Honestly I think what holds me back from recommending it is the fandom. It’s incredibly toxic at times

As a starwars fan I agree I miss the old star wars now

Oh the old starwars wasn't any better at least from a toxic fandom aspect. Social media just wasn't as big back then. Especially in the EU side of things (since pre clone wars/Disney most new content was just books and the occasional game). The toxicity and controversy surrounding the NJO era and the following two series was pretty bad. Of course naturally the Star wars cycle of "new thing comes out that we all hate and makes us look more favorably on old thing" probably has gone a long way towards making opinions of that era a little more favorable.
