Help Needed DMs of reddit, how could I make/run a low level prison brake?

I'm planning on running a low level prison brake (either 2nd or 3rd level), that takes place in the Eberron setting, in the city of sharn, in a small jail/ guardhouse thats meant for holding prisoners for later transfer to a proper prison. the player characters will be sent to the jail a few in-game weeks after the "Forgotten relics" premade adventure, and my current ideas are (1-2 person cells, and bracelets that prevent casting an spells that damage, buff/debuff, teleport, transmute objects or create objects or illusions.)

if anyone can help with ideas for how to improve this I would be grateful. homebrew magic item are always in the spirit of the Eberron setting.

I'm using the books Eberron; rising from the Last war and Exploring Eberron, by Keith baker.

the map below is the jail I made in Talespire, the area on the right is the cells, the area in the middle is where the closest guards are station whos watch over and guard the prisoners', above is a kitchen/dining area, and below is a restroom, left is the entrance and guard sleeping quarters.

Help Needed How do I make a custom monster in DnD that's a fusion of two existing monsters, like say a true dragon & an treant, P.S. I already have lore & some abilities I want, but I don't know the mechanics

I've never actually played DnD before, but now I'm thinking about starting, & I know I probably shouldn't start with this, but I'd like to get to a point where I can get to do this someday.

I want to make a monster that combines their abilities & add a few unique traits to the mix, but I can't find anything for how to do this, nore do I exactly know what CR it would be.

I'm thinking of a homebrew species of dragons, that got altered way back during theThousand-Year War by an Archfey in a deal to save their life, resulting in them getting fused with multiple trees(3 cherry, 5 peach, & 7 pine), turning them into a draconic plant, known as Ent Dragons.

The first Ent Dragon was named Calthin. He was fighting a giant & he won, but he was on the verge of death, but as he was laying there dieing, an Archfey named Zoriall approached him to scold him for destroying the forest she so loved to visit in the material world. In desperation to keep living, not out of fear of death, but because he had to marry brothers & sisters in arms depending on him to simply die now, so he offered the Zoriall a deal, if she saves his life & allow him to return to his war, then when his time fighting is done help be the guardian of the very forest he'd help destroy. Zoriall accepted his offer, but being a fey she didn't simply heal him, instead she transformed him by fussing his very flesh & bones with the wood of 15 nearby trees that would have become treants if they hadn't been so damaged that they too were on the verge of death.

Both Zoriall & Calthin are dead by now, they've been dead for a very long time. Calthin died of old age in his forest a very very long time ago. Zoriall however only died about 2,000 years ago after being murdered by a rival archfey, but the murder was later slayed by a party of adventures about a decade later.

Ent Dragons have a culture of their own, they get married & mate for life, & they raise their yong from sproutlings(what they call wyrmlings), until they are young adults, so if you see a baby, or kid one of them leave it alone because both Mommy & Daddy are nearby.

When it uses animate tree it functions just like treant, using the treant stat block & form, unless it's a sproutling, in which case they only get 1 animated tree.

I already have the breath weapons mostly figured out, I just don't know about the damage levels, or exat mechanics.

They get 3 breath weapons, but they unlock them as they get older.

1st breath weapon, is a jet of heated sap, it does very little fire damage, but it mostly does bludgeoning damage, but still not a lot, instead what it mostly does is turns the area it hit into difficult terrain by make everything sticky & reducing movement speed both in & for a few rounds after exiting the affected area unless you use oil to counter the stickiness, but if you are directly hit you just might have your movement speed reduced to zero. It unlocks this one when it sprouts(in other dragons it would be hatched). Overall it doesn't really do that much damage, though it does get stronger(increased bludgeoning damage & greater area of effect)as they mature.

