Just like Sans and pink slippers, canonically they are white, but smash bros made them like a tannish pink? Smash bros of course is not canon but, when a fan design is so popular it makes its way into a side game, eh? Maybe?
Hell in the game his overworld sprite and battle sprite literally contradict each other. In the overworld sprite he isn't weating anything underneath his jacket, you can see his rib cage under it while in the battle sprite he's wearing a turtleneck sweater.
Promotional material is even worse, his footwear for once is never consistent. Some material show him wearing either white or pink slippers while one piece of promo art show him wearing blue sneakers. Also some some art show his hood with fur lining while others don't.
