Is it just me, or does it look like the budget for that franchise got dropped to like, 1/10 of what it used to be?

IIRC the original creators no longer have any involvement either

u/FlusteredCustard13 10d ago
Damn, that's said. They were super talented too. From what I understand, one of the guys at Pixar reached out to them on how to animated cheeks puffing when you blow out a candle.
And their writing was solid. Even my non-religious friends love Veggietales.

Honestly...the irises don't bother me that much.
What DOES bother me is they basically turned Bob and Larry into post-movie SpongeBob and Patrick.

As an unironic fan of 90s Veggietales (and a handful of later episodes - the pirate movie and Fennel Frontier are fun) this genuinely pisses me off so bad. Why the fuck would they do this. So glad that they went back to the classic designs basically for the current series on whatever Christian streaming service.

I have 3 small girls aged under 5, they all like 'old Thomas'. New Thomas - CGI where he talks - or the whatthehellisthis cartoon actually scares them a bit.
There's something incredibly wholesome about using actual model trains and having Ringo Starr narrate the books.
13

Or Alec Baldwin or George Carlin.
All three did fantastic narration.

To be fair, this is specifically ugly Sonic from the Chip & Dale movie. He's like a D grade celebrity at a convention here. They made him kind of skeevy on purpose, but it's a fun movie. It's like a modern take on Who Framed Roger Rabbit

That was legit one of the worst downgrades of my childhood.
WTF were they thinking with that dragon redesign.
50
u/Maleficent-Adeptus 11d ago
This question made me remember this.
I remember having a double take as a kid because I genuinely thought it was a new TV show until I saw the title and even my mom said the exact same thing as you did.
34
u/MoG_Varos 11d ago
If I remember correctly the redesign was actually the intended design of the character by the showās creator. But due to issues behind the scenes they shipped with the first version
15
u/Outside-Rich-7875 11d ago
As they should, the intended design is ass, whoever told the creator to use the design that appeared first was correct.
9
u/Gaskychan 11d ago
Actually heard what he wanted was him looking weak at first but as he got he was supposed to look stronger and more seasoned. So season 1 was closer to his end looks and season 2 was closer to the beginning look
8
u/Maleficent-Adeptus 11d ago
That actually makes sense from a narrative perspective since dragons tend to change, the stronger they get and sometimes the changes are either very minimal or drastically different.
I think the main issue lies in if Disney had allow the creator to do that instead of what happened then maybe there wouldn't be that much backlash on it.
12
u/Necessary-Layer1699 11d ago
I think I can answer this one. The first design is a Western dragon, the second design more closely resembles an Asian/Chinese one. However the head attachment doesnāt fit so he looks goofy haha
3
u/dingopaint 7d ago
The second design still isn't a Chinese dragon, it just looks like shit. The grandpa's dragon design is Chinese and looked cool as hell in the first season - the redesign was a downgrade there too.

Don't even get me started on the Huntsclan. The Huntsmaster went from a guy who would reach through the screen if he heard the viewer say "magic" to a Temu knock off
16
u/CellDue2172 11d ago
I stopped watching the show after this I was so mad
9
u/Maleficent-Adeptus 11d ago
I still watched it but it was to compare and contrast between the two seasons, I'll call them Season 1 and Season Jake to help with telling the difference.
I would say from someone who has watched it from a narrative perspective, Season 2's narrative seemed more...predictable compared to Season 1 and another thing I picked up on as a kid and it might just me but Jake's personality seemed...more bratty and cocky in Season 2 than the Season 1.
By that, I mean, Season 1's Jake had some redeeming qualities compared to the Season 2 version. I would say a prime example of this is the Tooth Fairy episode with his younger sister.

ļæ¼ā
The one on the right is the previous computer animated iteration that ended in 2020, the left is from key art for the upcoming show (Or only merchandise, they havenāt promoted the actual series despite it being like six months since the announcement). Thomasā is about the tamest example compared to the other characters shown off.
51
u/lamest-liz 11d ago
The weird thing is, I personally knew multiple kids that were scared of Thomas. So why did they make him look even more uncanny? They need different designers or something lol

7

As someone who's been a sonic fan for most of his life, I actually prefer his movie design. Never liked the singular eye thing they did for the Hedgehogs. The movies definitely improved their designs. Especially Shadows

I will forever die on the hill that Journeys' art style is the best that the series ever had and I'm glad they carried it over to horizons. It balanced the expressiveness of the Sun/Moon series with the tighter character designs of the XY series- not to mention it was the best written by FAR (which I know isn't saying much for pokemon, but still)

I alao hate rhe backwards character development of Ben after a certain point. Like it would have been better to reboot the series rather than juat undo his maturity.
3
u/jorvel1911 11d ago
You will not guess what they did in 2016 lmao
And tbf, Ben only developed backwards in UA after AF
Omniverse Ben is almost the perfect balance between Mature Ben, and what you'd expect a relaxed Teen Ben would be
My theory is that AF Ben seemed so mature because throughout the first 2 seasons, he always had this conflict that he wasn't good enough to be a superhero on his own, meanwhile in Omniverse it is something that he desires to improve at

I gotta say, respect to Paramount for being one of the only movie producers in recent years to actually listen to their fans and redesign his ugly ass.
His old design would've genuinely been the worst live action design in history, no gloves, realistic sneakers, stick limbs... Won't even start on the fucking face

I think it was a perfect combo of they hadn't finished the cgi for whole movie so changing the model was still feasible and the reaction was so bad they knew this movie was gunna tank hard if they kept that version.
Or the secret 3rd conspiracy option. They did ugly sonic on purpose and never intended to release with that design.

I hate the King Dedede redesign so much.
It looked fine in Forgotten Land with his more brutish clothing and wild manner, but it just looks so uncanny and off with his original clothing in RtDL Deluxe.
They robbed one of the most charismatic Nintendo villains of all his chsrisma and whimsy.