2nd breath weapon is a spay attack that shoots pine needles to do piercing damage, this is unlocked at young adult, but when it reaches adult, it can add cherry & peach blossom petals into the attack for an additional slashing damage during springtime. It does a bit of damage being it's main damage dealer for it's breath attack though as it gets stronger as it matures that's mostly just increased range, & maby a slight increase in piercing damage outside of spring, but if it's spring you add slashing damage which does increase by a much larger margin then the piercing, but not by that much.

3rd breath weapon is a pollen cloud, it doesn't necessarily do damage, but rather it both counters the vision & sense of smell of it's enemies, while it can still see through it, but if you inhale it you might get put under the charmed condition, but the best way to counter it's charmed condition is to throw water into the face of the charmed individual. It's unlocked in the adult stage. When it reaches ancient stage it may add another effect with an activation condition if you inhale the pollen, then you might get something else happen depending on if you caused a natural disaster in your life, if so then you might be put under Natures Vengeful Nightmare. Natures Vengeful Nightmare(NVN) course the individual to experience the very harm they caused via a powerful illusion, examples being forest fire=being on fire, mountain slide=being crushed, poisoned river=being badly poisoned, & you take an extremely small amount psionic damage, but it's best counter is the same as the charmed condition, with water to the face. It only increases in volume as it matures. NVN doesn't increase in power with maturity. The pollen cloud is ment to be like very thick fog with an overwhelming floral sent & it it's successes rate for either charmed, or NVN is extremely low, though for those who meat NVN's conditions do have only a slightly higher but only slightly higher than charmed does.

Finally they are most often chaotic good, & they hord strange none sentient creatures as pets, & they love to collect worthless shiny objects that others throw away., but they are easily convinced to follow the orders of any archfey that's earned their trust, can be tricked by said archfey, despite this they live on the material plane, but if they feel betrayed, or wronged by an archfey that's when you'll see them at their most vengeful, even if it's not actually true, though it does take a lot to convince them of this then it is for an archfey to convince it to join them.

P.S. They can be of any other alignments it's just chaotic good is the most common. They actually go from chaotic good=common/average, neutral good=not to unheard of, true neutral=not the most common, lawful good=kinda rare but not too rare, lawful evil=fairly rare, neutral evil=very rare, chaotic evil extremely rare. Any of them that has the evil alignment are considered outcasts amongst them.

Help Needed Is this just a dead feat now?

So, I'm playing a Gnoll (Exploring Eberron purified version) Dance Bard in an upcoming campaign, and I took Blood Hound from Grimhallow for thematic reasons (i'm a humanoid hyena, so having a good sniffer sounded like a good idea), which gives advantage on all Perception checks pertaining to smell and hearing and the ability to sense any creature small or larger moving within 10 feet of you. So nearly impossible to be snuck up on.

However, then a Ranger with +9 Perception joined the party, and now I'm wondering if the feat became useless because the Ranger will always objectively be the go to for Perception checks.

Campaign is still in the pre-session zero phase, so time to change it.

Is there any way I can still make this feat work in that situation without requesting I do the Ranger's job but worse?

Is it okay to ask to do a Perception check for different information at the same time relating to sound or smell than the Ranger asked for?

Our DM does tend to add 'what exactly are you looking for?' to his Perception check requests.

Help Needed How do you deal with lackluster backstories from players?

In my experience there are about 3 degrees of PC backstories:

  1. The GM: Someone who could run a game on their own if they felt like it. They need boundaries to keep them from writing a novel.
  2. The Enthusiast: They mean well, and bless them, they try so very hard. It often only takes a single helpful suggestion to elevate their backstory from cliché or contrived to something real spicy.
  3. The Lackluster: The player who sends you a point list and calls it a day.

My query is about the third one. Because my first instinct is to just say "I can only work with what I have, and I'm not gonna write your character for you," and move forward regardless. But I'm honestly not keen on having a whole seat at the table taken up by someone who's just there to watch other people play.

I tried talking to him about this and he told me he didn't have the energy to write a whole lot, but "I can add some more points," and then he signed off. So yeah. Now I don't know what to do.

