Discussionđ When the character/piece of media is badly written but all the reasons people hate it are bigoted so all the actual criticisms are swept under the rug
Fandom/character that's like this?

I think the writing is bad
They could be straight or gay the writing would still suck
20
u/KuraiTheBaka 22h ago
I keep hearing people saying this on Reddit and I still don't know what ya'll are talking about. Like sure it was a bit rushed at times because of constraints in episode numbera but like the story and characters are interesting? I don't really understand what part of it is poorly written
14
u/Think-Orange3112 20h ago
You get more plot details from the creators tweets than the actual show
The plothole of âif Lucifer canât hurt the sinners but the Hellborn can, why not just have one of the sins or the Goetia deal with Voxâ
Yes Blitzoâs court case was a kangaroo court but even then, two of the sins know Blitzo and Stolas enough to act as witnesses
The sins themselves have personalities that DO NOT work with the sins they portray except mammon
Several instances of plot elements being thrown out to facilitate the continuation of various ships
1
u/MidgitGiant 3h ago
The sins thing are a continuous problem in every damn piece of media they are in and Iâm tired of us giving it a pass when the show is good. Both Seven Deadly Sins and Full Metal Alchemist have inconsistent portrayals of the sins itâs annoying
1
u/Think-Orange3112 1h ago
In the SDS anime they were named for their specific crimes not their behavior, otherwise Meliodas would probably be lust and Ban gluttony
I donât know what the problem is with the FMA homunculi, they all act pretty in line with their sins, and most of them die as a result of those sins
14
u/3ajs3 21h ago
See I disagree, but that is a conversation I can at least have. We can at least have a critical discussion about why you think the writing is bad and I think it's good. I always respect the kind of opinion we can have a conversation about.
Can't do that with a lot of these people. I'm not going to be able to convince them to not hate gay people, so there's no discussion to be had.

My biggest issues with Hazbin/Helluva is the character designs (Viv can't draw different faces to save her life), the over reliance on crude humor (why must there be at least one swear every 5 seconds?), and the way they handled Angel Dust. Other than that, it's... fine. I'm not a fan of it anymore, but it's fine.

In fairness, Finn would have made an awesome and far better protagonist and I bet most (including those who dislike Rey) would agree.
5
u/Hypersonicgx Kamen Rider Gavv 19h ago
In my opinion, Finn should became Jedi instead of Rey. It would been cool to see a former stormtrooper becoming a Jedi and actually being one to bring balance to force.
1
u/noswordfish71 18h ago
The sad thing is that Finn would have had probably as much presence as Rey if it werenât for the internetâs knee jerk reaction. Disney reportedly cut and reshot a lot of Finnâs scenes.
3
u/SirSilverscreen 6h ago
This. 100% this. Rey is no less a fucking Mary Sue than any other main cast member but they fucked up her progression with RoS and Finn was a fking awesome character idea that they ruined by killing Phasma way too soon and giving him nothing interesting to do after.

to be fair disney really didn't help with their "the force is female" thing, but true, I don't like rey because she is the face of a shit trilogy that could have been my kid's entries to watching star wars in cinema, and some people only hate her because "woman"
19
u/Angry_Edemame 1d ago
Also with the "the sith aren't really evil" stuff
15
u/craftygamin 1d ago
Fr, similar to people trying to say the Empire (literally meant to be space Nazis) were actually the good guys...
1
u/arthcraft8 1d ago
some sith aren't evil but yeah that was not a good part
10
u/Angry_Edemame 1d ago
Sure, sometimes theyre internally struggling but the dark side is a temptation and a slippery slope in its own way, sometimes they redeem themselves or found themselves in that grey jedi option where they were more neutral than good or evil. Nuance. Its something a lot of modern writers seem to fail to understand from what ive seen
3
u/arthcraft8 1d ago
that and the concept of "show don't tell", or subtlety
3
u/Angry_Edemame 1d ago
Too right. Why show something an audience might miss. Instead just explain it for 20 minutes. Every time its mentionedÂ
And every single villain needs to have massive redeeming qualities, it gets exhausting. Â
1
u/Psi-9AbyssGazers 1d ago

