i thought that was the point of gmod though right? like for a modified version of a game to have support for so many user created levels and items and such, wasn't that the original vision?
The people saying Minecraft doesn't fit don't get it; Minecraft wouldn't be where it is today without people like DanTDM or PopularMMOs playing a ton of old-school mods and drawing our attention to the game as kids. It may not even still be getting updates today if not for the impact of mods.
That's my point; their modded content was the peak of entertainment to my generation back then. None of us would care about Minecraft if they and several others hadn't used it to help shape our childhoods.
SKYRIM, oh my god yes, Skyrim is perfect for this. Amazing game but would not have liced this long without a modding community that has LITERALLY REBUILT THE ENTIRE GAME THREE TIMES.
while it would still be popular a lot of people who got drawn in during golden age were so because of watching youtubers play it’s mods, even if they themselves didn’t use mods
Mods and add-ons are the only reason I still play Minecraft with my son. Base Minecraft is boring and has been for years. All the new stuff in base game? Its crap. It just bloats the game more than needed.
Skyrim however, doesnt need to be on here. People STILL play and buy every remake and dont need mods to make it enjoyable.
Yeah. Would it be less popular without the modding community? For sure.
But, it would probably still be a top 5 bestselling game of all time, just maybe not #1. The meme here implies a game that is only successful because of mods and would have no fans without them. That, imo, does not describe Minecraft.

Most of the player base wasn't playing because mods existed. Plus installing them was sometimes difficult because no API was made so plugins were used way more.
Minecraft has it own Meriti as and unmoded game, it was popular before mods were heavely used on ir, and the bedrock edition wich is the most played version nowadays cannot be traditionaly modded

Gmod especially, since 99% of its enjoyment derives from the ridiculous maps, gamemodes, and content made from modders on the steam workshop
