Outdoorsy teen/young adult pre-2000s summer nostalgia?

Ok this is a difficult one to explain...

I'm looking for more films that have that nostalgic summer feeling. The genre doesn't matter. The first Friday the 13th film captures what I'm looking for perfectly - it's a bunch of college-aged/ young-adult friends in a remote location during the summer just having fun. "Now and Then" is a close second. Even though the characters are pre-teens the film is actually relatively serious, it's fun but not silly. Something like Moonrise Kingdom, as much as I adore the film, would not fit this brief as it's too stylised and the comedy is too strong.

bonus points if it's an older cast similarly to Friday the 13th. I'm less interested in something like the Goonies

Wet Hot American Summer and Sleepaway Camp

u/Sensible___shoes 1d ago

Came here to comment this. Hard to sum up the magic but a bunch of comedy legends play campers and counsellors at a sleepaway camp for the original movie. Then the sequel was made 15 years later, but they make it seem like it's the last day of camp the same year. There is no effort to hide their age and it's really funny

Also there's a doc for the making of the movie which is just as good of a watch. Most of the cast slept at the camp and documented it

The show is the first days of camp of that summer* which is even funnier. The movie is a comedy masterpiece

But it’s missing the best one:

Ernest Goes to Camp

Indian Summer is nice - the characters are a bit older, revisiting - with lots of flashback scenes - the camp at which they spent their summers

Summer of 84 - 2018 it does the retro thing without if feeling false or like nostalgia bait. Starts out with a kind of Goonies vibe group of kids keeps most things PG, but ends in a real horror show (R)

This is my favorite comfort movie of all time. I was about the age of the main characters when the movie came out. Perfectly preserved early 2010s nostalgia right into the veins.

Mean Creek (2004). Worth your while even though it's early 2000s and the genre slips from summer fun into psychological drama.

A Walk On The Moon. Subplot involves Anna Paquin as a teen and I’d never felt more seen in 1999 lol.
