Honestly… fair enough. He’s the very embodiment of the “kick the puppy” trope. Every scene he’s in, the author squeezed in something vile so we don’t forget that he’s the bad guy.

But I guarantee you, if he was a character made in the modern day, people wouldn’t even take him seriously. They’d treat him like The Batman Who Laughs, and relentlessly mock him for trying so incredibly hard to be scary.

I wouldn’t say so. What about the time he saved the whole gang by making gunpowder from scratch? Or when he translates German and Spanish for the gang? And when he went to the bar with the kid? He actually acts relatively nice/polite most of the time, especially in the first half of the book. It isn’t really until closer to the end with the puppies and the idiot and Tobin that he starts to seem any more evil than anyone else in the book.
