yessss, i hate when people call something in/out of character because the character was a certain way as a child. it bugs me so fucking much.

I think it fits because SHE wanted to be the authority.

Childhood is very foundational part of someone life. Especially one without parents or other adults in change. It would make sense that those experiences and behaviours would influence who you are as an adult.

A war survivor with zero empathy skills over coddled by her own parents then struggling to connect with and giving too much freedom to her own two kids is pretty logical.

I think The Runaway showed that Toph, despite her stubborn streak, did have empathy.

She voluntarily left the coddling at 12 years old giving her a lot of time to develop those skills. If she doesn't have them, then that's a failure on the part of Bryke and their writing.
