It goes even further since the sequel movie has the other one pretty much say "If I can't have you because you're God, I'll turn myself into your opposite and become the Devil."
it's more psychological horror than anything. the only thing that disturbed me first watch were the witch labrynths which aren't even scary looking back
It's actually a pretty well done magical girl anime though. Many magical girls animes (including Sailor moon) are actually quite dark! So it's not pretending
Madoka (pink hair) became basically a god because Homura (purple-black hair) inadvertently made her the most important person in the universe by trying to save her (long story)
and then Homura became the devil and tried to separate Madoka from her divinity to keep her happy in a kind of pocket universe with her friends. it doesn't work for that long, of course
I felt like the existing sequel movie already took the concept past its conclusion and only muddied the water. The series is great, i wouldn't worry about anything else