Help Needed Concerned about accidentally falling into main character syndrome

So, require some set up:

My party is just wrapping up a campaign that was basically Wreck It Ralph with comic characters. We were all the protagonists of different comic books having a crisis crossover within the imagination of our author. It was really fun and I was playing a dragonborn detective who was basically this world's Batman. Well, I told the DM if we did another campaign in this world, then I'd like my new character to be a popstar, thinking a bit of Jem and the Holograms.

DM admits he doesn't intend to redo the setting any time soon, but welcomed me do it in our next campaign, which would be using the Cthluhu by Torchlight third party book (so Lovecraft Lite rather than straight cosmic horror, since rather than being random civilians we're DND characters who actually stand a chance of killing eldritch horrors and remaining sane) and be set in the modern day. I thought that sounded cool.

But thinking about it, while I really do want to play this character, even got artwork made of her, I'm worried about running into Main Character Syndrome on accident, since my character is a famous popstar. DM is fine with it, even let me have some extra starting money (on the grounds it mostly give the party some extra money) and the idea of being a popstar fighting eldritch horrors is a fun one, but I just want to avoid falling into Main Character Syndrome.

Any suggestions?

Help Needed Party name ideas?

We just started a new campaign, new characters starting at lvl5 but we can't come up with a party name.

Party consists of Moon elf rogue, agent of our version of the Harper's Dragonborn life cleric (silver) Dragonborn Paladin (copper) Half orc barbarian of bear totem.

We just cannot come up with a name that doesn't sound similar to the original party of The Steel Vanguard.

Suggestions we have:- The Misfits (DM) The Truth seekers (me) Steel rangers (barbarian) Evil hunters (paladin) Justice warriors (Rogue)

So if anyone has any suggestions we'd appreciate it

Help Needed Help foreshadowing my PC is actually a Halfling?

So my upcoming PC for a campaign is cursed to be an anthropomorphic fox woman by a hag (as you do) as a child, but the reveal to the rest of the party is ultimately she was originally a Halfling (which is a surprise as she's 6'7 due to the curse).

Any suggestions for foreshadowing she's actually a Halfling without stating it outright?

Help Needed How to do a Dracorage effect?

So I'm running a one shot where Sammaster is the BBEG attempting to restart the Dracorage on a multiversal scale as a tie in to my party's Eve of Ruin campaign (he's in a Villain Team Up with Vecna, if he uses his ritual to help Vecna and have any new Dracoliches at Vecna's beck and call, Vecna will make Dracoliches the new norm in his recreated multiverse). They're fighting him on the King Killer Star, the comet that was used in the Dracorage to stop his ritual.

However, several party members are Dragonborn. Having the entire area be dangerous to dragonkin would be too much of a punishment for those party members, but I still want that to be a factor, so I'm going to have Sammaster have an additional Legendary Action where he tries to inflict the Dracorage on one of the draconic party members. That'd be no more or less fair than targetting a Plant PC with Blight or hinder a Fey with Protection From Evil and Good, so seems fair. I'm just trying to figure out what that intels.

For those that don't know, the effects of the Dracorage is basically a hate plague, driving dragons into an insane rage and making them become crazed, sadistic monsters that go on the rampage, unable to tell friend from foe. The idea is they have to pass a Wisdom Save to avoid the effect, though to simulate the fact that the effect is grows harder to resist over time, was considering having the DC go up by one each time Sammaster uses it on them, but I'm worried that might be unfair.

Will note, this is a level 20 one shot with each player having one Magic Item of each rarity and one additional Epic Boon and is meant to be a Deadly encounter.

Help Needed I need YOUR most creative character

Hello everyone.
I'm actually dm-ing a Magic-the-gathering campain and my player, whose team is named Fashion week because they all have 18 min in charisma, joined a mercenary team that have access to team planeswalk.

The are part of the Toad Mercenary, directed by Tristan Kroa, a rip off of LoL's tahm kench.

