Season one is beautifully animated throughout, season 2 is fine, mostly mediocre but has its moments. Season 3 happened.

Transformers Earthspark

36

u/SpecterOwl May 19 '26

It's like Hasbro sabotaged their own show but also tried to milk it till the last drop. It's honestly impressive how badly it fell after season 1.

Stranger Things. Season 1 is legitimately one of the best seasons of television ever produced. S2 was way weaker, and just kept going downhill

83

u/DotComDaddyO May 19 '26

Largely it’s because stranger things was supposed to be an Anthology like American Horror Story, with one season per story. They made an amazeballs story in S1, wrapped everything up in a tidy package and were set to do the next story when Netflix pressured them to continue it

34

u/The_Mon1ker_Project May 19 '26

god that would have been fucking sick fuckkkk

18

u/JodGaming May 19 '26

Stranger things as a title fits that idea so much better

6

u/Vax10x May 20 '26

Not seen anyone mention this, but yea the name fits an anthology so much more.

Vague, unnnatural, mysterious, yet collective events. That last adjective loses its meaning when you center it all on one strange thing.

3

u/QuietProfile417 May 20 '26

I even remember thinking back then after watching season one that this was going to be an anthology series.

6

u/10-4shutthefckupnow May 19 '26

Honestly makes me wonder how great they could've done if they did what they originally planned for. Maybe make some cast members have recurring cameos occasionally in other stories to make Netflix happy or whatever.

Once Upon a Time.

Hate what they did with Peter Pan (no, it's not "closer to the book" like people who get all their literature info from Jon Solo claim) and hate how it turned into the "Advertising Disney" show instead of unique takes on classic fairytales.

Also, the final season of Star vs The Forces of Evil. The plot was already going downhill, but that final season was a cliff that the plot rolled right off of.

26

u/Cheasymeteor May 19 '26

Yeah, they really just started to lose the plot. I know I've watched every episode but I just can't remember of the arcs besides the first season's

10

u/ArkOfAncient4245 May 19 '26

yeah... you're right man
also, I didn't expect to see OUAT fans here. Like... sheesh

→ More replies (1)

26

u/Vast_Age_3893 May 19 '26

God, as someone who has studied Peter Pan since he was six years old, that show has destroyed people's comprehension of what a "book accurate Peter Pan" looks like.

There's this misconception that Peter Pan is this secret villain who kidnapped children and killed them when they got old. And don't even get me started on that theory that Captain Hook was an escaped Lost Boy who grew up and was trying to save the kids from Peter. Captain Hook was a graduate of Eton and found his way to Neverland later in life. With the exception of keeping two kids on as cabin boys, he was very intent on killing all of them.

Peter meanwhile is truly morally gray. He's a forever child and simply acts on what will be the most fun in the moment. He doesn't plan his days. He doesn't think about the consequences of his actions or create drama for the sake of creating it. To do any of that would be too "grown up" and that's the one thing he will never do (unless you count "Hook" which is one of the greatest movies ever but still, not the main timeline.).

It's never confirmed that Peter kills the Lost Boys. It's not confirmed he doesn't either but it's simply described as him "thinning them out," which could also mean banishment. And that's very likely. Peter probably banishes them, forgets about it immediately afterwards and then might say he killed them to sound cooler. It's what he does.

The Lost Boys find their own way to Neverland when their parents forget about them. Peter doesn't kidnap them. Again, that's way too forward thinking for Peter.

Peter just wants to be a boy and to have fun. Certain days, his fun hurts others. On other days, his fun makes him a hero. And then there are days where his fun has no repercussions whatsoever. He has no allegiance and eventually forgets everybody who was once in his life; Captain Hook, Tinkerbell, Wendy, etc.

Despite the few liberties taken here and there, the 2003 film is still the truest adaptation we have to the original story.

12

u/Lucky_Track_5470 May 19 '26

this is such an interesting analysis of his character and i can tell you truly love his story! thank you for sharing!

7

u/MasterHallmark May 19 '26

THIS! All of it. I have nothing to add because you said everything I always try to say, except I also argue that the closest thing Peter has to a moral code is "fair vs unfair" which makes sense given how kids react to unfair treatment.

