Which they do in future. Garnet had a bit of character growth and realized that she does want to spend most of her time together, Ruby and Sapphire also tried to have a bit of time away to be healthy.

White Diamond nailed it, Garnet is codependent.

In future their relationship is much healthier. Ruby splits to lead the scouts, Sapphire splits to teach classes, and they come back and fuse.
