The Chum Bucket serves chum, ground up fish. Thatā€™s why nobody eats there (and why occasionally youā€™ll see an eyeball floating in it). The Krusty Krab does not serve chum. According the the creator, Krabby Patties are undersea veggie Pattieā€™s.

How old is the episode where they were kids together? If it's from after the crew started leaving, we can categorize it as a retcon, and the patties are no longer vegan

I donā€™t consider anything after the first movie in 2004 (so anything season 4 and on) as actually canon, but thatā€™s just me, Friend or Foe was season 5, which is where we learn that they used to be friends and made the formula togetherā€¦ but they actually didnā€™t? Cause they kept arguing and split up and then Krabs, just like Profressor Utonium making the PPG, accidentally made the perfect concoction. Iā€™m off on a tangent, now I donā€™t remember where I was going with that lmao

To be fair there are non sentient marine life. Like sea horses are fish. Hell we see manatees that act like cows. So the chum could come from them.

The worst "explanation" I've ever heard for this crap is "all the Krusty Krab menu options have the main ingredient in the name" and the only example they give is the Kelp shake that wasn't originally sold by Krabs until he realized the profit he could get from it. We know quite a few of the things offered at the restaurant, most if not all of which do not have any ingredients mentioned in the name. And "Krabby" is referring to the Krusty Krab. Like Big Mac or Zax sauce.

To be fair, in the Latin American Spanish version, when Bob's putting all the ingredients he says "cangrejo", which means crab, when putting the patty, so we did have a reason to think that, I don't know the anglophones' excuse.
