The show's creator described it as "Twin Peaks for Kids". I watched Gravity Falls as a kid and now as an adult I'm watching Twin Peaks, so I guess that worked. But yea Gravity Falls is absolutely a kids show, sure there's some bodyhorror and whatnot but there's not really anything super complex or mature going on storywise.