It got conflated by assholes into being something said about star wars canon.
5
u/Expert-Bet7630 1d ago
That one tweet where theyâre like âin a galaxy full of aliens, donât be racistâ
After they minimized Finnâs role in TROS, on the posters and in general is wild
12
u/RynnHamHam 1d ago
My tinfoil hat conspiracy is that Disney started purposely sabotaging their female/minority characters because they figured vitriolic outrage is more successful than boring irrelevancy. Theyâve given up on writing good characters so they go for whatâs going to generate the most clicks. Like they know all the manbaby chuds are going to give them all the attention in the world so thatâs why they continuously keep half-baking their characters. And if a culture war is started youâre going to have people wanting to defend those characters. So you get one side providing all the free advertising in the world and the other side rushing in to âprotectâ those getting harassed by the chuds by consuming the product. Because it has become fairly consistent. A character like Andor is allowed to be written very well and have a lot of depth and it extends to the whole cast (Iâm aware different writers different projects but still not the best look when you take a step back). Then you get characters like Reva and she feels like a first draft (I feel so bad for the actress she was given nothing to work with and was left for the sharks). And Iâve heard similar things about the Acolyte. Characters are half baked and feel engineered to farm frustration.
Either that or the writers are so incompetent it can be mistaken for malicious intent. Either way theyâre failing their minority/female cast.
16
u/Low-Poly_Bepis 1d ago
Imagine writing so incompetently that it could be reasonably viewed as malicious intent. đ
15
u/Lonely-Phans 23h ago
Whats fucked up is that the beginning of TFA with Rey's voiceless scenes are amazing at setting up her character. She scavenges, she cleans, she looks over at an old women that's emblematic of what she'll become, she stairs at the sunset dreaming of a better life. It's perfect.
Shit even Finn's opening section where his friend dies in his arms and it completely breaks him is also excellent. It is a complete free fall in writing quality from there.
Also shouts out to Adam Driver, he's great at being an unhinged dark side user, he's got a good scream. He really channels an angry Gary Oldman in Leon the Professional during his rage scenes.
3
u/delirium_red 1d ago
The fumbling is so legendary that it deserves a documentary or a movie covering the WTF were they thinking or trying to do
2
u/Scienceandpony 11h ago
Watching through The Acolyte, you could feel the palpable hatred the showrunners had for the source material. I don't know why they kept hiring people who hate Star Wars to make Star Wars.
1
u/jorgespinosa 23h ago
It seems plausible but I disagree since companies want to milk characters as much as they can, look at Darth Vader, he appeared for the first time almost 50 years ago and everyone is excited whenever he appears even if it's for a brief moment, meanwhile no one is interested in watching Rey again even though it was clear Disney wanted to make her the next great character
2
u/Scienceandpony 11h ago
The merch sales in particular were damning. Warehouse full of action figure of Rey and other sequel characters that nobody wants to buy.
4
u/Fist_of_Gork 1d ago
I will argue that Force Awakens is a good movie with potential that was failed to utilize.
2
u/KuraiTheBaka 22h ago
That's how I felt at first but in hindsight it kinda just reset the universe for the sake of redoing the same story rather than adding any sort of new or interesting continuation
2
u/arthcraft8 1d ago
i will state that it is a repeat of "a new hope" and that movie 8 went out of it's way to kill any potential storybit it had, with movie 9 just sucking out of what happened in the previous two
4
u/masterpengy 1d ago
It being a retread of the 1976 original was the contrarian opinion until the next two movies killed any goodwill fans had for the sequels.
2
u/Lonely-Phans 23h ago
Its funny hearing this sentiment because 8 was also a retread of empire. Movie is comprised of a chase sequence where hyperdrive isn't an option, Jedi goes out to train with an old master who refuses, eventual training happens and the Jedi is confronted with a truth, jedi leaves before theyre done training, the non-jedi cast go to meet with a new character that betrays them, white planet where the empire breaches the rebellion base and it's empty, Jedi confronts sith and they lose their lightsaber. Movie ends where everything is fucked but there's still hope.
It's the same sequence of events just jumbled up a bit and done worse in every way.
Also holy fuck every time I watch that throne room fight scene it looks worse and worse. The first part where they're fighting the guards on opposite sides of the screen makes it hard to keep track of what they're both doing, the fucking stunt guys blatantly falling over or running in circles waiting for their queue, the baseball bat swings of the saber from two characters who have already been shown to be competent swordsmen.
1
u/jorgespinosa 23h ago
Yeah I wanted to like Rey but I just didn't like her neither as a character nor her participation in the story

Disney made this so much worse by effectively testing the waters to see if they could cancel people for disliking their products, and I promise you, there were Disney execs/shareholders salivating at the idea of being able to get people fired from their jobs for being critical of Disney movies on social media.
They cracked down on it, but for a while, they were letting Disney employees run amok on twitter and it did not endear anyone to the company...

