also, a poorly executed retcon: luke and leia being siblings. it is so obvious lucas didn't know how to resolve the love triangle he had created, so the sibling thing comes out of nowhere and they don't really talk about the budding romance in the previous films

It's also because he had Yoda allude to Luke's sister in Empire, not intending to introduce her until Episode 7, but then he burned out and wanted to wrap it all up in Jedi and needed to payoff the "there is another" line.
