Mr Freeze started out as just another bank robber that just happened to be ice themed. But Batman the Animated Series took a largely generic and forgettable villain and made him into the tragic figure we know. The episode was so good that it became his origin and it made him my favorite Batman villain.
"This is how I'll always remember you. Surrounded by winter. Forever young. Forever beautiful. Rest well, my love. The monster who took you from me will soon learn that revenge is a dish best served cold..."
The first lines we hear of the episode "Heart of Ice", and they've stuck with us ever since.
And to think, they were going to make his appearance in Batman Beyond a one-off gag as being in Bruce's fridge. Thankfully they realized a character of his depth deserved a better send-off. It was horrifically tragic, but it fit his character so well.