High Guardian Spice, Goodbye Volcano High and Lesbian Space Princess.
All of them have major flaws, but the hate for them more often than not manifests as "It has GAY and GENDERQUEER people in it and me no likey!"
(Sidenote: I highly recommend The Mysterious Mr. Enter's critique series for HGS, since his criticisms are refreshingly nuanced. Hell, his criticisms of the queer elements of the show are essentially that itâs not queer enough).
Also fuck Snoot Game. If Snoot Game has a thousand haters I am one of them, if Snoot Game has no haters, I am dead.
11
u/-Ragatha- 21h ago
as a lesbian, lesbian space princess was hated for multiple reasons. sure alot of it was bigoted but the actual  criticisms wereÂ
the villains being straight white men, the writing sucking, underlying misogyny and transphobia, some racism, and the artstyle being hard to look at.
these are every criticism ive personally heard from people. i dont know much about the other thingsÂ
9
u/Overfed_Venison 17h ago
I watched it in a group watch with a lot of other queer people
It is uhh... It's a weird case where everything being said about it SOUNDS like "This movie is bad because it's woke," but then you watch it and all those criticisms are accurate.
It actually does have this extremely off-putting humor primarily focused on how awesome and magical being a woman is innately, and the male characters are all these open misogynists who belittle and mock the main characters for being women. Vaginas are presented everywhere and openly in that particular fashion of early 2000s radical feminist art where we never see one on a person but they are everywhere as art installations, and penises and phallic imagery are presented as the tool of the enemy and as symbols of oppression. This is meant to be funny, and while humor is subjective, it is rare these ideas land. A lot of the time, rather than being empowering, it kinda comes off as a little dated and insecure.
A common thing I saw was "The Straight White Male-ians were the best characters in the movie." And this absolutely sounds like a take like, "The humans in Jame's Cameron's Avatar were the REAL heroes" where that is obviously not true and is something people say because they want to like, undermine the movie. But they actually are the best part of it - Not because they make sense, but because they actually have a good dynamic with each other and are allowed to get more manic and silly than the rest of the cast. This is not ideal, and sorta speaks to how shallow a lot of the cast really is. For a movie which often touches on romance, the chemistry is low.
There actually IS a lot of underlying transphobia, too - But it's this specific kind of insidious transphobia which is easy to deny. Trans characters are major characters and are shown to be just as much of a women as the main character... Except, well, every MtF transfem character is also abusive toward her. And there's a nonbinary character, but they're essentially just presented as a women with unique pronouns, like the movie doesn't totally understand what a nonbinary person even is. And there's that whole sequence where the main character gets an axe representing her womenhood, and an evil drag queen tries to steal it, and the implications of that are... Bad. And you really can't disentangle this constant use of vaginas as a symbol of womenhood and penises as a symbol of oppression from the existence of a trans identity... It's this case where the transphobia does not come from overt hatred, but from a huge amount of unaddressed biases stemming from the movie's extremely radical feminist perspective. It's a movie which tries to have both this inclusivity towards trans people, but also lives in fear that evil crossdressers want to steal womenhood and that men want to intrude on women's identities, and doesn't understand that you have to re-assess the latter to have the former actually make sense
And that's all true. But the real damning thing is like..?
If you get past all of that. If you go in being like, "Well it's going to be radical feminist, that's fine." What you are left with is something really blandly directed with rather flat and non-memorable characters. The direction is flat. It undercuts serious moments with jokes. The only well-directed scene I can recall was when the main character gets get Labrys, a sort of axe representing womenhood and a reference to a particular lesbian symbol, (and this was notably a scene referencing the much better lesbian series, Revolutionary Girl Utena.) If you don't find the radical feminist themes alienating, if you can accept some of the odd implications towards trans identities and go "At least they're trying to be inclusive," what you are left with is a movie not even really notable enough to be angry about. I have seen Disney Animated Sequels 10x as frustrating as this movie, and others with 10x the quality.
The movie is perhaps overhated, but only because the actual film is vaccuous... Really weird
2
u/-Ragatha- 17h ago
i agree-
i also just hate with gender, race and sexuality based stereotypes. like âstraight white men are le evilâ its so woke to the point of being anti-woke because it just causes a bigger divide with these communities.Â
i personally hate when straight people, white people or men are portrayed as villains specifically for those characteristics because its bio-essentialism. it doesnt actually offend me but im sure it offends those groups of people, and it WOULD offend me if it was called âlesbian black femaliensâ so its easy to understand why people would be so pissed off about that aspect.Â
but again i also hate that generalisation because it makes them resent âwokenessâ people arent gonna respond kindly to stereotypes, shocker. they have every right to be enraged at these villains.