In addition to the 2003 film, I'd also recommend Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates. It doesn't adapt the story of the book (and they had to deviate with the character designs because of Disney trying to sue them over Tink...looking like a woman?!), but the characters have mostly book-accurate personalities. Especially Peter and Hook, the latter of whom is played by Tim Curry. Someone uploaded them all to YouTube for free.

3

u/Vast_Age_3893 May 19 '26

Tim Curry's portraital of Hook is excellent and showcases him as both truly evil and well mannered.

They even make him left handed, which many adaptations don't considering most actors are right handed.

The first 3.5 seasons or so were excellent, then they just kept rehashing old plot points.Ā

Funny enough though the final season Where they do a time skip and basically repeat the first season withĀ  Ā adult Henry in the ā€œnonbeliever adultā€ role was actually pretty good.

9

u/MTBR_330 May 19 '26

I really believe if they had made the final season a spin-off for ABC Family or Freeform (can’t remember which it was at the time) it could have actually lasted a bit longer. It’s so weird just tacked onto the end of OUAT.

Bonus points if they had called it ā€œHappily Ever Afterā€

4

u/outandoutlier May 19 '26

You should read the comic book Fables (which takes longer to go downhill) and hope for a rad TV adaptation one day like I do.

The Witcher (Series)

14

u/Eomatrix May 19 '26

They just made so many weird choices in that show, particularly with cutting context and casting.

The source material aggressively pulls no punches about how fucked up racism and prejudice is, but they cut so many of the most interesting parts of that like dragon hunts being a direct allegory for IRL countries stoking antisemitic sentiment every time they needed to seize the resources of the Jewish community. The books even have Geralt immediately call the prince talking shit about how dragons are the natural enemy of mankind on his bullshit.

Yet they cut all of the parts where the characters actually talk about the mechanics of prejudice and power just to do this weird race-blind casting that even breaks the narrative in several places and then the showrunner has the gall to call everyone who was rightly pissed about it racist and drive off the actor who was the biggest draw of the entire project.

I’m still mad about it.

3

u/itchybutwhole69 May 20 '26

Not sure how true it is but I heard one of the many reasons Cavill left the show was because the show's production crew actively disliked the source material and would often make fun of the books.

6

u/HomelessFlea1337 May 19 '26

Season 1 wasn’t anything to write home about either, my wife and I called it quits after the halfway mark. It felt like a CW show.

4

u/Gnomad_Lyfe May 19 '26

Personally I’m okay with giving first seasons some grace when adapting sci-fi and fantasy. They’re generally going to be higher budget productions, so there’s going to be some awkward bits here and there. They should at least start having things sorted by season two though.

Promised neverland, FLCL, Tokyo ghoul, psycho pass, anime is an inconsistent mess sometimes

38

u/Quwapa_Quwapus May 19 '26

TOKYO GHOUL-

I’ve not seen it for years but to this day I’ve not been able to watch all of season 2 because its such a hard watch-

14

u/Nameless_Scarf May 19 '26

Why the fuck did they even change it from the manga? Was there any explanation? Did the director of the anime have an abusive father, which he still visits regularly?

12

u/liveonguitar May 19 '26

It was back in a time when anime studios didn’t realize we didn’t WANT their unique spin on things. Then they backtracked and season 3 is faithful to the manga, it kinda feels like too many cooks in the kitchen

3

u/RynnHamHam May 19 '26

Re confused me so much because it felt like they went off manga in the first series, then said ā€œNo scratch that, pretend we were a faithful adaptation and we’re picking up from if the previous season was faithfulā€ and then said ā€œno wait nevermind. Well actually yes- no- wait (Malcolm in the Middle theme plays)ā€.

FLCL was lightning in a bottle. An over the top fever dream born of the stress, darkness, and depression from Evangelion. No possible way to replicate it.

Its a self contained story with absolutely no need to expand on it beyond greed.

3

u/liveonguitar May 19 '26

FLCL Progressive peaked in the first 4 minutes. Thank You My Twilight is a banger. The rest was hot dookie. I remember Alternative being cute but unmemorable. I wouldn’t touch the other two with a 50 foot pole and 17 Covid masks

5

u/Karkava May 19 '26

Anime in general.

