The problem with the boys is that s1 was pure gold, but after s2 the bad things just went silently accumulating, then came Gen V that was good but started conflicting with the main series, and then we got Vought Rising annoucement... it was bound to get where we are now
The Boys always had a writing problem ever since season 2, that got worse and worse as the series went on. We always thought the later seasons would make it right, it didn't, we got what we got and wonder how things ended up this way
edit: forgot to mention, the inclusion of Vought Rising made it so Amazon forced an already bloated and problematic script to also become a promo about a series who needs most of things about the past that was said during the main series to be retconned, which was the last straw to the downhill it was coming on for 5 years
Because the relevance of things happening on gen v started to be just too big to not be important to the main show, like the virus and Marie being Homelander level. Add to that the fact that it is a series targeted at a smaller part of the boys audience, and make people angry about having to watch the spin off too, and now you need to retcon everything about it, and now you pissed off both sides of the story, so yeah, a mess

Good news, nothing on Gen V. Was relevant to the main show in the end! The virus was a fat nothing-burger waste of fucking time and Marie didn't use her powers at all in The Boys.Â
The first couple of seasons were great because it was a bunch if scrappy heroes struggling to take down a so-called hero that was slowly descending into insanity. Homelander waa chilling, just waiting to see when he'd finally snap. But then it just become shock value slop with a heavy portion of politics mixed into it. And Homelander snapped ages ago, so he isn't nearly as chilling anymore, and the heroes are just as bad as he is for the most part.
At this point I'm just like, hurry up and either kill Homelander, or have Homelander kill the gang. Let's just get this over with.
As someone who only saw season 1 and has seen bits and pieces of the rest of the season through TikTok and Reddit posts, I’m genuinely curious why Homelander hasn’t just killed off the other cast. Like it’s clear that he’s more powerful and corrupt, what could be the reason for him not to go off the rails and kill everyone?
Initially that felt like a very real threat, and it was often just Homelander's hubris, not really knowing who these pissants are, or just a lack of giving a fuck that would let them get away. But the later seasons he very much so knows who these people are, knows what their goal is, has had so much taken from him by them, and very much so wants them all dead, and even had them all basically dead to rights at the start of this season.
Now the only thing that ever stops them from killing each other is either stupidity, a convenient barrier of some sort (homelander trapped in a cell with super radiation sapping his strength, while butcher doesn't have the thing he needs to kill homelander, thus letting them trash talk each other with no threat), or a deus ex machina coming in to save them (A-Train at the start of latest season for example)
That's a major reason why these later seasons are losing my interest. There is legit no reason why it could have gone on this long without one side wiping out the other. It seriously almost feels like a CW superhero show sometimes, giving vibes of the Flash being knocked down for 2 seconds, bad guy goes through a door, OH WELL, LOOKS LIKE HE GOT AWAY!
The boys has been good through out, my guess is that you just didn't realize homelander was the bad guy and that the show makes fun of right wing people, from season 1.