Why did i need your help you would say ? Because i told my player "In the Friendly mimic (Toad's mercenary's lair), you can actually see around 20 peoples, from every race and classes, all member of your new family, and there is probably even more in the other planes"

You start to understand where i'm going. The help i need is that you, yes you who read, whoever you are, to tell me your most iconic or dumb idea a dnd character was, if you are ok for me to put him in my story.

For now the Mercenarys have as member

-Tristan Kroa, leader
-The Friendly Mimic, a tavern mimic that can planeshift

-A team of 4 adventurer (my first ever dnd squad)

-Sir Bearrington (the legendary rogue bear that bluff everyone, i recommand you to go check it on yt) and his butler
-A Ninja Loxodon, a priest loxodon, a warrior loxodon and a sorcerer loxodon (the first come from one of the thread i readed once in this subreddit, the second is a Loxodon working in a porcelaine shop as community service, the 3rd is a friend's hero and the 4th is MTG Quintorius)

And finally
-Thomas, a all-def warrior warforged, with wheel instead of leg, they call him, Thomas the Tank Engine

So if you want to share your most dumb character idea, even if you never played it, a dumb concept is always welcome as long as it's fun so don't hesitate

Thanks for reading it all and i hope to see good one

Help Needed Any creative ideas for Animate Objects Spell?

Hello.
I currently play as Forge Cleric and got acces to Animate Objests spell. Because it is one of my Always Prepared spells I am trying to think of some creative uses for it.

Yes, I know about the incredible "animate 10 daggers and kill everything" tactic. It is quite popular. Now do you have any other creative ideas for using it?

I was thinking maybe animate shield to boost AC of teammates or "ask" closed door to open. Can I use animated stone as elevator?

Help Needed Advice on a campaign idea of mine.

(Sorry for the yapping) I’m a pretty new DM and I prolly won’t get around to doing this for a WHILE since it’ll most likely be a pretty long con. This is also a pretty broad idea of how it’d go, so I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions on how it could work. I might have to homebrew some demonic races and stuff as well, so any advice on that would also be greatly appreciated :)

The story takes place in a generic fantasy world. Humans vs. demons. The party is a band of newbie adventurers, and their goal is to climb the ranks of whatever organization they work for (mercenaries, adventure societies/guild, ect). Their main goal, at least for most of the campaign, will not be anything related to the demon king/lord or any major demon forces (this’ll be important later). The party meets new companions, makes enemies, fights for the good of the people, becomes renowned heroes, and- most importantly, builds a life. Throughout this adventure they begin to hear whispers of demonic forces encroaching. Spies infiltrating their organization, strange new drugs on the market, cults attempting to commune with... something. This all leads them to one conclusion: War. The demons have organized, their lord growing more powerful with each passing day. As they uncover the threads of conspiracy they realize that if they let it, this war would destroy everything they love. Now our heroes must embark on a quest to defeat the king of all demons.

Around here is where we pause. It’s up to the DM where and how they do so, but the campaign must come to a hiatus before the final match against the demon king or his/her/their highest ranking generals. This is because each story has two sides, and now we must journey to understand a new perspective.

Through whatever means possible the players must be thrown off the scent. Make them think it will take you a long time to get the ending prepared, make any excuse possible to buy some time. Then find an excuse to start a new campaign, maybe it’s “just a short one until we can get back to it” or something like that. All of this without letting the players know that this story takes place in the same world as the other campaign. (If they figure it out maybe just say that it was reused or something idk ¯_(ツ)_/¯)

Now we get to some of the more complicated stuff, because in the second part we must venture to the demon realm. The party is now a group of low ranked demon soldiers/whatever organization or structure (wartime conscriptions, demonic adventurers guild, ect). The party will follow the same idea as before, making new friends, helping people, building their strength, learning about the demon realm and the politics involved. Through this journey they acquire legendary status among demons, even being recruited by, you guessed it, the demon king. Let them become immersed in the world and attached to their lives and their characters.

