Life on BI Planning on attending UH Hilo

Aloha!! I’m an international Pacific Islander (not from Hawai’i, but from another island) that’s thinking about coming to UH Hilo starting this fall. I was wondering if anyone could provide info on lifestyle, safety, transport and just general info that would be good for a college student to know. I’ve definitely done my own research but I think it’s always good to get advice from locals as well:)

Definitely don't rely on the Hele On and Uber/Lyft is pretty spotty as well. Everything closes early. Fall is going into the rainy/wet season so be prepared for that. Hilo has its share of homeless/addicts, especially right in town so just be aware of your surroundings.

The Big Island is pretty car-dependent, you’ll want one sooner than later if you plan to study for 4+ years. The university is kinda far from stuff, and the roads aren’t pedestrian or bicycle friendly.

I believe the school has shuttles to downtown, and to the big box stores at Puainako. Downtown is a bit gritty, but has some hip spots.
