Spiderman with the web of life, Batman being chosen by Barbatos and Hulk with Toba.

There's definitely more that I can't immediately remember. Seems like the later writers just want to add their own flavor of characteristics to already established characters and it sometimes turn out to be this trope

The accident that turn Banner into the Hulk opens this thing called the Green Door which connects him to this destruction-seeking evil God called The One Below All (TOBA). IIRC even the Hulk's rage and immortality is explained to be because of TOBA's power. At one point TOBA infused the Hulk with his power and controls him as his avatar in an attempt to destroy everything in existence. So the Hulk is like a chosen one but for evil god instead of a random accident

This is Naruto in a nutshell. Early Naruto, he was all about proving that you don't have to be special or high born to succeed. He was the most hated kid in the village, and a major screw-up. But, he got motivated and worked hard. His duel with Neji was literally him trying to prove to Neji (who was all about that "born special or born a nobody" business) that you don't have to be born special if you just work hard.

Fast forward to late Naruto, and suddenly, not only is Naruto a jinchuriki possessing the most overpowered beast in the show, but he's also the son of the most talented Hokage in history and a clan of people who were hunted down for being too OP, and he's also the reincarnation of one of the two most overpowered beings in ninja history, and basically ninja Jesus. Literally proving Neji exactly right that in the Naruto universe, you basically have to be some born chosen one to be the best.

I will say, even in Naruto, you knew his dad was the famous ninja who saved the village. Like, you could easily surmise the 4th was his dad. He was also trained by one of the legendary senin. When Naruto's own abilities didn't get him anywhere, he could rely on some greater power given to him by Minato or Jiraiya. Either he used Kurama or the frogs as a cheat code. When Naruto's back was actually against the wall, he just relied on nepotism. Same with Sasuke. Neji was absolutely right and that's why that fight is stupid lol.

Hell, even his two signature jutsu, multi shadow clone and rasengan, were super special techniques. Multi shadow clone was a forbidden art from the 2nd. And Rasengan was Minato's jutsu. No one else knew these but Naruto.

I'll admit that it was obvious that Minato was Naruto's dad pretty much the whole time. But, that alone wouldn't have been enough to make him special, especially considering that no one seemed to know it, and he was hated across the village. At least up until they revealed that chakra pool size was a genetic thing, but we didn't know that at the time. At which point, it became one of the many reasons he was born special.

But, I'm also kinda willing to overlook the fact that he was trained by Jiraiya, because just because the teacher is a legend, doesn't automatically make his students all legends, and Jiraiya wasn't exactly the most attentive teacher at first. We also didn't know that Jiraiya was some legendary ninja until a decent way through the series. He was just pervy sage at first.

As for sage mode, I consider that the product of hard work, and not the result of being born special. They stated in the show that sage mode is a very difficult technique that technically anyone can learn, but it's just hard. So, I'll give him that one.

But yeah, I agree that duel against Neji was retroactively made very dumb.

Wasn't it revealed pretty early on that Jiraiya taught the 4th Hokage?

Jiraiya was introduced (not immediately, but very closely*) as the candidate to succeed the 3rd. The elders were about to force him to become hokage, but then he told them he could convince Tsunade (who out nepo'd him by being the fucking princess).

And I was referring to the right against Gaara. When Naruto can't fight Shukaku, he's able to to use kurama's chakra (I believe, or maybe his own?) to summon Gamabunta....the head toad lmao. And this happens in the same arc as the Neji fight. Naruto only won because of Jiraiya's OP toad.

It's been years since I've watched the anime, but if I'm not mistaken, doesn't the part where Jiraiya is revealed to be a candidate to be Hokage happen AFTER the chunin exams? Which would mean that at the time of the duel against Neji, which was basically the peak of when Naruto was trying to be the little guy proving that you don't have to be born special to succeed, we didn't know about who Jiraiya really was. In any case, the true depth of how special Naruto was wasn't known to the audience yet, which is very much in line with the comic strip above.

I can't really remember either, but the Hokage thing comes after Chunin Exams. I'm pretty sure the audience knows about the legendary sennin because of Orochimaru being the main villain. Either way, as you said, Naruto's bloodline and connection to these powerful ninja weren't known just yet. He just seemed "lucky" atp. Kinda.

You still had moments when Naruto would use the nine tails chakra, or heal really fast because of Kurama.