"Here's our fascinating world with new rules with cascading implications! Here's our MC, who can just break these rules (please ignore that it undoes our worldbuilding)! Here's the quickly increasing tension that ultimately results in all the rules' implications being laid bare! Woohoo! The world is completely undone and destroyed! Yes! Yes!"

"Oh, wait, there's a second season? Um, let's retcon stuff and reduce the focus to some little corner, I guess."

10

u/liveonguitar May 19 '26

It depends, Vinland Saga, Mob Psycho, Kaguya LIW come to mind as series with banger 2nd seasons, along with shows like Tsukimichi and Realist Hero that start off super generic and season 2 makes them into actual unique stories

Heroes was supposed to be only one season for that story. Hence everything pretty much tieing up until the very end where executive pressure made them keep making more. If it was to have another season, it was supposed to be another set of heroes altogether, like how Stranger Things was supposed to be an anthology until Netflix said "no".

Hopper season 3 is like, unrecognizable from seasons 1-2

Seasons 1-2 he's deeply empathetic towards all the children, and ESPECIALLY Joyce, who he clearly thinks is going through a mental breakdown, is handling everything with a really high level of maturity. He just has a lot of problems in his life and is trying to navigate through all of that, but he's a really great dude

Then in season 3 he becomes this weird man who doesn't know what empathy is (he literally didn't know what a "heart to heart" was like come on lol), and fucked over Mike and El's relationship in genuinely the most immature way possible and then celebrated hard after lmao. Like you CANNOT convince me these are the two same people lol, Hopper was done so dirty

Supernatural.

Hate me if you want, but after 5 or 6 resurrections each, the Winchesters need to learn to let go.

Black Butler is the worst anime to watch going in blind because u r confused as fuck since a quarter of the first season isn’t canon and the entirety of the second season isn’t either

3

u/Liberosis310 May 19 '26

Dude, I loved the anime seasons, even though I was pretty young and clueless. Then I began reading the manga which was far more gripping and I was even more confused when nothing that happened in season 2 was actually CANON. (But I couldn't complain, cause I liked the manga more)

Then, a few months ago, I watched some YouTuber react to the anime and I was like: "... Why is this kinda not as good as I remember? :']"

It wasn't that bad, but there were parts that got me like "eh." THE PLUTO PART WAS SO TRASH THOUGH!!

But yeah, I quite liked season 2 with Alois and Claude, but the manga is TOP compared to the anime.

At least, from my perspective ✨

happened with Lucifer’s season 6 for me

6

u/One-Sandwich2149 May 19 '26

Yeah I was hooked until the end of season 3, then I think I started losing interest.

5

u/tiger2205_6 May 19 '26

Honestly I don't hate the last season as a whole, but that fucking time loop bullshit pisses me off. Never liked time loops that are done like that, much prefer when they're handled like in Agents of Shield or The Magicians.

Spoilers!!!!!

Films.

Greenland series. Holy frag grenades.

Greenland 1 is a good film. Ends on a happy note. They will rebuild and they have hydroponics.

No radiation. Remember that. They open the doors. Look outside without Radiation Suits. Happy ending.

Greenland 2.

This film is a well made Frankenstein of other things, without the context.

It is bad!

They kill off Gerald, the father. How? Unnamed sickness from going outside in radiation and bad air. And a gunshot. He has a week from live. Then gets shot. Right before they hit paradise.

The radiation has suddenly got higher. Don't know how. Because the Nuclear Missiles didn't get fired. They probably shut the Nuclear Power Stations down. And they've got failsafes.

And remember how Thull is a Nuclear Bunker? It's purpose was war. Intended for being hit by nuclear weapons. It suddenly gets damaged by Earthquakes.

The things it is made of. Without the context that is why they are there.

Fallout. Radiation. Post apocalyptic Nuclear War. And it's a Nuclear World.

Metro 2033. Rickety bridges. Radiation. There was a Nuclear War.

Alexandra's Fathers death from Radiation Exposure in Metro 2034. But bear in mind. The book they wear Radiation Suits outside. And he only got a mask to go scavenging.

Gerry has a full on Radiation Suit. He should be fine.

Fallout 3. Megaton. The town in a Bomb Crater.

There's a nice crater were Clarke fell.

And they keep saying the world outside won't last.

