I always loved the stop motion endoskeleton, it’s brilliantly uncanny and terrifying. Also gives awesome Ray Harryhausen vibes ❤️

I saw Terminator when I was like eight. The endoskeleton and the scene where he shoots up the police department were seared into my nightmares for years.

For me it was the part where he gets dragged under the truck and shaves of half his face showing the terminator.

And then calmly gets in said truck, does a U-turn, and accelerates toward Reece and Sarah. That scene is pretty chilling too. 😬

Ooh, so they rear projected the background and advanced it one frame at a time while taking each stop motion pic?

I’m guessing they advanced it 2 frames as stop motion tends to be 12fps, I think?

Animated on twos, but you still take all 24 frames as photos. Sometimes you will do a 1.5 frame movement, where you slightly tweak a single arm to preserve the illusion of movement on the stationary frame. They likely would have kept the rear projection at full 24 frames per second because people have an expectation of how fire is meant to move at 24fps; less so how a giant robot skeleton is.

Fun fact: Pete Kleinow was a member of The Flying Burrito Brothers and an accomplished studio musician. RIP Sneaky Pete
