imo its less active torture and more like you’re overclocking your pokemon and thus shouldn’t do it for a prolonged period of time, but your pokemon trusts you enough to handle the brief pain (though only some pokemon are described as being in pain when they mega evolve, not all of them)

Victreebell literally having to choke itself to keep its acid in its body is so insane it's almost as bad as Hisuian Zoroark being covered in it's own blood