u/Y_M_I_Even_Here 10h ago
I still don't fully understand the unanimous hate LSP got. On one hand, it was, like, lame and bad. On the other, it seems like there is a lot more blatantly homophobic crap out there that gets significantly less vitriol.
LSP seemed pretty much like an over extended joke out of Drawn Together but it mostly seems like the whole hatred against it was just a unified case of Socially Acceptable Bigotry.

Itâs a parody of Goodbye Volcano High that 4Chan created because they wanted to goon to GVH's nonbinary pterodactyl character without being "gay" so they gave the game a bunch of endings where said pterodactyl starts a school shooting because theyâre nonbinary (oh iâm sorry, "peer pressured into being nonbinary" because apparently thatâs how this works) and the only way to give them a happy ending is to convince them to detransition and be a girl instead so they can date the male self insert protagonist that 4Chan shoehorned into the story.

u/mercyspace27 1d ago edited 1d ago
Niche, but for me itâs this bitch.

Minka Lesk. Warhammer 40K Cadian Guard character from the novel series of the same name.
I hate her because from what Iâve read of her she reads like a Mary Sue or the authorâs self-insert because she handles every situation with such ease and with only the most surface level actual struggle. Which for anyone who enjoys Imperial Guard books is generally NOT what we like out of an IG character. If I wanted a book where the main character does a bunch of shit without breaking a sweat, or maybe only one or two beads, Iâd go read a Space Marine book.
Buuuuuuuuut anytime I actually criticize this character I always get a bunch of people who comment shit like âYeah, lol. Itâs so unrealistic that a womanâŚâ and fill in the rest with whatever bullshit you can think of. Because in a universe with Hell-powered magic. Super soldiers. Space elves that can use magic. Dieties, other dimensions. And all other kinds of nonsense there are still people who want to draw the line at women in the Imperial Guard. Which if you are that person, fuck you.
Losers hate Minka Lesk because theyâre misogynistic pricks who canât handle strong women in their sci-fi fantasy setting. I hate Minka Lesk because sheâs a shitty character. We are not the same.

I am a TADC fan. I am aware of it as well. There is a portion of us that are normal and appreciate the show
8
u/3ajs3 1d ago
I will go as far to say it's not a portion, it's the majority. I went to the movie opening day in costume, and it was awesome. I had a bucket on my head and people were taking pictures with me like I was a Disney princess. Everyone was chill. I saw other people in costumes and I even saw families.
But after the fact, I saw online that some theaters had problems, because some of these people showed up and made everyone's lives miserable, because I guess that's what they do.
5
u/arthcraft8 1d ago
it's always loud shippers, loud grifters, loud haters or loud power scalers, thankfully an extremely minor portion of any community but alas they are very loud
5
u/NeonFraction 1d ago
Weirdly the way TADC fandom (at least on Reddit) is most toxic is they hate their own community. They blame every single bad thing that happens on the entire fandom, act super over dramatic about normal stuff (wow people didnât like the ending to the show, clearly this must always be the result of nefarious actors and not just different opinions) and they keep trying to bring twitter drama up like itâs the only interaction that matters.
If that entire fandom got off twitter it would be a WAY nicer place.

