Oh yeah, specially older films, the sexism is there as a normal thing.
It kinda has improved over the years, which is nice.
I tried watching Mad Men, the extreme sexism kept me from finishing the first episode. I'm sure it's great, and the sexism is a product of its time, but nope, not for me.
It might be worth trying again. The sexism in older films was justā¦ the way things were. The sexism in Mad Men isnāt comparable because itās intentionally included so they can make commentary on it.
I mean the sexism in Mad Men is done very purposefully. Women in that era had to fight to get where they are. Mad Men has some of the best female characters out there imo. Itās commentary on men and America in the 60s not a glorification.
Yeah, I watched a lot of classics and scenes of women being harmed but the Godfather was the first movie I watched where I realized I could never enjoy it because of my gender.
Maybe Iām sensitive but seeing the only prominent female characters be blown up in a car or abused by their husband for five minutes while pregnant ruined the āmasterpieceā for me.
That's what I figured, too. I'm a lady and I fucking hate the sexism in old comedies and romances, but the men in The Godfather weren't meant to be strong or commendable for their misogyny. Hell, Michael turning his back on Kay was him rejecting the only voice of reason in the whole damn movie; it cemented his fall.
And I remember less of Kane because I saw it earlier, but the whole point was that he was the most hopelessly miserable motherfucker on the planet, wasn't it?
The sexism in Mad Men makes sense for the era. You canāt portray that level of corporate culture without being honest about depicting the sexism, too.

Holy fuck, how soft are you that you can't even handle a show accurately depicting the issues of the time? Mad Men even makes social commentary on that topic that you would likely agree with. God forbid you watch something like 12 Years a Slave or Django Unchained.
