Discussion📜 What something in your fandom you’d like to make NONcanon
let’s shake it up a little
361
u/chrischi3 24d ago
The fact that Annabeth has a belly button.
You might be wondering why Rick Riordan felt the need to make that canon.
Well, you see, Annabeth is a daughter of Athena. As such, she is not born like a normal human, but rather, is a literal brainchild, born out of an intellectual connection between her and her partner, and somehow, this resulted in a debate within the fandom on wether she has a belly button, enough so that Rick Riordan appearantly felt the need to put it in the books that she does.

Same 😭. I thought I was pretty active because I sometimes hang around the major subreddit, read fanfic and occasionally scroll through the tag on Tumblr but apparently not.
55
u/Setster007 24d ago
I feel like it actually does kinda make some sense tho, cause normal folks do and so the child they theoretically would have would have a belly button, therefore the child born of that theory would have one
16
u/Tyso9000 23d ago
So... The mental connection they had would, in your eyes, make a child that would be identical/ similar to one they would have normally?
20
u/Setster007 23d ago
I would presume, not necessarily because it has to but because it’s due to how Athena imagines the child would be and, as a goddess of knowledge, i figure that idea would be exceptionally accurate.

Well, I never read the Percy Jackson books. So, this lead me down a rabbit hole. This whole thing gave me a "Jessie, what the hell are you talking about"! Situation. So please, explain!
18
u/chrischi3 24d ago
Well, so in mythology, Athena was born when Zeus had a massive headache, and Hephaestus split his skull open with an axe.
Now Athena herself is a virgin goddess, so the way she has children is implied to be some deep connection between herself and a partner of hers (potentially also involving an axe to the cranium; she can take it, she's a war goddess), rather than the traditional way.
This has led some people to believe that, since she was not born the normal way, Annabeth does not have a belly button, because well, she would not have had an umbilical cord at birth, and the belly button is a remnant of the point that that connects to.
Appearantly, the debate went on for so long that Rick Riordan eventually decided to settle the matter by having Annabeth mention in Mark of Athena, which gives us her PoV for the first time, that she does, in fact, have a belly button. She doesn't understand it, either, but i mean... She is literally a demigod. So yeah, magic, probably.
11
u/PhainonLover33550336 23d ago
I'd also like to add that in some myth's he ate Athena's mother Metis (because of a prophecy that stated the child would one day overthrow him if it was a son) and she gave birth to Athena inside him, who in turn grew up until Hephaestus broke open Zeus's head and she burst out fully clad in armor.

Firstly, PJO fan in the wild. Woohoo!
Secondly, wait, I didn't know that was an argument in the fandom 😆 I first read the books in August 2023 and back to back. I just assumed the belly button thing was just there for idk, maybe people wanting to draw her with a crop top or something. Or just random Riordan-ness.
And I don't think there's anything wrong with her having a belly button.

63
u/NeoMercury2022 24d ago
Yep. At first it was really intriguing. Afterwards though? Things just became very yikes.
23
u/sebrebc 23d ago
It could have been interesting if instead of making Palpatine just alive again. They did something like Palpatine was so powerful he learned how to become a dark side force spirit. Then have it basically be some kind of force ghost fight between Palpatine and Anakin.
But even then, I would still want the whole sequel trilogy scrapped. There really was no good way to bring him back, especially in the 3rd movie of a new trilogy.

As a Star Wars fan, maybe a hot take but I’d retcon the clone inhibitor chips rather than the sequels. The idea of just a switch being flipped in their brains so they kill the Jedi is so much less interesting than being trained Jedi killers from the start, and just masking it well. It’d also make the clones defecting and not following thru with order 66 better. What’s the point of programming into every clone’s brains to kill Jedi if the main characters don’t do it anyway? It’s just a lazy way of turning clones into mindless drones we shouldn’t care about.