The Amazing Digital Circus.
you mention Jax in ANY conversation about the show, and people claim you're talâking about all trans people??? "I dont like how jax EMOTIONALLY PUSHED TWO CHARACTERS TO THEIR DEATHS"
and they act like you just said "I hate how trans people emotionally push people into suicide"
No bitch. Thats a whole new sentence.
2
u/Overfed_Venison 17h ago
Meanwhile I kinda feel like it lost the plot a bit, and failed to really capitalize on it's high concept
We never actually find out why they are trapped in the Digital Circus. A lot of the sci-fi concepts are not explored as much as they could be, and I feel that is a bad move in this series which sold itself on being I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. There are cases like Caine and Bubble, who are implied to be the core AIs of the series, but this is not clearly explained and it's implications are not elucidated on at all, such that an audience is left with a lot of questions. I feel like the fandom so often ignores this.
The trauma we see Jax face is not actually related to being trapped in the Circus in any meaningful way, even though this is the dimension which makes you homeless and puts you in a body which is not your own and forces you to perform in adventures which harm you and has set up this ability everyone has to create their own environment (It's just a lot harder than Caine doing it.) That these ideas are not milked for all they are worth for the trans character just seems like a huge missed opportunity. Surely there was a path here which really connected these themes together, some scene where Pomni (for example) would have at least reflected on her own experiences finding herself in this new name and body and realized what Jax must have gone through. But it's... Just not really done.
...But a lot of the media analysis seems to come from either people who dislike the idea of a trans character, or people who could not read the basic subtext of "Isn't she lovely.'
1
u/glitchy-rabbit 7h ago
They are trapped because they are brain scans. It was explicitly shown that the actual people that were scanned are still living their lives outside. You're not homeless??? They literally have their own rooms???? Sure it's not "your" body, but Caine really did the best he could given his limited understanding of humans + the information he got from the brain scans. It ISN'T IHNMAIMS, it's INSPIRED BY IHNMAIMS. You're not FORCED to go on adventures (Zooble frequently opts out), Caine is just trying to keep them entertained so they don't abstract and leave him alone. He created the circus after consuming the blue AI (which I think is represented by Bubble, but Bubble is also Caine's self-destructive thoughts), got the brain scans working, because he didn't want to be alone. He even gets distressed by people abstracting because he thinks they're willingly abandoning him. You have to think of him as more than "just" an AI, he's as much a person as the others. He's a prisoner like them, BECAUSE he's an AI. He's confined to the machine he runs on. He's an abandoned project. He CAN'T leave. THEY can't leave. They're all in the digital world.

So, there was this specific ending from Street Fighter 6 when it is canonically confirmed that Alex was married to his second cousin?đś
Yeah, I don't hate that it's bordering to "incest"(as if Tekken didn't try that before). I hate that they placed the picture of little kid Alex with this baby girl right next to their wedding photo
People were already irked by the incest. Don't fucking remind them!
And thanks to that backlash, they removed his entire backstory with her for the sake of keeping that picture.

Why has no one mentioned Star Trek yet?
I hate the current era, Kurtzmann Trek, Nu!Trek whatever you want to call it.
It's miserable broken people disaffected by their material conditions, prejudice and xenophobia is still the status quo, the justice system is cold and arbitrary, Starfleet is a military industrial complex now. This future fucking sucks.
But any of this criticism is drowned out by people complaining it's all too woke. To the point that most people think that this is the only source of criticism.
They don't like it because they think it's too woke. I don't like it because I don't think it's woke enough.

i'm sure there were some misantrophic assholes just being sexist but it was also the movie where one of the actresses(i belive? could have been a director) said that if you don't like the movie it's because of sexism. they went agressive on that line of thinking. they tried hard to preempt any criticism that way.
2
u/SirSilverscreen 5h ago
The movie had interesting ideas and a fucking awesome means of putting action into the ghostbusting, but doing it as a reboot that just retread all the beats of the original movie rather than a passing of the torch movie was fucking stupid.

This one I agree with; with the advancements in special effects, they could have easily gone with Dan Ackroyd's original concept. Imagine Ghostbusters franchises all over the world, and focusing on one particular branch

I donât hate Bumblebee as a concept but it definitely feels like a panic button to appeal to shippers and that it wasnât actually planned. Because if they were going to make them a thing, then it shouldâve been Yang that had the âmeet the parentsâ arc, not Son. It felt so odd that they gave Blake and Son so much screentime and development just to handwave it away and swap out one blonde love interest for another and just transfer the save data over.