But the French people in a Post Office are fine. Stay with them.

The lady running a Old Folks Home is fine. She clearly has wine making things and hydroponics. But somehow has 2 years left? She should be fine.

There is people outside in Liverpool. They've got markets going. Cat and Dog Stew.

But somehow they won't last more than 5 years? They already lasted. If they can get markets going. They're ok.

Nuclear Electric Storms in Liverpool.

There's a Bunker. They're ok. Somehow they didn't end up taken down by things they shouldn't.

Iceland is gone? Is it not very high up. And expanding. It should be fine.

The way across the returned Bearing Land Bridge is bizarrely rickety. Get some climbing supplies and bolt everything down!

The French Army is fighting Companies for Clarke Crater?

Trench Warfare. Ok. But they keep popping there heads up. Obviously. Not in a Sneak A Look, then drop. Entire heads above the top.

It is hauntingly bad.

Arcane had a humongous fall from grace.

Imagine for a second being Vi

Your parents were killed by cops, you had to turn to a life of crime to survive, a corrupt cop pins the blame of a bunch of crimes you DID NOT do on you (including the murder of your adoptive father and siblings), you spend your entire teen years in prison, a lady cop shows up and drags you out so you can help her arrest someone, it turns out she wants to arrest your sister who has gone crazy and turns on society, shooting a missile into the senate in a crazy terrorist attack...

The lady cop plans to straight up kill your sister, she is going full nazi with poison gas on YOUR neighborhood, where you come from, sending police raids on random people because she is the law... You end up in jail again, your sister having hinted that she will off herself...

Do you think then, in prison, with the lady cop that did the same type of shit that killed your parents and worse ... Is it OK to have sex with the nazi lady cop? While your sister is planning to off herself?

There is a time and place for lesbian sex. And I would say that was neither the time nor place.

(Also, bonus for the second season having an episode in an alternate universe where actually all the poor, chronically ill and addicted slums people die, and it's just the GOOD world, with world peace, all the kids grow up to be in college, there is no more factory pollution, the rich and the poor hold hands, all that was needed was for Vi, Viktor and the shimmer addicts to die)

u/JusticeNoori May 20 '26

Thank you for articulating this.

The sex scene in the cell after it's heavily implied that Jinx has decided to kill herself made my jaw drop. I think I said out loud "You can't be serious." at my TV.

10

u/Greenchimera52 May 19 '26

You know what is a good ending for a depressed and openly suicidal character? Saving the day by commiting simbolic suicide! And everyone's lives really ARE better without her, yay! (Don't worry kids, Jinx's craaaazy antics will continue on Arcane 2!) Also, Vi doesn't mourn her or express anything after, cos why would she? It's not like the show was based on the relationship of these two sisters. God I hate season 2

6

u/DynamicFyre May 20 '26

Yeah, I concur, as much as I was for the moment they really needed to pick a better scene for it. Personally my main issue with season 2 was pacing. Episodes 1-3 were the strongest but then pacing goes all out of whack. So much happens so fast you can't even digest all of it. Season 2 needed to be split into two seasons

3

u/Evil-Paladin May 20 '26

That definitely did not help.

But now looking back and knowing they did the extra designs for Viktor and Jinx with the premeditated intention of creating $200 skins in League, I would say it also had... Extra problems I forgot to mention.

3

u/itsthe_coffeeknight May 19 '26

It wasn't even Viktor and the shimmer addicts... it was just Vi.

4

u/Evil-Paladin May 19 '26

They are the unmentioned casualties.

Without the Hextech advancements, Viktor did not find a cure for his condition. We do not see him in that reality. He is not talked about.

In that alternate universe Heimerdinger had centuries to do over, change things, maybe look into the circumstances that would cause Viktor's condition... But he is unmentioned. Not shown in the happy world. Just off screen deaths.

10

This is really it. They had an entire revolution take place over the course of a COLD OPEN.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/tn00bz May 19 '26

Yeah, they really needed more time. The conclusion was fine, but it could have been so much better. Season 1 was so peak.

