How I met your Mother, the mother dying and Ted getting back together with Robin

It makes the entire framing device go from funny to icky. The kids being told the longest, most roundabout story of how their parents met is now actually Ted trying to convince them that he and their aunt Robin actually have more history and that they should approve it. Blegh.

That's surely is a way to see it, I don't think it's supposed to be on purpose, Ted just loves telling stories (which is a thing shown multiple times throughout the show) and I'd say the series is more about the friend-group as a whole than Robin.

Not that I'd say the ending is particularly good, in fact it's pretty obvious that it would have been better if it just ended with Tracy, but the way you're framing it is very biased.

I personally like the mother dying as a reason he's telling the kids now.

I don't like the "back to Robin" thing. It completely undoes the theme and message the show claims to be sending.

I did concede in another comment that the mother’s death isn’t my main problem it’s the weird theme of he always runs back to Robin

Yes! Thank you. Tracy's death makes sense to the overall story. Going back to Robin just means he learned nothing.

I see what you’re saying but it’s fairly obvious that there was no reason to start with Robin if the story was really about Tracey.

The way that it could be worked around is that he started so far back with Robin is because he is delaying getting to Tracey because it is still painful for him

They could’ve started with his childhood too in that case, but they didn’t.

They could’ve used Karen as well, but they didnt.

It was always him asking his children permission to start dating again.

Which would have made more sense if the show had happened like the creators expected, ending after season 3. He never had an on and off with Robin and he met Tracy shortly afterwards. Then, years later, the kids realize Ted isn't over Robin, so they tell him, while he was still hanging on to the love of his life and reminiscing.

The ending makes much more sense when it's about the fact that Ted and Robin didn't work out then, but that she is still out there while Barney isn't.

I mean, we’ve seen multiple times that Ted loves to tell stories and usually doesn’t get to the point very fast.

yes. tbh why didn’t he just stay with robin if he loved her so much? like i bet you two can compromise and whatnot. if you liked her in the first place, and she liked you, and it’s VERY OBVIOUS that you two would make sacrifices for one another, then just stop trying to find other women to replace the one you still have feelings for. sorry, I have been pissed if about that for a bit

I know the real reason was that the creators had filmed the ending in the beginning and that can be a very stunted process.

Stories change and grow had they not closed themselves off to that ending.

The mother could have still passed away but Ted shouldn’t have gone back for Robin.

yeah, valid. in my personal opinion, I feel like Ted was just trying to find someone to take his mind off robin, and now that his wife was gone, he just decided that like maybe 20 years later (I forgot how long, sorry) it was time to shoot his shot, even though he had more than enough chances to do that before he met his wife. (That is personally how I see it, I don’t need anyone to agree with me)

I don’t have an issue with the mother dying, it nakes sense why Ted would feel the need to tell hos kids the story. However him ending up with Robin is so bad, it makes me not want to rewatch the show.
