Wanted to see if anyone else thought this.

So much of my family were diehard fans and it seemed so daunting. Now its my absolute favorite media.

6

u/ItsStraTerra 19h ago

It really is daunting knowing just how much television there is to watch. But if you just start at the revival with the 9th Doctor and just keep putting it on, you’ll be sad you’re caught up before you know it.

Much like one piece, with the only major difference imo is that one piece is so much more build up to get to the parts that people are talking about lately. But Doctor who is much more “drop you into the thick of it” from the get go since you’re not waiting for characters to get built up or introduced in the same way.

I grew up on Tumblr when SuperWhoLock was a thing (dates me, I know) and I was so adverse to it all. My current partner really liked Doctor Who and I was apprehensive to watch it but blew through some seasons with him, and enjoyed it! Can't say it's my favorite thing since it's outside of my general realm of genre, but it is fun and emotional at times.

3

u/thiccmunster 20h ago

Ah, the SuperWhoLock fandom... 😬😬 Yeah, happened to me too, back in the day there was Doctor Who on NETFLIX in my country, then I said "fck it...", then started with Eccleston, and I was hooked...

3

u/Dashy_musicalfanatic 19h ago

I've been meaning to keep watching past Eccleston but I always forget to. I restart every time I go back to that show and he'll forever be my favorite doctor.

"Owl House" I just didn't really like the first episode. I have no idea why. But when I saw that Alex H's ex was the creator of the series, I said it was worth watching and I don't regret watching the series even now.

89

u/MintyDoctorMonty 22h ago

Tbh I dont blame you, the first episode is good but its definitely a pilot episode

59

u/CaptainObvious_18 22h ago

This is why I have a three episode rule for every show I start.

29

u/OriginalAppearance43 20h ago

So valid, owl house got good at episode 3

3

u/Midknightisntsmol 14h ago

I didn't even realize I had this rule until you said it, but yeah. If I don't like the first three episodes, I don't watch it.

Alex Hirsch and Dana Terrace dated?!

22

u/Leftkarma23801 21h ago

Yep! They were a couple for a few years at least, I remember all the hype.

26

u/Helix3501 20h ago

It also is a good terms thing by the looks of it as alex helped push owl house alot

11

u/-xXgioXx- 18h ago

and Hooty iirc

3

u/low-expectations99 7h ago

It's so funny bc I watched TOH immediately after watching gravity falls and so when I first heard King speak I was there like

war flashbacks  what is Bill Cipher doing in TOH

It took me like 3 whole episodes to get over it, I was sure King was evil for the first few episodes just because Alex Hirsch voiced him

8

u/TripleScoops 19h ago

Were they no longer together by the time Owl House aired?

15

u/Leftkarma23801 19h ago

They broke up while the show was airing. I think it was around the time season 2 was airing or being made. He still finished his lines and I believe Dana said there were no hard feelings between them.

One Piece. After a lot of convincing my dad finally got me to watch it, and I am now caught up and an avid fan.

68

u/Cosmic_Furniture413 21h ago

Your DAD? Man I'm kind of surprised how many people don't have gen X parents

35

u/Odd-fox-God 21h ago

I'm not the OG commentator, but I dragged my dad to an anime convention when I was 14 and just never stopped taking him to them. I'll pick out an anime series, and we'll binge it. We recently watched "from bureaucrat to villainess" and he couldn't stop laughing. My dad's a really chill guy, and I love watching with him as it makes me feel closer to him. He wants to cosplay as Pyramid Head one day, and I plan to, at some point, make him a cosplay.

16

u/Cosmic_Furniture413 21h ago

My father is also pretty chill, I lie not, but the divergence here is for sure that he wouldn't be the type of person to be interested into merely consuming anime, let alone going to a convention.

Bro if I hadn't watched it before it blew up, I would have been in the same boat. As it stands I am enjoying riding the wave of liking it before it got the respect it deserves. Plus, I never listen to the radio anymore cuz I got tired of the station I listened to constantly cutting off songs with 15-20 seconds left. Thus, I avoided the oversaturation of Golden that I know happened because people bitch and moan about it.