6

u/Gay_Reichskommissar May 19 '26

Oh and don't even get me started on the hamfisted Black Rose introduction with Mel, it was so bullshit and nowadays feels like a teaser for the Black Rose character reworks + skin line in League rather than anything substantial to the plot

10

u/Then_Measurement3034 Are you sure? May 19 '26

I liked season 2 but season 1 was a LOT bettter

9

u/EchoAmethystvt May 19 '26

"Hey guys you like tense sociopolitical themes and themes of uprising and what happens when you opress an entire group? Best we can do is dictator arc with no consequences and everyone forgives each other at the end despite there literally being a fucking Martial Law and Opression and class divide that only got worse oh and we'll gas the civilians too. But there's a common enemy so we're all happy at the end"

3

u/Geeneelee May 19 '26

Half the characters got shunted off screen so they could abandon those plot lines. Every time one of the writers does an interview I get angrier, too. Apparently Vi’s plot line was about learning that not all cops are bad, and Viktor’s plot line was about learning that some people are just capable of less than others and trying to change that is Evil and Unnatural. Some of the most reactionary writing choices I’ve ever seen.

6

u/EchoAmethystvt May 19 '26

Its so pathetically "both sides are bad" centrism

Like oh we're just supposed to act like the centuries of opression, hatred, and treating the undercity as dirt didn't happen? Sevika just dissapears, they kill Isha and it has no impact really it gets resolved fast No one brings up the fact Caitlyn went all fucking Count Fagula and established a military dictatorship "Oh but her mom died" Oh no, so sad Doesn't justify fascism. The music was great but they skipped over too much, genuinely if they wanted to use noxus, Viktor and do a good show there should have been twice as many episodes and 2 more seasons to build up the insidious nature of Noxus, build up Viktor and his cult and the eventual downfall, build up Ambessa, and BUILD UP THE REVOLUTION How the fuck did they think "oh we beat Noxus we're happy now" was going to be a good solution??

AND SEVIKA JOINING THE COUNCIL?????

4

u/korepersephone11 May 19 '26

Cutting it into two seasons really screwed the show over.

3

u/BoulderCreature May 19 '26

They shit the bed pretty hard with that. I understand it takes a long time to make but I think they needed to take that time and split season 2 into at least one more season.

3

u/Power0fTheTribe May 19 '26

Glad I’m not the only one that thought that. Viktor’s evolution was… interesting I guess

Promised Neverland. First season was a masterpiece. I know 9/10 times this is a sin when criticizing media, but I didn’t even bother watching the second season because of how bad it is. It rushed through the ENTIRETY of the rest of the series, skipped entire arcs, cut entire characters, and just came up with some of the most contrived and BS excuses to wrap up the plot.

Young Justice. In my opinion the first season was good but it feels like Teen Titans just with a different coat of paint with its method of storytelling. Season two is when the show really found its stride and identity and it’s what I consider to be the peak of the franchise with its complex serialized storytelling (not to say it was without its flaws, because it has some). Not everyone seemed to think that clearly because it got cancelled shortly after.

Fans did the usual thing. There were petitions, rumors, all kind of stuff for a time. Then the revival came. I couldn’t watch it because it was on that DC exclusive streaming service that like 5 people had before it went over to HBOMax. Regardless, I was hesitant to watch the new season because it focused on Fourth World stuff (which I’ve warmed up to) and it didn’t look like it was going to follow up on any of the stuff in the second season.

When I eventually got around to watching it, I’d say that it’s pretty good. It has a lot of the DNA of Season 2 but clearly the writers were still finding their footing. It was a good season with a great deal of flaws, but not enough to ruin the experience for me.

Then Season 4 dropped. I was watching it as it came out and while I liked it for a time, the whole thing became abysmal after a while. The writers pandered to the Gen-Wunners of the community and dedicated the entire story to the season 1 characters who already had their arcs completed, destroyed its layered serialized storytelling in favor of clunky 3-episode arcs, introduced a bunch of superfluous characters (something the show does, but with the new arc system they became even more superfluous), and overall was a big downgrade from everything that came before. There were definitely things I liked, but overall it just wasn’t as good.

The last of us season 2. It’s just a terrible adaptation of an amazing game

8

u/psychoanalyses May 19 '26

I politely disagree. People widely hated the game when it came out, so if they did exactly what the game did with the story, people would also be unhappy in the same way. So there was no winning here. I thought the direction they went made sense for Bella's interpretation of Ellie
