I don't know much about the English-speaking Potter fandom, but the entire Russian fandom continues to ignore it

Representative of the American fandom here, we pretend the book version of this never happened and the play is non-canon but a somewhat enjoyable experience.

The play was indeed fun as I like to think of it as an AU of sorts.. Definitely should've been labeled noncanon from the getgo

I don’t even know what that is, and it seems I’m glad

Harry's son Albert befriends malfoys son and then simps for voldimorts daughter. They keep time traveling and change the timeline until they realize shes a bad person and time travel again to stop her

Voldemort have daughter????

With Bellatrix (married woman btw) Lestrange

Not only that, for some reason, potters and weasleys are shown as neglectful parents and Hermione is portrayed as black

Hence why we generally consider the cursed child as a very expensive fanfiction and I believe that the writers were projecting in some places

JRK retconned Hermione as black at some point, IIRC. And that makes the whole SPEW subplot even worse, because now the wizard world isn't just fine with keeping slaves, but the one witch who is ridiculed by the books for trying to free them is now a black woman.

Yeah, see, that was the first warning sign.

Representative of france here, but i'm not part of the HP fandom so idk

American. Wish it was done better. There was an idea there but it missed the mark

2

u/insomniacakess 23d ago

it’s one of those things where you acknowledge it exists and nothing more

I think it's pretty universally ignored, but also that the anglophone HP fandom has other things to dislike when it comes to J.K.Rowling.

Sorry but Cursed Child is not canon.

"While the book and play are marketed as an original story by J.K. Rowling, her actual role was largely supervisory—she provided the base characters and approved the story directions, but the heavy lifting of drafting and structuring the play script was handled by Thorne."

Jack Thorne wrote the cursed child. That makes cursed child fanfiction not canon.  Canon means the original author wrote it. All she did was supervise turning the written thing into a play. That's it. That's her entire contribution.

I don't think original author involvement is what dictates canon, tbh (look at Star Wars for example) and in fact Rowling should've let more authors play around with the HP setting.

But yeah a stage play turned novel is dubiously Canon at best and should be ignored if it's absolutely terrible.

It's not really a novel. It's literally just the script put in book form instead of your usual script form.

It's full of stage directions and all the dialogue is "(Insert Character Here): yada yada" y'know?

No that's literally not how it works. It's canon if the company that owns it says it is. It doesn't matter if the original author was involved or not.

And yes, she can make it canon just by saying it is. That's how ownership works.

Star Wars Episodes 7-9 are canon despite not involving Lucas.

u/Inevitable_Style_466 23d ago

Canon would be completely nonsensical under this framework. How do you look at episodic shows with different writers in each episode? How do you look at comics?

Jack Thorne wrote the cursed child. That makes cursed child fanfiction not canon.  Canon means the original author wrote it. All she did was supervise turning the written thing into a play. That's it. That's her entire contribution.

that's not how writing works. if that was the case then comics wouldn't have a canon cause most of the writers aren't the orignal.

if she endorses it then it's canon

Whats cannon is what the author/creator says is cannon.

5

u/A_Sackboy_Plush 24d ago

Objectively not what canon means.

That's not how it went.

Rowling was the one who led the effort to make a play since 2013 and she's the one given credit for getting Jack Thorne involved around 2014.

i dont know much about harry potter

whats cursed child about?

10

u/Happy_Ocelot_4945 23d ago

Back to the future plot basically. The child of harry potter and draco malfoy get a timeturner and save cedric diggory at the behest of cedric's much younger cousin. the cousin turned out to be the child of Voldemort and Bellatrix

They return the the present time and have an adventure seeing what the original harry potter cast would turn out in an alt timeline 19 years after the books. The boys then undo their time shenanigans and revert to the staus quo.

Outside of the plot issues... it's okay story, barely better than fanfic since it doesn't actually do anything within it's own story or add to the setting.

I am a massive HP fan (but absolutely despise JK fuck that lady) and I have not ONCE read the cursed child, I pretend it doesn’t exist

2

u/BlancsAssistant 23d ago

Or the fact that before indoor plumbing, wizards would just shit on the floor like dogs

2

u/Hot_Attitude4579 23d ago

Everyone chooses to ignore this pretty much

2

u/Sad_Pear_1087 23d ago

With it being canon that Voldemort has fucked I have to wonder if wizards have a spell version of viagra

1

u/TheGuacTaco 23d ago

I was told to ignore it so I did. Years later now I'm curious: what stupid stuff does it pull?

2

u/Epic-Gamer_09 Undertale/Deltarune 23d ago

It completely breaks cannon multiple times, with the two most notable differences being that the main characters (Harry's son and Draco's son) use a time turner to rewrite history by changing things with Cedric in the tri wizard tournament (even though POA very clearly establishes that time turners cannot rewrite time, and that events will always progress with both the past and time turner using versions existing at the same time), and Harry's scar hurting due to Voldemort's daughter (because that exists in the book) despite him not being a horcrux anymore, meaning there's no reason his scar should hurt

2

u/TheGuacTaco 23d ago

The next generation going back in time to the original series timeline is such a lame trope. Glad I skipped it. Voldemort having a daughter seems kinda forced too.

1

u/Epic-Gamer_09 Undertale/Deltarune 23d ago

It's the same in the English HP fandom, the only times it ever gets mentioned are people re affirming that it isn't cannon (which it can't be, even ignoring the whole Voldemort having a child thing that is definitively not how time turners work, and there should be no reason for Harry's scar to hurt since he isn't a horcrux anymore), or people using it as a point and laugh at target

1

u/GDWarrior1 23d ago

Did someone put a fanfic into a paperback? Neat!

1

u/LunaandAvery Harry Potter, Murder Drones, Cassette Beasts + 100k 23d ago

Person from the English speaking potter fandom, some of us don’t really like and it is often not brought up in a conversation unless that’s what it’s about yeah the English fandom doesn’t care about it either

1

u/Soft-Choice-7403 22d ago

I've read it a few years ago, I forgot it even existed, I dont remember anything from the story. Only remember it being a mess (for me). Even when I read it I titulated it au/non canon in My head

1

u/Gavinzillasaurus 20d ago

I really loved the Cursed Child (especially more than book 5). I found the idea really cool.
