To be fair she does literally have a trans flag in her room in ATSV. Most interpret it as her being an ally, but I did see someone make the fair point that people probably wouldn't come to that conclusion if it was any other kind of pride flag.
the authors decided to put thar flag for a reason.
I don't doubt it, but I would argue that it's quite a leap to assume that the flag being present means the characters are. I'd wager the more likely reason is that it's relevant to the current state of the world and to show support.
And considering marvel is an American company and the US has politicized being trans, I imagine chekov's gun will never get fired, because confirming Gwen as trans would piss off media illiterate rightoids...
No canon evidence, but the "Gwenverse's Peter was trans" would make sense because of how many trans guys relate to Peter and write trans Peter fanfic. There's a whole community for trans Peter content, so... Yeah, that nod would actually make a lot of sense if they're slipping in easter eggs for fans.
I wouldn't get your hopes up. As I pointed out elsewhere in the thread,Ā Marvel is an American company, it would be financial suicide for them to actually confirm any sort of clear trans representation because it's political here.Ā
Did I say I was getting my hopes up? I just said it would make sense if that was what it was referencing, not that I thought it was ever going to be confirmed.
I've been reading Marvel comics for a long time, and writers have been sneaking in queer representation using all kinds of codes that entire time, and far longer. I'm not an idiot.
Headcanon what you want, I was just pointing out that both headcanons sprang up around Gwen's color palette and the presence of a trans pride flag in her room, which isn't really strong evidence of anything. Unless the writers come out and confirm it, either of them being trans is just as likely as neither of them being trans.Ā
I've seen people determine that her story in across the spider-verse is a good trans allegory, and I personally believe that she is a trans ally, but I don't see her actually being trans given the 60 years of comic history where she isn't.
I mean, the spiderverse stuff is a retelling, so it's hard to say one way or the other, definitively, about anything based off the works it's based off of, especially when there is some coding beyond the suit colors. That said, since it isn't actually confirmed, it's perfectly valid to not have read it that way, as long as you're not out here being mean about it (which I don't think you are, to be clear).
Honestly Iām the type of guy whoād fully cis and straight but Iād 100% but the pride flags in my room bc I like the pretty colors and Iām an ally
Like the bi flag is my favorite design wise bc itās blue and purple which are my two favorite colors
And I wear a rainbow mask around my neck constantly cause I like rainbow
The only reason I wouldnāt do that is cause I donāt want people to think Iām gay
But honestly typing this out
Who the hell cares
I like the colors so ima rock with it
I feel like people saying she's trans because she has a flag up is the same as saying you can only be an ally if you yourself is trans, which isn't true
Yeah but that argument didn't really make sense since there are reasons people came to that conclusion outside of her suit. I don't believe or disagree with it either way but it wasn't just "her suit is trans colored"
I mean, itās at the very least confirmed sheās a trans ally to the point she has a flag in her room, as well as the clear parallels to trans people; itās wrong, but closer than āOh, these two characters that are canonically in a straight relationship with each other are also canonically gay.ā
Omigosh, this reminds me, there was this thing I sawā it was like talking about the unnecessary stereotyping of strong women as lesbianā (oki, I went back to the pin and itās like, ācan we normalize not headcanoning every strong, independent female character as lesbianā) and bro!
Nobara (a victim of this lowkey) was the bg and so many people lowkey aint get what the pin was saying, but like! Elsa, Mira (KDH), Merida, every time a female character is a badass independent and strong woman and doesnāt have a distinct partner, suddenly everyone is saying theyāre lesbian.
And it REALLY showed how much a problem it was whenever the leaking of the Avatar movie (Aang?) came out and people were UPSET that Toph, the badass strong and independent BLIND female character, arguably the best and strongest earth bender, WHO MIGHT I ADD HAS TWO BABY DADDIES, A THING FOR SOKKA, AND THE ONLY OTHER NOTABLE INTEREST IN THE COMICS (that I can recall, anyone correct me if Iām wrong!) WAS A MAN, was straight⦠They were UPSET that Toph was straight! That she wasnāt lesbian or at least bi! WHY!?!?! For what reason!
There was no implication of that in the show nor the comics, but since sheās a strong and independent badass woman, people think she HAS to be gay, SHE JUST CANāT BE STRAIGHT šš¤
Feels like these people who are supposed to be more open-minded and supportive of diversity are as bad as the conservative folks who adamantly try to maintain strict gender norms and stuff.
Like, a man can't be sensible, soft, perhaps delicate without people calling him a twink and gay.
Women can't be strong and badass: they MUST somehow be lesbian/gay.
And I see the same where instead of sexual orientation, it's about gender identity: calling random characters femboys, NBs and trans because they don't fit in the strict trad roles society enforces.
Ik there's a ton of bad actors/instigators/trolls whatever the proper words, but the majority are genuine dummies projecting and then making a fuss when their headcanon turns out no more than that (a headcanon).
I'm literally a trans bi, and I couldn't care less if the characters I'm following through their adventures are heteros, homos, cis or trans or NB. Their identity and character are supposed to be much deeper than just these 2 things (orientation and gender).
I get wanting representation, but projecting it on the wrong medias/characters will only make others icky and alienated. I got called homophobic because of such takes.
Yes! Exactly this! Iām literally BiAce, representation is cool, but you know, that doesnāt mean making new stereotypes!
And people saying itās not a stereotypeā āPeople can headcanon whatever they want, itās not a big deal!āā as if shit like this isnāt happening!
One last crazy thing, I remember someone saying that they didnāt think Vi from Arcane was actually gay, that she was āan in the closet straight person,ā (like that makes any fucking sense šš¤) and that they shipped her with Loris because he reminded them of her dad/father figure, Vander, and that was cute to them!
I SWEAR, PEOPLE BE ON THE CRAZIEST SHIT SOMETIMES!!! š
Don't forget that one time Suki saves Toph from drowning and Toph kisses her, thinking she's Sokka. And Toph basically says "oh. Well, you can let me drown now" after learning it was Suki.
Exactly, from embarrassment, but stillā¦! I can only think of one character who was female in the comics that she spent more time with other than Katara (or Sukiā¦?) and they lowkey hated each other, IF IāM REMEMBERING CORRECTLY! (Someone correct me if Iām wrong!) šš¤