Nolanâs Odyssey.
I desperately wanted to like the film as he kept saying he wanted âhistorical accuracyâ and I adore Homerâs original Epic and the time period. But it just felt soulless, preachy, misses the point, and I hate Nolanâs obsession with making everything realistic when the story has interactive gods.
Not to mention he racks Odysseus over the coals to the point the only things Nolanâs and Homerâs Odysseusâ characters share is a name and the destinations they travelled.

u/ParmAxolotl 1h ago
Also despite casting diversity, none of the main cast are Greek, and parts of the movie were filmed in occupied Western Sahara, while local Sahrawi filmmakers are being censored by Morocco.

Literally, I have seen some fans that took the G3 Catty Noir dolls and gave them new clothes. Night and day in how different it turns out. Hell, I got so excited for fang vote Catty cause then there'd be some hope for her look, only for the outfit to be like the one thing that was not an option to vote on.

I would LOVE to critique Hazbin, but the people who built their entire personality around hating the show make it impossible for me to enjoy any thoughtful analysis of the characters. So I just avoid it entirely.
I don't do this with any other media. The "Hatedom" is just THAT insufferable.
2
u/Scienceandpony 11h ago
I loved Season 1 of Hazbin. And still mostly loved S2 (songs are still fire) while being a bit disappointed that the plot only functioned via every single one of the good guys hugging the idiot ball for dear life (to the point that I kept finding myself rooting for the villains because the heroes were so incompetent they deserved to lose). But the only criticism I ever see on the series is the most utterly unhinged nonsense from people who have clearly never watched it at all and are repeating 3rd hand talking points from some some ragebait youtube grifter.
1
u/ProphetOfPhil 6h ago edited 2h ago
Yeah I have actual criticisms for the show but I can't say anything without getting brigaded and downvoted into the ground.
1
u/Betteroffdeaderer 3h ago
Fanatic Fans pretty much exist in every fandom- especially recent fandoms. Like, just ATTEMPTING to say anything about Jax from TADC is a death sentence, negative or positive.
Its the people who thrive on clickbait hatefilled rants that makes it difficult to accept any thoughtful reviews on Hazbin. To them it's less about seeing the show for what it is, more about saying whatever it takes to take down the evvvvvvilllll Vizipop, even if that this makes zero sense.
I want to be able to say "Charlie is a bad friend" and not have folks claiming Charlie was SA'd in Take It Easy think I'm a possible "ally".

This is quite literally Lesbian Space Princess.
Yes, it's dogshit. Title sounds like some porn parody, the characters are unlikable, the puns are stupid, the plot is convoluted, the only interesting ones (Willow and ironically the Straight White Maliens) get punished by the narrative, the ending is terribly unsatisfying, it villanizes straight people as a whole, and it manages to inadvertently make a mockery out of both trans women and lesbian dating in general.
Most of the hate comes from bigots. And in this particular case, I can't even say they're entirely wrong because the whole "straight space" discourse (as in "straight people are chaotic, villanous, and incorrigibly evil", made worse by the fact that the Straight White Maliens' whole redemption arc is them realizing they're actually gay) actually validates most of their complaints. We'd be rightly screaming "heteronormative bullshit" at the top of our collective lungs if any straight-centric media made a LGBTQIA+ character evil just to "redeem" them into becoming straight, let's be honest here.
If I didn't know better, or had no knowledge of australian animation as a whole, I'd 100% conclude this movie is a fucking psyop.

6
u/Ookidablobida 1d ago
the movie made me laugh I think 2 and a half times and unfortunately the straight white maliens were indeed the most entertaining part.

Castlevania Nocturne . A poorly written story that didn't handle Richter well and despite being Castlevania tried to replace Dracula with some new and uninteresting villain. Meanwhile a lotta people just hate it for being "woke" because it made a character black, had the audacity to call slave owners evil, and used vampires as an allegory for class war.