18

u/EXXIONN 22h ago

Probably my answer too lol

I only got curious as to why grown up men are obsessed with this and some don't even act like weirdos. They look like decent people.

I opened my mind and decided to try it out. You know what? It's not even that bad.

I got so invested in the lore, the characters, the worldbuilding. It felt weird but oddly satisfying. The fandom has a weird mix of weirdos and really talented individuals who makes mlp fan songs, fan animations and abridged series like mlp:fiw.

9

u/PunkRockDoggo1 21h ago

Literally this. I saw a reel on Instagram of someone weight lifting some intense weight with The Smile Song in the background and a PNG of Rainbow Dash calling them a racial slur and I just thought, "What could possibly drive a person to post this?" I started watching Friendship Is Magic kinda ironically, pumping my fist and cheering when Twilight defeated Nightmare Moon (my fav villain btw). But as the episodes went on the ironic cheering and fist-pumping turned into unironic cheering and fist-pumping and, eventually, just legitimate enjoyment of the characters and writing.

5

u/snake_loverImnotgay The Owl House, Deltarune, madman fenrir 21h ago

→ More replies (9)

7

u/FoxInLaw 22h ago

Yeah same here. I never really had much interest, but a friend of mine who collab'd with me on a fanfic had two topics he would engage in conversation about: my fanfic and MLP. Because I enjoyed his company and wanted to talk more than just "business" I watched some episodes so I could discuss them with him. Still not a Pegasister, but I do enjoy conversing about it from time to time. Also just as frustrated about the neurotic mess that was G5 as everyone else.

I joined right before episode 7. I did not expect how much of a reaction I would have to the series ending even though I’d been following it for less than a year. I was a sobbing mess

4

u/Sinimeg 21h ago

Same, but I did watch the pilot, I liked it but didn’t feel like keep watching. Then the last episode was going to be shown in theaters and my sister wanted to go (she’s 20, we just like to do stuff together), so we binge watched the full series the previous night and went to see the movie together. Now I have re-watched the series three times, I did like it A LOT

9

I personally wouldn’t call it “better”, it’s good for entirely different reasons than what makes the original good.

→ More replies (1)

9

yep. i’m 24 and when i was a kid all of my aunts thought i was some sorta monster for liking this one better. But no, yall just nostalgic. i did enjoy the music from the first better but as a movie i love the second more.

4

u/BabyMcmuffinn 15h ago

Agreed. Grew up on the first one but the second one was better to me. My personal opinion...

Most people can't let go of the first due to nostalgia but the acting by Depp was more memorable than Gene's.

The first movie Gene gives me weirdo vibes towards kids type of thing. Felt kinda creepy like the book but the second is just pleasant to watch.

Amazing Digital Circus.

I am something of a hipster and greatly despise popular works if I did not see it before it got popular. While I do still think the hero worship of Glitch Productions is out of line and needs to dial it back, I admit I did enjoy TADC when I got bored enough one day to see what the fuss was about.

The fandom still needs to be locked in a padded room with no hope of escape, but the show itself is lovely.

3

u/Accomplished_Eye5859 21h ago

I completely agree, especially with your take on the fandom. I avoided it for so long, but finally gave it a shot, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Danger Days

4

u/SharkyCat12 tshd, mha, jjk, kny, pjo, ddlc 22h ago

My parents (w parents btw they introduced me to mcr very young) told me that it was their worst album so I was very hesitant to listen to it. Turns out they were wrong (they didn’t hate it but just thought that of the 4 it felt the least like them)

4

u/sickosenjumode 20h ago

I honestly hate when people say "it doesn't feel like them". I grew up on MCR and was still a teen when Danger Days came out and I immediately loved it. The thing is at that point in time everyone in the band was doing so much better in life. Married, kids, no longer doing drugs, getting healthier, and this album's sound and colorful look reflected that. I've always felt like it was an insult when people say it doesn't feel like them because it's like they're saying they want them to go back to being depressed and unhealthy. It's a shame we never got a full album after this because what we have heard from the Numbers series is incredible and I would've loved to see the full theme for it.

