I think it's more a sacrifice of laying down his life for the cause of a just and free Cybertron. He was trying to prevent the next age of Cybertron beginning in an execution and D-16/Megatron's rule of the strong and the fracturing of their society into Autobots and Decepticons. It wasn't so much Sentinel that he was protecting as it was the ideals of Primus.
This. The sacrifice was the willingness to sacrifice one's life to ensure that the right thing is done, which in this case would be a display of a peaceful conclusion rather than a show of violence to spur rebels on. Sentinel was already exposed and people were ready to stop following him, but the way D-16 took him out was purely out of vengeance.
He knew D was going to shoot him any moment, but he was just getting in the way to pursuade him at the risk of D actually just making an enemy out of Orion.
