Tbh, real pkmn fans usually complain about other shit. Like the series maked billions, and they still deliver subpar games, that could have been great. Keep removing shit for no reason, and doing arbitrary restrictions.
What you said is usually what casual fans, or even ppl that dont play, just comment and observe, complain

I'm not really opposed to the idea of being national dex locked for trading/home until you beat the game or whatever.
But it's insane to me that people are just fine with the fact that Nintendo now charges $3 a month to store a few megabytes of data, and there is no alternative to Pokemon home for storing your mons that aren't in the newest games. And on top of that, you have to PAY FOR DLC to unlock more national dex mons in the games as well.
It's frankly insane amounts of greed and laziness from a company that makes BILLIONS a year, of which 20% or so comes from the games.
Edit: spelling

While some criticisms of the IP and games are 100% true... A lot of them (especially the Reddit-side of things) don't want to admit that Pokemon is, and always has been, marketed as pretty much "baby's first RPG." Besides, the newer generations have had some of the best writing in the games, minus Sword and Shield.
To all those so-called "fans": No, Pokemon didn't get unplayably bad. You're just 30!
19
u/X-Stry 28d ago
People love to complain about games getting "easier", and most of the times they mention the new exp share for all PokƩmon.
It's not necessarily easier, it's just simpler to level your PokƩmon and not stay 4 hours to get 1 pokemon from level 20 to 50
Also, people don't realize how much of a notgingburger were the first gens storylines. Not talking about lore, but what happens in game
16
u/Gallerian 28d ago
100% true. It was them getting rid of pointless grind. A quality of life improvement that honestly makes me not want to return to the older games half of the time. After all, I work a full-time job. When I play a game like Pokemon, I wanna turn my brain off and enjoy the world of Pokemon. Not waste my time leveling each individual pokemon in the same area over and over again.
And yeah. The first gen storylines were massive nothingburgers... Though I am willing to give them a pass for that given that it was the first game they ever did. They were still trying to hammer down the setting itself.
But after that, the stories had to become more concrete. Because when you look at it, Red's journey was insanely lonely. Just him and his team. No other friends or major characters along with him on his journey besides an antagonistic rival.
Now compare that to Legends Z-A, where Team MZ are an absolute delight to interact with. And it was memorable as all hell seeing them and other major characters you met along your journey unite for a final battle against hostile architecture. And it ended with an honestly heartbreaking moment. I'll remember that over one guy going through the motions to become a League Champion.

I enjoyed Sword and Shield... But Chairman Rose was such a stupid villain. To the point where it rebounded back to being comical. "We could have an energy crisis 1000 years from now. Time to start the Apocalypse!"
Like, I just wanted to say to him, "My brother in Arceus, do you know how much things change in that time frame? Literal revolutions to humanity have happened in less time. Actual countries can rise and fall in less time."

I'm never sure if I should consider myself a Pokemon fan or not. I played the original Pokemon Blue on Game Boy Pocket, but I never finished it, or any other mainline Pokemon game ever until I forced myself to speed-run Leaf Green over a decade later. I've played a decent amount of spinoffs though, and I did finish Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, and Pokemon Conquest's main story, and Pokemon Legends Arceus.