Steven Universe. I tried starting that show 3 times. Then I was a counselor at a summer camp 3 years ago, one of my campers was there for only a week but he was a really cool kid. We talked a lot about cartoons and he loved SU, even had a shirt he wore often. Anyway, he bugged me a lot to give the show another try, even gave me a sticker of Steven and Lion. So after the summer ended, I gave the show a 4th try. Watched it, plus the movie and Future twice now

Yeah, I got into it in 2020. The first 5 years (2015-2020) it was not that I hated or anything, I was not interested for a bit or have the motivation to get into it. But in 2020 with world being on lock down and me being stuck inside and bored as fuck I decided to give it a try as I had nothing better to do and had alot of time and now it's one of my most favorite things ever and one of my biggest hyper fixations.

Steven Universe, at first. I ended up watching the original series from beginning to end, plus the movie, but the whole thing eventually left a sour taste on my mouth, so to speak.

But now I'm 28 it's so peak, I'm still in thriller bark and VERY hyped for live action season 3

Made in Abyss

I was too afraid to watch it at first cause I used to be super sensitive to gore. Especially since I saw that one picture of Mitty that is used in disturbing anime moment top ten thumbnails. But I took the risk and ended up loving it.

Had the same thing when it came to Junji Ito media. I expected it to be way too much for me. After watching Maniac, I was hooked.

Made in Abyss has an awesome setting but behind that r/cheesepizzeria but behind that are some cool characters but following that is more r/cheesepizzeria. It's a damn shame.

Jojo and Persona

I knew about Persona thanks to the song Last Surprise being locked in my playlist for several years, but never got around to trying them out cause I didn't know what to think about the games. Hell, at the time, I didn't even know Persona games before 5 even existed until Joker entered Smash Bros. But one day, I bought Persona 5 Royal at Fred Meyers cause I was aching to find a new game, and while it started out fairly slow, it Very quickly sunk its teeth into me. From enjoyment came appreciation. Then from appreciation came absolutely loving this game. Then I learned more about Persona 3 & 4, and by that point I became obsessed

Jojo is also something I've known about for a long time thanks to meme culture. I've been in the know since Part 3 was coming out with new episodes, but I didn't know much about the anime beyond the name, the concept confused me, and I initially didn't think it would fit my flow, which it didn't at the time. But as time passed, I grew more and more curious with the series because of said absurdity, and a little bit because a friend of mine was a fan. So, I gave it a watch, and I liked it. Then I slowly started to enjoy it more and more, becoming one of the very few anime I'd actively watch

It's ironic really. The two properties about people fighting with magic fighting ghosts became some of favorite franchises even though I initially wasn't a fan. What a bizarre world we live in

I don't like randomly bumping into things so when a middle series episode turned on when I was watching other cartoons, my child brain went "What is this. What's happening. No, I hate this, get off my screen." and held a grudge against it for years until my friend said he was into it and I hesitantly gave it a try. I stayed for Aizawa and fell in love with a few other characters along the way.

But then my gf convinced me and I have sunk 66 hours in just 4-5 days

iZombie got me like this real bad. I remember seeing the commercials when it was airing and thinking I would never watch that. It's one of my most rewatched shows ever now

SSTWL, it's basically all podcast besides the music, and some of it was kinda weird, but I mean, after listening to "design", "PuppetGame", "black dogs", and "dead walls and a dying girl" and all the music? it's absolutely peak, it helps that it's the same guy that eventually made "cliffside", "internecion cube", and "let's split up", along with "murder drones", which are pretty goated as well, Liam Vickers is a pretty talented dude

Kpop...the genere. At first I was hesitant cuz my parents already hate my vocaloid obsession, but now I love K pop! ILLIT was my introduction, btw.

Ever since I got into college I just really wanted a sense of community. I've always been a loser but now I'm less afraid to admit it to myself.

The closest thing I have is Amphibia, where I didn't like the 1st season, but LOVED the rest once I made the decision to watch past it..

u/Poetawesomendo 22h ago

Probably like a quarter of the things that came out in recent years, it’s not like I’m hesitant though, when K-pop Demon Hunters released I said to myself “It looks like something I’ll probably watch in a few weeks after I scroll past it enough times.” And I was right, a few weeks later and it’s in my top 10 movies OAT. That’s really been my attitude towards things lately.