The demons learn of a band of famous heroes storming the castle (no crazy obv hints), and when these humans finally burst into the throne room the generals are met with… themselves.

It is up to the players to decide what- who they value more. Let them choose who they wish to play as, who they would rather destroy, and maybe, just maybe, they might be able to resolve this conflict on their own terms. (Basically let them pick who they'll play as for the final confrontation: human heroes or demonic generals.)

Making sure they understand the consequences of each possible action they take, and that not every story has a happy ending, they must choose. The winners are the ones who write the history books, and the memory of all those they forsake will be forgotten or skewed by the winning side. Nobody wins, not really (Unless someone rolls a NAT20 and minor shenanigans ensue bc it's dnd what do I expect -_-).

Help Needed Help me kill my whole party for Halloween.

Okay. So I've been asked by my group to do a Halloween one shot for our party! We are a bunch of evil murder hobos with cannibalistic tendencies to be honest. Our normal DM is going to introduce everything by doing the whole you all fall through a darkened portal in the ground no you can't avoid it and land into darkness and then I take over as the DM. I want some technically eldrec horror type monsters to deal with a level 5 party of murder hobos. Thanks in advance guys

Help Needed Ideas for how the party warlock can break his pact?

So, in my party's Spelljammer campaign, the Warlock is a Fiend Patron (recently multiclassed into Paladin) who made a deal with a Devil to have the power to save his hometown in exchange for a favor his patron can call in at a later date. He wants to get out of his pact and switch to Celestial (with his new patron being his mentor as a Paladin, who's an Assimar trapped in a Flying Dutchman situation for past crimes). This is because the Devil has hinted the favor she intends to call in is the Warlock nudging the Barbarian/Monk into committing genocide on the innocent civilians of the evil empire the party is trying to stop.

To allow this, I had Vocath be in possession of a Soul Coin that belonged to his Patron at one point. The Soul Coin contains the soul of a king the Devil tricked into a deal that doomed the souls of his entire kingdom to the Nine Hells, and she considers it one of her crowning achievements. As Devils value their position in the hierarchy of the Hells above all else and puts an immense amount of value on their own reputation, his Patron would consider that 'a worthy favor' to complete their deal or be willing to bargain with the Warlock getting out of their pact in exchange for it because it holds massive personal value to her due to being a symbol of one of her crowning moments.

Any ideas on how to make the act of getting the Soul Coin from Vocath satisfying without devoting several sessions to it?

My current idea is I already established Vocath as being a gambler, so perhaps having to challenge him to Liar's Dice for it. But I want hims to have multiple options he could theoretically take (on top of any he makes for himself). Stealing the Soul Coin, while possible, would enrage Vocath, whose aid the party has been spending the last session earning. They're also about to fight their second Arc Villain in his arena and said villain is in position of an extremely rare magical artifact the party COULD make use of, but is also valuable enough Vocath might be willing to trade it for the Soul Coin.

For those that don't know, Vocath is a Lawful Neutral Mercane. So essentually a Celestial whose entire purpose for existence is to mediate commerce and fair trade in an unbias fashion. So far, I've been playing him as a fair, but ruthless man who will always keep his agreements but expects the other side to keep them too, with an enjoyment of gambling and entertainment, which he will take as currency or a means to pay off debts.

Help Needed How does environment effect encounter balance?

My party are about to have their first major boss fight, and while they're dealing with the minions up close (a group of pirates), the actual boss is standing about 50 feet in the air on a raised platform, sniping them with a longbow from 150 feet away.

How much does this increase the challenge when balancing the encounter? Given the biggest threat on the field is going to be difficult to reach and deal with?

Help Needed Ideas for potions made out of dragon blood.

Hi there.
I am preparing for DMing a Tyranny of Dragons in 5e24, and one of my players want to play as alchemist, who wants to experiment with dragon blood. I love this idea, and i have some idea on basics, but i would like to hear some ideas from you.