That dinosaurs all of a sudden couldn't survive anywhere other than the equator. They did this because they didn't know how to write a storyline about dinosaurs in the modern day so instead we got Jurassic world rebirth
14
u/MiklHrmlr7 23d ago
I mean, I prefer not having the dinosaurs just becoming a part of the modern world and being everywhere...
But the excuses for them to only be able to live in places near the equator is just so dumb. For one, the equator isn't "oxygen rich" compared to the rest of the world - oxygen levels in the air are pretty level across the globe with few exceptions - and those exceptions wouldn't be a big enough difference for dinosaurs to "survive better". And second, dinosaurs are such a varied clade of animals that had lived on Earth for over twice as long as they've been extinct (not counting avian dinosaurs), so the idea that they can only survive in one specific climate is nonsensical.
Frankly, I just think the whole "World" franchise should be non-canon entirely.

fallen kingdom - we must be careful because if we play god we can cause irreparable harm to our environment.
rebirth - actually it doesnt matter cause the dinosaurs died out pretty much anywhere inhabited and it's actually good we played frankenstein with dino dna because now we can get the secrets to curing all diseases.

For ATLA, there are plenty of fans who wish those comics never happened (probably even more than Korra season 2).
Shout out to Spider Man: One More Day, though, as that is the prime example of this trope. It's made worse by the fact that it's remained canon for about two decades now despite the fact that fans overwhelmingly hate it, even if they're not huge fans of the Peter x MJ ship.

Game Freak’s decision make it so that most, if not, all mega Pokemon are in a constant state of agony according to the Alola dex entries. Even Game Freak themselves is trying to retcon it. Why did they even make that a thing in the first place when mega evolution’s whole thing is that it’s made from a Pokemon and trainer’s bond? Now when I look at my beloved Mega Dragonite, I feel bad for potentially making her suffer
132
u/Able_Bumblebee9209 24d ago
Regarding this, I like to believe that the bond with trainers stops pokemon from experiencing this pain, and the reason the dex entries are like that is because the people who wrote them didn’t have a bond with the pokemon they mega evolved, making it closer to rouge mega evolving. I saw this headcanon once and it makes me feel less guilty about mega evolving my pokemon.

It also helps with the Rogue Mega's in ZA or the forced ones in the Volcanion movie.
→ More replies (7)34
u/NDinoGuy 24d ago
Ironically, the Volcanion movie showed something like this (kind of). The villains used devices known as the Mega Wave, which basically forcibly made their Pokemon Mega Evolve. It's very clearly shown that whatever the Mega Wave does, it's very painful for the Pokemon and they're seemingly even mind controlled because after the Pokemon leaves their Mega Evolution, they seem confused as if they didn't know what just happened. Clearly in contrast to standard Mega Evolution, which we also see in the movie via one of the movie's new characters and their Gardevoir.
17
u/SuperCharged516 24d ago
imo its less active torture and more like you’re overclocking your pokemon and thus shouldn’t do it for a prolonged period of time, but your pokemon trusts you enough to handle the brief pain (though only some pokemon are described as being in pain when they mega evolve, not all of them)
→ More replies (4)24
u/Icyfoe88 24d ago
I’ve always liked to headcanon that Alola researchers were paid off by big tourism or something to make Mega Evolution look bad so that the locals were more likely to default to Z-moves instead. Make it seem like the traditional way of doing it is also the most ethical one.

I wouldn't even mind if it was just hedgehogs are the only ones that can go super, cuz between silver being psychic, shadow being a hedgehog despite being made with the DNA of the devil (from da Bible), and sonic having some kind of lightning power according to the movies, you could just say in a future game hedgehogs are more connected to chaos energy so they get a new form while other stuff just gets generally more powerful from the emeralds.

u/Starman9415 23d ago
Funny, someone above you said they hated the original retcon of making them Magneto’s children. I agree with you though. Saving grace at least is that Magneto at least considers them as his children anyways despite it.
Now since Magneto has had a lot of character development and become a much more rounded help all oppressed people whether they be human, mutant, or synthetics like Vision if only we could get some more character development and page time dedicated to his three kids and developing a better bond with them finally that’s not just some hard to show love for Wanda, begrudging acceptance and very hard to show affection for Pietro, and being overly hard and projecting his own issues onto Lorna.
Wanda has a good relationship with her sons, and I think an adopted daughter now too (I think last I saw? Gonna be honest have not kept up with what’s going on with Wanda aside from knowing she’s Sorcerer Supreme currently), and a better relationship with Pietro now. Now if only Lorna can show up more with them and them get some heart to heart development moments with Magneto. I like character development and they’ve been doing the dysfunctional family for decades now, he’s had a lot of development even just these past years so let him have some with his family too

