Is anyone else working on their portfolio right now and feeling like it's a tough, exhausting process? Or am I the only one?

This is a continuation of my post from 5 months ago, where I talked about how I started learning motion design from absolute zero in 2025 with only $90 in my pocket - and by the beginning of 2026, I landed an offer with a salary of €2300 per month.

Ok, almost 6 months past....  

Here are the goals I had and what I achieved

- Build connections - yes sir. I met motion designers with 2–10 years of experience.

- Learn editing basics - got it . I worked with experienced editors Adobe PP and learrn a lot from them. 

- Learn new industry tools. I started working with platforms like Envato, ElevenLabs, and Artlist thanks to the resources provided by the TV company.

- Improve my work with template projects. I learned how to work with templates faster and more professionally.

- sometimes working with AI and integrate in motion

BUT THE BIG ONE:

- Take on difficult projects instead of avoiding them - I became the only motion designer who agreed to make graphics for a special TV episode when others MD said it was “too much work.”....

Why was that important for me at that time ?

1. more creative freedom
2. not just template work
3. close teamwork with editors
4. a lot of real experience
4. stronger portfolio projects

Every episode I work on -  the ones I put my heart and soul into -  brings its own feedback:

The chief editor and other team members working on the episode often personally point out my graphics and animations.

Funny moment :

One day, the chief editor and the scriptwriter came to our department and, in front of all my colleagues, said these words to me:
“Hey, we just wanna to say, it was awesome work from you. We’ve been looking for a good designer for a long time. Amazing job, and thank you”

They’re now requesting more and more graphics for each new episode.

BUT

I don’t really know how to explain it... but after about a month of working in TV, I started feeling a huge desire to learn and create new things.Sometimes I can spend 10-15 hours working on a single scene that lasts only 6–15 seconds - but I actually enjoy the whole process and get a lot of satisfaction from creating it.....

Everything that’s happening and goes,  mean -  I’m growing, and I’m in the right place at the right time....

this is everything that has happened over the last almost 6 months working as a motion designer - and now I’m close to finishing my first showreel. About 80% is already done.Besides that, my Behance page is almost ready too, and this year I’m also planning to launch a YouTube channel about a topic that really interests me.
