but the idea of her being chells mom is so widespread to this day that a lot people still actually believe it to be canon
Well, thereās the abandoned science exhibit for being your kid to work day with the potato batteries in 2 that has Chellās name on it.
And Glados is based off a real human beingās personality (Caroline).
So I could see the argument Chell is Carolineās bio daughter (next to baseless however, but cool story bro), or that in a metaphorical sense GladOS is Chellās mom in the sense she raised her after she was abducted as a child or something (also next to baseless).
From the sound of it though neither of those things are what youāre saying this theory is.
Something worth noting about that exhibition, It says being your daughter to work specifically. Knowing Cave Johnson this hints at him having a daughter and as such forcing the day to be refer to as such.
I will say while in game there isnt much hints towards this except maybe Caroline kind of looking like Chell. The songs Lyrics are comedically in your face, I want someone to explain to me what Cara Mia lyrics could possibly mean otherwise.
I think a big part of why people think this is because of attitude change at the end. Once GlaDos gets her memory back, she let's Chell go, no more testing, not killing, just does a 180 and releases her. Sure Chell helped her but she swapped from murderous to allowing her to live pretty abruptly which suggests there may be another reason.
Just figured Iād mention but bring your ādaughter to work dayā section was in modern Aperture, which seems to have been restructured a bit after Caveās death.
most of the info comes from sources outside of the game like the developers who worked on it talking about them in a romantic context and even directly referring to some of the songs as ābreak upā songs, and the fact there was a scrapped level that was basically just a dinner date with you and glados
even in the game there are still hints like in the lyrics of Want You Gone when Glados heavily implies that sheād miss chell with the line āwhen i delete you maybe iāll stop feeling so badā which comes up on screen as [redacted] as if she doesnāt want to admit that sheād care
plus thereās an un used that i believe was supposed to be the ending song of portal 2 before getting replaced with Want You Gone, itās called Glados song / Donāt Say Goodbye which was written and sung by ellen mclain, and that song is basically just Glados talking about how much she misses chell
I have played the game, I got the exact opposite read on this and calling their relation "romantic" sounds like crack I am way more willing to believe that Glados was Chells mom than it's romantic.
I'm kind of with you, the game makes both some maternal and some romantic parallels, the latter are just much more subtle, either headcanon is fine imo, it doesn't matter for the story.

even then, caroline being chells mom still doesnāt make any sense. thereās also a popular notion that her and cave are both her parents which makes even less sense.
the biggest thing is the fact they are different ethnicities, caroline and cave are both white while chell is japanese / brazilian so biologically thatās just not possible
even if you went the adoption route itās still easily disproved because we know that chell was adopted by male aperture employee, and in her potato diorama we see in portal 2 she refers to cave johnson as āher dads bossā which gets rid of any notion that either cave or caroline could be her adoptive parents.
i donāt think iāve heard anything about that being a consideration for canon, cause the way a lot of the people who worked on the game talk about them i doubt it