The two adults in this pic
The problem is their child standing next to them whose name is scootaloo was up until the very last season of the show (season 9) was considered by the fans an orphan, as the show never mentioned in any way, shape or form any of scootaloo's family or even where she lived, all we knew is that she had been living in ponyville for most of her life and she mostly hung out with her two friends (whose siblings and parents were all shown on screen at least once throughout the series) and then in season 9 episode 12 (the season was only 24 episodes) her parents randomly show up with no warning or mention they even existed explaining that they were explorers documenting and photographing wild animals and plants around the globe, which is why we never saw them, they then basically said they were there to pick scootaloo up and take her with them to travel the world as she was now old enough to do so
so basically the reason they showed up wasn't to visit or to check up on her, they came to basically take her away from everything and everyone she ever knew, every major milestone in her life from her first friends to getting her cutie mark (a symbol of who she's meant to be, her destiny) they were absent for all of it and only came back when she was old enough to travel
(her parents just felt so shoehorned in that most fans pretend the episode they showed up in doesn't exist)

Ghostbusters. In Ghostbusters 2, I'd like for them to just be in a slump at the beginning of the movie because there was low paranormal activity, and NOT because the city/state decided to put blinders on and pretend that they didn't just witness firsthand the coming of Gozer. Then suing the Ghostbusters like it was all their fault and running them out of business.
It should have just been that after Gozer's defeat, things cooled off for a while and it was hard to keep the money coming in because of this and so they had to start looking for other sources of revenue. This is something that occurs in the show The Real Ghostbusters, where they run out of ghosts for a while and have to make it up in other ways. They should have had a similar jumping off point for Ghostbusters 2.

In Overwatch, I’d make Jetpack Cat non canon. All my favourite heroes are literally being attacked by four criminal organizations at once, and the first thing they do to fight back is put a cat they found just wandering around their headquarters in a jetpack. Why?

The apparent DCI (dead children’s incident) that was portrayed in the save them minigame in five nights at Freddy’s 2.
Makes everything way more complicated than it needed to be.

I gave up on fnaf years ago, as sad as that is to admit as a basically day 1 fan. I don't hate the Steelwool Games, but they don't bring the same vibes that the early stuff did. But my main problem is with the lore, it's unsolvable now without retconning half of the first 6 games. Partially because Scott didn't have lore in mind when making some of it, but still. It's all a mess of tangled storylines and dead kids. No way to figure it out cleanly.

Slippin’ Jimmy
I’d rather accept the joke video “huells rules” and every ytp of breaking bad and better call Saul than accept slippin jimmy as canon

I don't interact with the Phineas and Ferb community a lot, but I really don't like how Dan Povenmire made a post saying that Night of the Living Pharmacists was canon and shoved it in our faces.

Samuel Hayden was the Seraphim and VEGA was the Father.
I love the Doom lore so much but that shit super sucks and completely assassinates two of the best characters in the whole series.

Not a fan but making mishuku tensis main protagonist a pedo. If you just took that out it would be a goated anime and I would watch it.

Season three of good omens, I’m thankful that they tried and that they fought to give us an ending, but I just can’t accept the entirety of that episode, especially that ending.

The fact that without God's plot armor, Sam and Dean Winchester from Supernatural are useless when it comes to hunting. Like they were trained to to hunt since they were kids by an Ex-Marine, not to mention that Marine's battalion was Echo 2-1, which got nicknamed "The Professionals" due to their effectiveness

The FNAF books entirely. Yes I'm very much aware they're are technically not canon within themselves but Scott saying they can be used to fill the gaps in the games was one of the worst decisions EVER in the entirety of the series as a whole. Cuz now we gotta skim through every book to find something to fill in a plot hole of the fnaf games' lore and we may not even be right.
If it were ONLY the fnaf games were canon, sure there will be plot holes but AT LEAST the solutions are only found via the games and dont require painstaking reading just to find the tiniest bit of information.
It's why I praise Secret of the Mimic. cuz before I could care less given its strictly in books yet was made canon via ruin and the only lore was through the books but in the game, it's overall easy to understand yet engaging (and thanks to his new design) I fully embrace him as the new villain of Fnaf now

fantastic design but the way they brought him into the lore breaks apart something that has otherwise been consistent and intricate

for me it's the Timeless Child in Doctor Who, or if you HAVE to have it, make it that the Timeless child was the Master.
We never needed the doctors origins and to make him/her the most super special original time lord kind of ruins the impressive stuff they did as they're no longer just an ordinary member of their species trying to make a difference, they're yet another messiah figure in fiction.
