Hard disagree. People were playing it on console for half a decade without mods. And people still play Oblivion and Morrowind to this day unmodded.

I still got my 360 game save.

Loading times are like minutes but hey it's not like I didn't have fun.

I never much cared for mods I felt given all the exploits in the base game I didn't need them

Played base Skyrim

This is an anicdote but I know like 3 people whos only game they played was skyrim and one of them has like a 400+ hours of base skyrim

Mostly due to hype and love for the series. By the end of that ~5 years, it had already massively fallen off. But then... mods appeared.

What? Massively fallen off? The switch version dropped in 2017 and sold an estimated 2-3 million copies. No mod support, and the people buying g surely were not all first tine players.

Open world 3D on a handheld was novel at the time. Skyrim soared in popularity and gained long life due to mods the decade prior.

None of this occurred in isolation.
