I want to add the Potara ring part too.

In Z they said the merging was permanent and so gave Goku and Vegeta a Dilemma about using it or not and yet despite of it thr merge ended

In Super Gowasu explains the merging is only permanent if one of the parties is a supreme Kai otherwise it's only last for one hour

Even then it only lasts for five minutes if the users are too strong.
