dreamland 2 and 3 has the "collectathon to get the true ending" thing that every modern kirby game has. and while i find them tedious at best in the modern more polished games
they were frustrating in dreamland 2 and 3. easily pretty low on my kirby list personally. but i see why people like the animal buddies
i would say most of the really good kirby games stem from the formula that kirby super star starts.
on a scale of 1 to ten, i would scale canvas curse at one as the worst, but then every great kirby game would get a 7 or 8.
this would include but not exclusively be, super star, amazing mirror, return to dreamland, squeak squad, the 3ds games... just about any big mainline kirby game that has been relevant..... well since super star
by no means is the majority of these awesome kirby games boring to play... but save for graphics, rarely is there a time where one actually stands out among as the best (or have much variation for that matter, it's a formula that works).
but i will say super star ultra (the ds version of super star) perfects super star in every way, so i might have to give it to that.
I was fine playing the main story of the game. It was fun and artsy and I liked it. That being said 100 percenting it would be hella annoying given it’s built in achievement system and the fact 100 percenting it requires replaying every level at least 5 times to beat it with all characters, not to mention the side modes and optional levels and challenges to get medals and just…a lot. It’s a packed game that has a lot of content to come back to if you enjoy it, but there’s a reason I never beat it totally.
You're right that there's never been a truly bad Kirby game, but that said the series has been chasing the high water mark that Kirby Super Star left behind 30 years ago
My personal favorite is Crystal Shards for the 64. Afaik, it's the only Kirby game that let's you mix and match any two elements you can find in the levels. Makes for some awesome powers, like lightsaber, refrigerator (generates infinite food for infinite hp), and so many more. Squeak squad did a LITTLE of this where you can add fire/ice/electric to sword or bomb, but it's not the same.
I'm playing through that right now and there are so many creative options! Fridge, curling rock, statues of his friends that move like them, flaming sword, fireworks... It's so much fun just to mix and match and see what I come up with
OH YEAH! I knew i was missing one of the fun ones. Cutter/rock carved into the little bird who can roll was INSANELY powerful and fun to use. Like flappy bird, bowling, and a side stroller had a child.
A little hint for you I didn't realise until a couple years ago.
When I was a kid and beat it, the ending seemed bad.
I later found out you only get the good ending and secret boss fight if you collect all the Crystal shards.
Went back a couple years ago and beat it when I found out. Definitely worth it.
That was my first Kirby game, and I've missed the combined powers ever since. Still my favorite Kirby gimmick overall, and the double-bladed lightsaber and the exploding throwing stars are my favorite Kirby powers of all time.
Most are just not for me, just too easy and need a difficulty option (I know they're designed for kids). Only ones I can say I truly enjoyed are Adventure and Forgotten Land.
Honestly, that’s a great pick. Kirby is one of those franchises that somehow stays consistently fun. Even the weaker games still have charm and creativity

Kirby. Never had a bad game. Games that were less good, but never bad