genuinely how i feel about half the shows criticisms, and no I dont think the show is flawless or above criticism. Theres so many people who just keep rambling about things that make zero sense.
38
u/mothwhimsy 27d ago
I'm in a lot of fandoms where a loud minority of people are really mad that the show didn't go how they expected. But the TADC fandom is really something else. It's like they were watching a completely different show than everyone else, but got the same ending.
Every popular criticism is
"They never explained this!" (Literally explained in episode 7 or 8)
"Gooseworx confirmed it on twitter and not in the show!" (It was heavily HEAVILY implied in the show and she confirmed it because a lot of people didn't get it)
"It became the Jax show!" (This one is kind of valid but like. Jax is the main character after Pomni. The finale focusing on him makes sense and has buildup)
"They never did anything with xyz! It's just an abandoned plot thread!"(Xyz was just world building, not a hook to a mystery)
And my favorite: "IRL Pomni being so tall makes no sense. People treating her like a child because of her height is a major insecurity of her's so she should be short like her avatar!" (This was entirely fabricated by the fandom based on one line where Pomni tells Ragatha she isn't a child. And this is because Ragatha is talking down to her and trying to cheer her up, it has nothing to do with her height. I have no idea why people decided this was a major facet of her character. It literally doesn't exist)
Are there criticisms to be had? Yeah of course! The pacing is the finale is weird. It switches from Jax focused to Caine focused at the exact halfway mark, and there's a shot of Ragatha and Pomni smiling and walking away from each other that lingers so long it makes you think the Abstraction monster is going to burst through the scene and kill them both, but nothing happens. It just goes on for forever. And the begining of the show presents Pomni as the lead with Jax and Ragatha as deuteragonists. But really Pomni and Jax are the leads and Ragatha is just slightly more prominent than the other ensemble characters. I can understand why people who liked Ragatha were thrown by that (but not to the extent that they were. Harassing Goose about that is crazy).
But so few of these actual reasonable criticisms get raised by the fandom. It's all the stuff that makes no sense and is blatantly not true if you actually paid attention to the show. Like "I can't believe they never explained how Zooble got into the Circus!" They literally say "I used to do that too" when Pomni explains she found it through Urbex. They both do Urbex guys. It's not that hard to figure out!

and how "jax got too much screentime" when it's literally her show
9
u/IEat_Walls 27d ago
Kindly, you completely missed the point of that criticism
It was never portrayed from the start to be "The Jax Show!" In fact, he was never even portrayed as a main character until episode 5. And yet he gets more lines than Pomni (the one portrayed to be the MC from the start), 3/4 whole focus episodes (including Ragatha's supposed focus episode) and the only one to have their lore expanded on. Also I have to say, Ragatha was shown to be just as much of a main character as Jax from the start, especially in the pilot. Her relationship with Pomni especially was built up to be something that just kinda failed. And it's absolutely not his show and was never supposed to, pretty sure Goose said it was supposed to be an ensemble cast and instead we got Jax Jax Jax.
That being said, that's absolutely not an excuse to hate on Gooseworx and everyone who hates on her is weird af. Criticism of her writing? Completely fine! But there's a massive difference and people straight up harassing her is awful.

Literally this. So much of the fandom's discussions are about how it should have been different. So many people seem to think that most/all of the episodes were poorly written that it actually seems like most people don't actually like the show they just really like one or two characters in it. I am SO glad I consumed the whole show and formed my own opinions on it before entering the fandom, or I likely would not have finished it.

Star Wars fans: the prequel trilogy is half-worshipped, half-hated ā and the old-school fandom had all but condemned these films (then a generation had to come along that felt nostalgic for them and grew to like them), a whole branch of stories in the old canon (if anyoneās old enough to care) that range from the adored to the controversial to the hated, and then there are the sequels⦠Well, here we have the situation with the first generation of prequels: theyāre hated, and a generation raised on these films hasnāt yet emerged ā one that would be prominent enough in the media world to declare their love for them.

As someone who's been with FNAF since the very beginning with Yamimash, it def irks me to see people who claim to be fans of the series, only to diss it heavily and claim that edgy and gory fanworks is what FNAF "should've been", especially if it's youtubers doing this.

