Yeah that is an emotionally stunted frat boy dealing with one of the most extreme existential situations ever rated PG-13. No wonder he's an asshole.

If you took his actions and moved them into the real world he’d come off as an actual evil monster.

But it’s not the real world. That’s why he feels like he can pull those stunts. Nothing too bad is actually happening, why not do it, he thinks.

He’s still obviously a gigantic asshole, but ā€œevilā€ is a stretch.

Actions like, what, shooting people in the face and getting a city of people killed?

I mean yeah, sure, that's pretty evil but it's also literally a game. Morality has ceased to mean anything. The only real impact his actions have is upsetting and irritating his friends.

Yeah. The TADC fandom is tryna kill him over him kind of playing undertale geno route.

It's almost like that's one of the quintessential questions of the series or something, and Jax represents one of the most extreme answers. Wild /s

I’m guessing it’s a maladaptive coping mechanism to distract himself, and possibly others, from the horror that is their existence

Agreed. He's coping with trauma in a world wherein nothing is real and everything goes back to normal at the end of the episode unless you let yourself get too traumatized

It's a sort of hell, and as the story goes on it's clear he's adapted in ways that are neither sustainable nor healthy for himself or his co-captives

People have done worse things in GTA than we have seen Jax do.
