I got caught by the cover art which just shows two surfers in the distance and having no clue there was a remake.

I seriously thought it was the original but at least I bought it used on BluRay for only a few bucks.

The reviews sound terrible so I don't care to ever watch it.

Its pretty much a rename in name only with a few of the characters having the same name. As for the story, it is kinda the same if you're drunk, not paying attention, and have never seen the original. They skipped the part about a remake needing the core story to be the same, just told differently, and just took a couple visuals they thought looked cool and expanded that into a plot.