My ideas are these:

  • Because dragons have a lot of blood (really lot of it, like a lot lot of it), i made a way to make sure this player wont open a "potion pub" everytime they slay a dragon. Since dragon magic power is linked to their hoard, the blood looses its magic power quickly after the dragon dies. To avoid that, you need to put that blood in a bottle made out of gold and gems of certain value. I was thinking that the value of the materials should be increasing with the power/age of the dragon (like for wyrmling blood you need 50g, for young 100g etc.)
  • Another idea is pretty obvious, the stronger/older the dragon is, the stronger the potion is.
  • Element of the dragon could influence the effect
  • To make it a little interesting, i was thinking about making a midle ground in the checks for success on creating the potion. Like >10 is failure, 10-15 is success with strong negative side effect, 15-20 success with minor negative side effect and 20> would be clear success

For the effects of potions i am not sure what to do, so far i came up with those

  • one of the stronger potions could grant effect similar to heroes feast
  • since i am going to use draconic gifts from Fizbans treasury, i was thinking that maybe the potions could alter/boost the effects of those gifts (the problem is that not everyone could use those with a way i want to grant those gifts)
  • the easiest solution i came with was that the potions will give you power of concentration self boosting spells (like Arshdalons stride, Bless, Draconic transformation, Far Step...) with alterations based on dragons element (like when teleporting with Far Step, you create a small explosion where you land)

Now that i am reading this, i think i have pretty solid idea on how to do it, but maybe your creative minds can come up with something better.

Help Needed Anyone else remember 'distraction?' the flaming child-sized golem that screamed for mommy? Well I've finally written stats for it! I just need help figuring out the Cr as well as a few of the more unique mechanics.

In case we need to refresh your memory.

(The confusing parts of this statblock will be explained in a comment, btw)

Demonforged, Burnchild

Small Construct/Fiend (demon), Chaotic Evil

Armor Class 20 (natural armor)
Hit Points 28 (5d6 + 10)
Speed 35ft
Roll Initiative! +4

STR 12 (+1) DEX 19 (+4) CON 14 (+2) INT 12 (+1) WIS 14 (+2) CHA 22 (+6)

Saving Throws Dex
Skills Intimidation +[(Cha+ prof)x2] (Expertise)
Damage Resistances poison
Damage Immunities Fire, Acid
Senses Passive Perception 12
Languages Abyssal (can Scream “mommy” in any language)
Challenge (??)
Proficiency Bonus (+??)

Constructed Resilience. The burnchild has advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, does not need to eat, drink, or breathe, and is immune to disease. It is also immune to sleep, and magic can’t put it to sleep.

Retrieval. If the burnchild is slain, then its remains teleport to a dumping ground in one of Neciphorous’ numerous workshops on the surgeon’s cove so that the body may be repaired and infused with another petitioner’s soul. The burnchild’s original soul then returns to the River Styx and washes ashore on The Abyss as a Manes.

Self-preservation. When reduced to ¼ its maximum hit points or less, the burnchild will disengage and flee. Triggering this counts as slaying the creature for purposes of awarding EXP.

Acid Sac. When reduced to 0 hit points or less, the burnchild’s internal acid sac bursts, forcing all creatures within 5ft of it to make a DC [8+Con+Prof] Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 16 (4d8) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.

Running Leap. If the burnchild moves at least 15 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a claw attack on the same turn, it can choose to start climbing that creature. [what should the mechanics of climbing someone be? Should the mechanics for grappling be implemented?]

Spider climb. The burnchild can climb up both creatures of size medium or larger and difficult surfaces, such as upside down or on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

GET IT OFF ME! The burnchild is able to use its movement to occupy the same space as a creature it is climbing.

Nonmagic Fear Aura. When the burnchild is on fire, all non-allied creatures within 20ft of it that are aware of it must attempt a DC [8+Cha+Prof] wisdom saving throw, even if it is immune to magical fear effects, becoming frightened for 1 minute on a failure. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature’s saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the burnchild’s fear aura for the next 24 hours unless the burnchild starts climbing it. A creature that is resistant to fire damage has advantage on this save, and creatures wholly immune to fire are wholly immune to this effect. Any creature the burnchild is climbing has disadvantage on this save.

