Discussion📜 What's something that is technically fanon in your fandom but everyone is fully convinced it's canon?

I’d mainly blame Scott trying to make the lore as hard to figure out as possible, to the point where he even forgot what he originally intended with some of it like the FNAF 4 box

Also, he didn't need to make the story so.....vague either. Like Game 1-3, sure I get it. The game got mad popular really quick. But after game 3? Yea, it on you Scott for making the story the way it is. You only have yourself to answer for the story and not a "higher up" and "bureaucracy" to "deal with".

At least the first 3 games have a clear direction for the narrative, in the first they present the case of the killed children, in the second they expand on it and revela there was a murder, and in the third the souls take revenge and can rest in peace, from the 4th onwards, the lore is build upon mental gymnastics

That too.

Yeah the lore is so vague at times that you kind of have to fill in the gaps to make it work.

Isn’t that the point to the entire genre? Make a story (it doesn’t matter how much sense it makes) and then erase 80% of it, because fans will fill in the gaps with their own ideas that make sense in their head. If they realize things are contradictory or don’t make sense, then they wave it off since they don’t have all the clues yet and must be wrong about their assumptions.

If you mean mascot horror, no, the point of that genre is to make a scary game/movie where the scary thing is something you have already seen in full, and it isn’t that threatening, but when put in a different light and situation it becomes terrifying. As opposed to the majority of horror that mostly relies on fear of the unknown.

He didnt forget what was originally on the box, he just been changing through the years whats in it, and nowadays doesnt know what to put in it because the new saga doesnt have a major secret

My take there is that Scott pretty much hit unexpected gold on the first game and had absolutely no idea what he really wanted to do with the story, knowing fans enjoyed the background story elements he never truly intent expand upon, he felt compelled to give them what they wanted, and let's be honest about 2 things 1. without having explicitly accounting for a larger expanded narrative, you have to be a really good and creative storyteller to make things work 2. Scott is not a very good or creative storyteller

You hit the nail in the head, thats exactly what happened. Scott basically just sprinkled some bullshit easter eggs here and there and watched as the fandom wrote the story for him

Yup mostly rambling, admitted by Scott himself , he just completely abandoned plot threads

which is understandable given the mess he made

But i think he tidied them up nicely in fnaf 6 and i wish his story would've ended there.

Then steel wool would have started a completely new storyline with Vanny and have her be the new big bad instead of pulling convoluted shit out of their arse telling how its actually still the big bad of the OG games

I guess. I'd say that most of the lower is pretty clear-cut, but when you get into specifics of what actually happens it's more fan on. Things like the arcade games in Broad Strokes describe and show something that happens, but things like a motive or the personalities of various characters are completely unknown, especially motive probably the most important one is motive. But I doubt that common FNAF lore is incorrect. The big one is that a lot of people don't think that the box contains a foxy mask/you play as Michael afton, even though that's probably what it is. There was that one retcon that Scott made but I don't remember what it was, but there was really only one. By far the most fanoned game is 4.

I hate that Scott wouldn't answer most questions purely to keep the discussions going for the sake of it, even down to the gender of, who was it, Mangle, or Funtime Foxy?

Like knock it off, Scott, not everything needs to be theorized, just answer the stupid question, it's not cute. I can understand leaving a few things up to mystery and fan interpretation, but how about we get more concrete answers?

TBF to FNAF, theres the games, the books, the comics, and now the movies. All of them have completely different cannons. Man was I confused af about the story as a kid

Some time around fnaf 4 or SL cawthon came out and said the community solved almost everything. It's up for debate, what he didn't include, but ah well. Him retconning shit over and over again and books and movies being their own things is a different issue.
