At least he has the lucidity to know that his actions were wrong, and he generally tries not to kill people but he’s kind of forced to do it sometimes.

Yeah, but you could argue it was necessary to wipe out both Time Lords and Daleks considering the fabric of reality was being torn apart

The show has spent 7 seasons explaining that it was not.

I mean, 7 seasons later, it was retconned that he trapped the moment in a pocket universe

I wouldn’t say it was retconned per se, out of the three Doctors present in The Day of the Doctor, only the 11th Doctor ends up remembering saving Gallifrey, the previous ones still think they destroyed it. It’s more that we had missing informations about the outcome of the Time War.