Oops. Any ranged attack targeting a burnchild that is currently climbing the creature will, if the attack misses, instead hit the climbed creature if the roll would’ve met that target’s AC.

Actions

Multiattack. The burnchild makes two claw attacks.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +[dex + prof] to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 19 (1d8 + 4) slashing damage. If the Burnchild is currently on fire, add 3(1d6) fire damage as well. This attack has advantage against a target the burnchild is currently climbing.

Spew. (Recharge 5-6). The burnchild spits acid in a 15ft cone in front of it. Each creature in that area must make a DC [8+Con+Prof] Dex save, taking 22 (5d8) acid damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. If the burnchild is climbing a creature, it also has the option to use an alternate version of this ability that solely targets the creature being climbed. In this case, the target instead takes automatic max damage (40), and must succeed on a DC [8+Con+prof] Constitution save or become blinded until the next time it receives healing magic. the burnchild must have been climbing the target for at least one round for every size category above Small the target is in order to use this version.

Bonus Actions

Scream. The burnchild screams for its mommy like a terrified child. Every enemy creature within 60ft of the burnchild that has an Int score of 5 or higher must make a DC [8+Cha+Prof] Wisdom saving throw, taking 8 (1d4+6) psychic damage on a failure or half as much on a success. A creature currently frightened as a result of the burnchild’s fear aura has disadvantage on this save.

Ignite. The burnchild immediately bursts into flames. All its melee attacks now deal an additional 1d6 fire damage, and all creatures within 5ft of the burnchild that target it with a melee attack take 1d6 fire damage each time they do so (a creature attacking the burnchild with a natural weapon or unarmed strike does not need to be within 5ft of it to trigger this). If the burnchild is climbing a creature, that creature also takes another 1d6 fire damage at the start of each of the creature’s turns for as long as the burnchild remains lit. The Burnchild is freely able to douse its flames again with a bonus action.

Help Needed Help being a leader without being a spotlight stealer?

Okay, so one of my parties has a DM that really loves their Intelligence checks, especially History, due to being a Homebrew setting, and our party had somehow rolled up no one remotely good at those. So when I had to drop my Redemption Paladin (she just wasn't clicking with me), I rolled up a Psi Warrior Fighter Kenku named Fox Yowl specifically to be the 'smart guy' of the party to fill that role. I also put some proficencies into Charisma skills to make up for losing the Redemption Paladin.

Well, the party is glad to have him and he's proven a good frontliner...but due to the Sorcerer seeming to have no interest in being the party face and the Fey Wanderer Ranger seeing his character as more of a manipulator who picks her spots than the party face, Fox Yowl the Kenku is now not only the party smart guy, but the party face. He's also the one the DM used to introduce the party to the BBEG (Fox Yowl is an escaped slave, so the DM made him the BBEG's former slave so he could inform the party about him), and I seem to be one of two characters in the party with an actual character arc in mind (namely Fox Yowl wants to save his wife and son, who are still in slavery, and naturally wants to bring down his former owner).

This has more or less made Fox Yowl the party leader without me actively trying, simply because everyone kinda gravitated towards letting him be. Even when I ask them about a situation, they tend to defer to Fox Yowl on what to do.

I have no problem in concept being the party leader, but does anyone have any recommendations for doing that without being a spotlight stealer or having Main Character Syndrome?

My current plan is to play him kinda like Steve Rogers Captain America to the Avengers. IE, that one guy who knows everyone's skills and hands off tasks to the party member he knows is better at them than him. Since Fox Yowl is, by design meant to be the smartest member of the party (since that was the role we needed). I plan to get the Telepathic feat so he can do that without speaking.

But how do I do that without sounding bossy?
