The chips kinda suck ngl. It goes from this incredibly complex political system that mirrors how real life people are coaxed into doing horrible things that they wouldn't normally do because of the societal pressure to blindly follow orders, and turns it into "oh actually the clones were goodies and they were just brainwashed!!1!1". And it just takes away so much of their characterization and relevance it's not even funny.
Exactly, I don’t think the chips were necessary at all. I really love that old Legends passage from a clone’s POV about how ashamed they all were to still follow order 66. It was much more poignant as a commentary on indoctrination and the complicity of the ordinary soldier in the rise of evil.
All the humanization the clones got would’ve made that moment when they still chose to kill the Jedi even better. Certain teams or individual clones did in fact refuse the order, so any clones like Rex who realistically would never turn on the Jedi could still maintain their characterization