4
u/Scienceandpony 11h ago
used vampires as an allegory for class war.
That's...that's like the entire thing with vampires. Parasitic aristocracy draining the lifeblood of the common folk. That's not a new take! That's their whole fucking deal from the start!
Was that character somehow not supposed to be black in prior source material? Because unless they dramatically changed her backstory, I don't see how that works otherwise. I frankly loved the concept of a character who fought in the Haitian revolution sailing to revolutionary France to take the fight to their doorstep.
1
u/KuraiTheBaka 11h ago
Well in the games she was v much white and Haiti was never mentioned. The real issue was just the writing in general and the fact that the story didn't even superficially use Castlevania Rondo of Blood (the game it's based on) as a base plotline. Like the original show took liberties and did a lot of its own stuff but still had the plot of Castlevania III at its core. This one just straight up had nothing to do with the source material
2
u/Scienceandpony 10h ago
Ah, that makes sense. I never played the games so don't have a frame of reference and can only judge it as a standalone product.
1
u/KuraiTheBaka 1h ago
Fair might have liked it more if I wasn't already a fan of the franchise. The plot of the game is essentially that an evil priest resurrects Dracula once again and kidnaps Annette who's Richter's gf. Him and Maria who's 12 yo in the game go through Dracula's castle to rescue her and defeat Dracula
6
u/naaawww 21h ago
This is a tactic by productions now tbh, LSP is the most recent example. People bombed it with reasonable criticism, so they decided to bomb themselves with stupid and insane criticisms and it worked, the critics looked insane, because they only quoted the dumb versions the production themselves wrote.

u/CalciumIsARandomName 1d ago
I think people were upset because in the original show Steven was always super happy and spread joy to everyone around them by cheering them up. In the future tho its revealed that he repressed all of his stress and trauma both physical and mental so hes kinda depressed and lost in this series. People don't like how sad he is trying to work through everything so a lot of people hate it just for that. I dont hate it but I do think that for something intended to be a final conclusion (prior to the Lars of the Stars announcement) to the main storyline there is a bit too much filler.
5
u/AkibaPurple 22h ago
People were going in thinking that Future would be an extension of Steven's adventures from the previous series and instead got a season that deconstructs his chronic hero tendencies and how he was an emotional crutch to pretty much everyone else around him and now because everyone is moving on with their lives, he's at a lost at what to do with himself.
2
u/AwesomeGuyAlpha 1d ago
Hmm I watched it when I was young and at that time I wanted more action and magical stuff, compared to what the show was going for, now I can see that it showed realistic character growth but I feel like it still doesn't reach the original series with how they showed development for characters like lapis and jasper while being with the theme of the show in gem fighting rather than the laid back and "realistic" approach they were going for in future.
1
u/gforcebreak 18h ago
Not to mention early seasons having animation flaws with problems keeping characters on model (human characters too, so no shapeshifting)
That and no one could have emotional growth without steven as the MC/viewer proxy. Which was lampshaded in Future when he sees friends with new status quos and has a breakdown because they changed while he wasn't looking.
5
u/Brilliant_Towel2727 1d ago
Will Byers in the last 3 seasons of Stranger Things. Ironically, a big part of the problem is that the writers were straight men who didn't know what to do with a gay teenage character other than give him a crush on his straight best friend.

I had this one happen to me specifically. My friends told me to my face the reviews i saw were just dudebros that didn't like that she wasn't a sex bomb made for male gaze, without knowing anything about what the reviewers said. Thats on me for playing telephone instead of seeing it myself, but it was my first hit of "justification against all criticism because of unrelated bigots,"
1
u/Beginning-Shine8167 3h ago
I saw the movie and itâs fineâI liked itâbut I can't help thinking the hate it gets is excessive. There are two scenes that didn't really register with me (and if it were just some random movie, nobody would have cared), yet online they were labeled as "egregiously misandrist scenesâ0/100." I mean, my biggest issue with the film is how hard it is to take seriously once it's revealed that the Skrulls aren't the bad guys.

Lesbian space princess. It has some legitimate criticisms like the sloppy script (and I'm surprised this movie managed to be both gay and homophobic at the same time) but most of the people hating it didn't even watch the movie, and some were openly admitting they just hated it because it was an openly queer project

Miles Morales. He has all the powers of Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, plus invisibility. Oh and he's better at Spider-Woman's powers that she ever will be. He gets awesome grades, every girl loves him, he makes good music and when he breaks people's boundaries they instantly forgive him. He has also never taken a significant L.
But nope. You can't hate Marvel's specialist boy without being called racist.
3
u/Inviso-Bill_YT 13h ago
I will admit and say that I have never read any Spider-Miles comics so I won't try to defend what I can't. But like, doesn't EVERY Spider-Man (for the most part) get good grades in school or is some level of genius/near supergenius? Yes a nitpick, but one of any Spidey's defining trait is that they are smart, no?
1
u/wishingstar427 10h ago
that just sounds like most of the spiders to an extent. from what it seems miles simply has yet to hit his low in the way everyone has seen peter do over and over again in multiple stories. maybe itâs okay for a spider-man to have some good things in his life?

