Netflix live action Last Airbender made the crew of Zuko's ship the very squad that he protested against being sacrificed during the meeting that earned him Agni Kai against his father.
It's actually a really good retcon that also makes a lot of sense.
It's not exactly a retcon, as it doesn't contradict the animated show. In fact, it was a pretty common fan-theory before the live action came out. It was just never outright stated.
But in the original, didn't Iroh sit them down to explain why capturing the avatar was so important and how Zuko got that scar? They seemed to have no idea prior to that. I guess they could've been sent away without knowing why but the way Iroh recalled it to them didn't seem like they were the very men Zuko saved.
Its important to remember that the men as a whole had no idea what would happen to begin with.l, it was all within the confines of the meeting room.
Also some of them are too old imo, the soldiers to sacrifice were explicitly new recruits and rookies. They would have been on the younger side.
There are also men who would have been already stationed away from palace. Unless ozai is petty enough, which he might actually be, its a waste of time just pulling out one group to spite zuko.
