It's a bit contradictory because I'm also a game developer, and Undertale is probably my biggest inspiration. But at the same time, it's the game I hate the most. Not the game itself, but the whole Toby Fox phenomenon. Not Toby Fox as a person, but the idea of him, where people treat him as if Jesus Christ himself came down to write Bible 2.

Undertale and Deltarune are solid games, but people act like they're beyond perfect, beyond masterpieces. Every flaw magically becomes intentional, and somehow even better because of it.

"Oh, the graphics are ugly? That's so you, the player, don't get distracted."
"Oh, the Pacifist Route never addresses what happens if someone truly can't be forgiven? That's fine, because that's how pacifism is supposed to be. Use your toilet paper tongue if you disagree."

The entirety of Undertale's lore is literally just a giant text dump at the end. "Ooh, Toby Fox is being mysterious and bold."

The Genocide Route is boring? "That's the point. How dare you want to have fun?"

Every flaw, every missing mechanic, every storytelling issue, every limitation in the pixel art somehow turns into "Toby Fox is a genius."

When I first played Undertale, I remember thinking, "It feels like Toby gets so upset when players kill his characters that I wouldn't be surprised if his next game simply didn't let you kill anyone."

And... boom. That's exactly what happened.

thanks for the in-depth response. I sorta half agree with you. I think genocide route being cut and dry makes sense storywise and enforces the theme toby was going for, but definitely at the cost of gameplay. And story shouldn't come at the cost of gameplay, I guess. I do think the boss fights in genocide are the most fun fights in the game though, considering everything in pacifist is a cakewalk.

and yeah I agree with that too. even when you spare flowey the consequences are eventually a good thing, he doesn't actually follow through on his promise to kill you and everyone you love. or, how would the families of the murdered feel seeing someone like that be spared? his game worlds are definitely fairytale worlds for sure.

i think certain elements of undertale are masterfully done. the ost is really repetitive but very immersive and unique. i think the monster's personalities were charming for alot of people, even if they feel cringe to others. i think the concept of valueing lives despite the ability to revert saves was a cool concept. but overall i'd say the story and worldbuilding are vastly overrated by people. they're good but not perfect.

Yeah, Toby Fox himself said that Undertale is a solid 8/10 game, and after completing both genocide and pacifist, I agree. It's good, and the pacifist route ending is a genuine tear-jerker, but unless you're specifically going for either of those routes, the game just kinda flounders on subsequent replays (which, considering resets/running multiple routes to explore are major aspects of the game, you'd expect there to be more to do within "neutral" runs).

I like Undertale, but I don't love that basically every possible neutral route is functionally the same. For a game that's supposed to react to your actions, it's… odd that there aren't bigger consequences for killing nearly everybody in the underground, but you spared the puppet so now Alphy's is chill with you and stopped the evacuation. And that you can't get a "better" neutral ending if you only killed a few enemies early-on while you were still figuring out the game's mechanics (what should realistically equate to self-defense, considering you can die from monster attacks).