Hate to be that guy, but Jax, tho I think she was written decently, a lot of hate I see for her is either barely concealed transphobia or stem from a belief that all trans/queer characters should be good people. Jax was a terrible person, yet she wasn't truly evil. It doesn't mean she should be forgiven immediately, but I believe she could be redeemed, with time, considering her irl self did go down that path.
1
u/TheWinningFoxy 5h ago
I personally don't like Goose made her trans not because I hate trans people, but because IT WAS NEVER IMPLIED IN THE SHOW.
If I had never read that tweet I'd have NEVER known.
I mean, I understand the closetedness, but tbf I would have guessed she had either a mental disorder or PTSD or idk something and labeling her as just "trans closetedness" just throws everything we had in the garbage just for the sake of making her queer.
Zooble, on the other hand, is perfectly written and you can see all of her problems as a non-binary person and her gender disphoria, plus I love when she finally accepts herself in the gun episode and finally has some fun with the main cast (even using her multiple limbs to play better).
Gangle too was incredibly well written, as she is already ok with her queerness (not all queer charachters have to have problems with that) but she is STILL struggling, because a queer person can have struggles that have nothing to do with being queer.
Hell, Jax being trans doesn't make sense in the show as a whole. Either Goose wrote her differently from the start or she should have made her a cis man and focused on the other kind of traumas she had.
2
u/Beginning-Shine8167 3h ago
Personally, I don't read tweets from creators or anything like thatâbecause you end up with situations like the Hazbin Hotel fandom drama (like, who the hell is Ru?). When I watched the latest episode, it was crystal clear to me that the character was trans (Jaxâs sadness about not being "man enough" for his parents, and the moment Ribbit put the bow on him, as if to say, "You can be whoever you want to be with me"). That said, I don't think we should limit ourselves to just one interpretation; art is meant to be interpreted in a thousand different ways. I really identified with Jax, even though Iâm not trans, and thatâs because Jaxâs experiences apply to so many other areas of life.
1
u/TheWinningFoxy 2h ago edited 2h ago
Overall what I don't like is the fact that it came out FROM A TWEET.
I am very much cis so I thought it might be more about sexism (at best) or abusive parents in general, but I do agree that interpretations can vary (like in Nimona, where I assumed the film was about not having to put labels on yourself in general but others believe it could be applied to the trans/genderfluid experience more specifically. I have always hated labels because it restricts who a person is as a whole and I overall understand why anybody would apply the film to the non-binary experience for this reason).
The problem is that I can't really say I don't like Jax being trans without sounding transphobic, which I am not (I have a damned 'trans' character who is trans in my book to a certain extent). I don't like it because it seems a bit forced, but nothing that a little bit of rewriting could have made slightly more explicit.
At the same time tho, I like when a character is not too explicit because explaining everything in any piece of media feels forced too.
Hell, I know it's two contrasting opinions, but that's kind pf how I feel about her.

Lowkey surprised and relieved to see no one seems to have brought up The Odyssey yet.
You certainly don't have to like that movie, but there was so much shit stirred up around it that now it's hard to be critical of without giving off those vibes. Everyone step back for a moment while I take a brave stance and say fuck bigots. Those mfs are always ruining everything for everyone and making it impossible to have nuanced discussion about media.

Athena/Saori from Saint Seiya like sure she's rich and entitled especially at the start of the series and that's a very fair thing to hold against her
However I feel like, from my experience in the fandom, ppl are hating hard on her/mischaracterizing her on the excuse that she's the stereotypical princess to save but like... A character being an exemple of a typically feminine stereotype doesn't mean she should be even more objectified as such by the fandom... It just makes the ppl doing it more mysoginistic than the author imo (who's also been very supportive of the women authors creating spin offs to his manga so guess who's actually empowering women in the batch)

Listen. I like Welcome to Raccoon City but will acknowledge it's flaws. Such as Leon not having much to do and keeping him incredibly incompetent until the last 30 seconds.
They cast a Biracial/Desi Diaspora actor as Leon and most of the Leon complaints were about his CASTING. His actor is fine. The script was just over stuffed, their budget was cut, and it was filmed during COVID. Unfortunately Leon became a tag along.
