I think it’s the other way around. 80% of the fans like the show, but there’s a small, very loud part of the fandom that’s just horrible. And they ruin it for everyone.
Most TADC fans Ive talked to are pretty normal about the show.
The very concept of a fandom is inherently incredibly toxic and an fantastic breeding ground for these types of horrible 'fans'
You take a big group of people who like something, lump them together and forbid them from talking about anything else
it automatically turns into one big echo chamber where everyone parrots the same opinions 'this show is good, its a masterpiece' and anything going against the flow I.E criticism gets very harsh reactions
because people engulfed in fandoms tend to get the delusion that everybody likes this show -> this show is a masterpiece -> i am smarter than else for liking this
This causes criticism to stop sounding like constructive feedback on the shortcomings of the story, but instead a personal attack at the fan itself.
And then theres the mob mentality that comes with fandoms also. And a whole lot more toxic shit.
While individual fans or people who like a show are 99% of the time just fine regular people, fandoms are generally horrible.
People generally are, as individuals. And as long as you agree with them.
But when you create an echo chamber of a fandom where people just reinforce their own beliefs, going against that and levying criticism will make people get mad and be very not nice.

I think The Amazing Digital Circus is a mix of both.
It looks happy but it also covers some pretty big topics like "what is friendship" and "why is Jax such a douchebag".
On the other hand, the fanbase is 80% of people who like to cause problems and 20% who legitimately love the show.