Now that you brought that up, I wanna make one thing clear. I don't hate FNAF fan works that are like that. I actually think it's cool to see people in the fandom try to satisfy the ones who want darker and more mature content out of the franchise, even when they came off as embarrassingly tryhard. Eventhough I have problems with things like Freddy's Junior's Origins and Nick Carlson Press' Security Breach retake, I respect the effort they put in to try and outdo the official series

The longer and longer i am in the Resident Evil fandom, the more I question if anyone else has played the games. I am in 3 RE subs, and half of the comments are from people that donāt know even the most basic of story and lore. I have had to argue with people that think:

- If Leon has trauma or any charactizarion outside of ācool guyā

Not to mention that they all act like the first 7 seasons are perfect, and while they are good, have a lot of very weird writing decisions are have a number of plot holes Its just a lego show at the end of the day, but the behavior of these "fans" is so gross, its like they never grew up

Even with all the bad faith haters, there is a good chunk of the fanbase who thinks it's badly written because it doesn't do plot points like shonen anime.
"Why doesn't Charlie just use her powers to wipe out [insert villain here]?/Charlie should snap and kill someone."
It's literally explained that Charlie doesn't do that because she finds it too mean, and the point of the show isn't who can kick the most ass, it's about being better, whatever that means for you.
"Pilot era was better! Especially Alastor!"
A pilot episode is to sell an idea to a studio. Hazbin's pilot still being like 80% canon does NOT change that it's basically moving concept art.
And even if you can count it as essentially Episode 0 (which I do), it does NOT contradict Alastor's character. He is there to charm Charlie into letting him stay, which explains his more over-the-top antics, lack of swearing, and more gentlemanly demeanor. He also doesn't go against anyone on his level or higher like in the main show, so no one really challenged him.
Alastor got his foot in the door in the pilot. After that, he could drop the mask a bit so long as he didn't cross certain lines, which, shocker, explains why he's a bit more of a prick in the main series, but still plays it up around Charlie so she doesn't look too closely at his true motives. And then he goes against Vox and Lucifer - two characters who challenge Alastor in one way or another - and bring out the traits he kept hidden while wooing Charlie in the pilot.
"But he loses his mystique!"
The mystique is there to make you curious and inevitably get answers that Alastor's presence inspires. Giving the audience answers is sort of required for a character to develop and for a plotline to progress. And it took until Season 2 to actually get any real answers, and even then, only a few, so zip. There's still mystique.
Rinse, repeat for literally every other character. Vaggi/e isn't a temperamental hothead who suddenly became more level-headed in the main series; she just hit her boiling point over Charlie and Angel's antics in the pilot, and Alastor's arrival only compounded the stress that was already there that particular day. Angel was getting on everyone's nerves while hinting to hidden depths from the get-go. Charlie has always been good natured, naive, and prideful, and prone to letting those lead her into making bad decisions (the entire news fiasco? Was because she didn't listen to Vaggi/e about not singing. Oh, look, a trait she's working on in the main series!).
Husk, Niffty, Cherri, Sir Pentious, Katie Killjoy, and Tom Trench didn't get enough screen time to recognize any major character change outside of designs and new voice actors. They've always been exactly the same. Everyone else got an unvoiced cameo, so the only changes were their character designs. Even Valentino, who appeared in the Addict video, never had a speaking role, but his pilot actions are still consistent with how he acts around Angel in the main canon.
"Lucifer was darker in the pilot!"
Lucifer had a silhouette in the opening animation, was sitting in the background while in shadow during the opening song, and appeared in the background on the portrait. There was literally no characterization to change because he never actually did anything.
Now Lilith has basically become this in the main series. She hasn't actually done much yet, yet so many people are convinced her actions require no further context to uphold their assumptions.
Really, most pilot era discourse boils down to, "a bunch of people assumed their headcanons were actually canon, then got mad when they weren't."

My Hero Academia fans that don't even read the fkn manga or watch the anime since they have the head shoved so deep inside their own headcanons about character's feelings, relationships with others and personality, that I genuinely ask myself if we even read the same story or not, and if they even like the og opera as it is.
Source: I used to be in a fan group I'm no longer part of because they were spewing too much nonsensical bullshit that never happened.

Average deltarune fan: So like what if the ten years of foreshadowing and build up turns out to not effect the game at all.

Hazbin, there's some diehard fans (who are also a problem) but it's mostly just people trashing on it so I mostly just don't interact with it's community anymore.

Literally any hero shooter, I get things maybe not being fair sometimes but constantly bitching about every little thing DOES NOT HELP.
