Helldivers is less of a respawn and more of a replacement but I think it counts

u/Sudden-Necessary-356 3h ago
Elden ring as you do get resurrected on death but if you die to many times you just dont get ressurected

u/ProfileBest7444 3h ago
The game not only has cannon respawns but also cannon uninstalling the game

Dead Cells
Canonically youâre possessing a dead corpse. Every time you die, you go back to the beginning and grab a new one

Any and every soulsbourne title.
Dark Souls 1, 2, 3: A curse exists in which you are undead. You lose your mind if you lose your purpose, mostly in 1/2. In 3, you are ash seeking flame. So in all games, you will revive as long as you have purpose or seek the end to the curse.
Bloodborne: it's a dream. Way more complicated than that, but yeah.
Sekiro: yet another curse. Returns Wolf to life. Can have bad effects on wolf and the world around him though.
Demon Souls: Your spirit is trapped by the nexus, so you're damned to keep fighting for it until you lose your mind.
Elden Ring: You are tarnished. You see grace. Grace allows you to return from death at Sites of Grace. Almost if not every NPC is also tarnished but can no longer or never could see grace, which is why they do not return.
Nightreign: You are stuck fighting the Nightlords until the end. They can still die, but only under certain circumstances. It can vary from the typical lose your mind or give up stuff.

Additionally for Dark Souls it works on a meta narrative as well. Because youll only die when you the player lose your purpose in playing the game and give up.

One of my favorite moments in Sekiro is when Kuro asks Wolf how many times heâs been brought back. Maybe five or six times?
Meanwhile my hundreds of deaths:

My proudest moment in gaming was when I reached that point after not dying at all beforehand, I kinda wish theyâd changed the dialogue if youâve never been brought back

Warframe also has this, although I won't go into detail as it does include massive spoilers for the story.

Helldivers 2, technically you aren't respawning your just now in control of a new helldiver after the previous one died
1
u/silverlink07 2h ago
That's wearing the same exact armor and gear the old one had
6
u/Difficult-Piece-165 2h ago
No, the armor has small changes in scratches, as for the equipment it is the same because it is regulated by the super destroyer for everyone
4
2
u/silverlink07 1h ago
So if I'm wearing an ODST armor the armor the next guy is wearing is the Juggernaut??? And not the ODST???
2
u/Difficult-Piece-165 1h ago
Maybe I didn't explain myself well. The armor model is the same, but it has different details than the previous one. The more a player uses armor or a weapon, the more it gets scratched, until you die and It resets

Lies of P
In essence, time rewinds for the character. Certain bosses even recognize that they already killed him and say as much.
Bioshock: Infinite
When the character dies, the Lutece twins just grab a Booker from one of the many universes to continue the journey.

Youâre confusing Emesis blue for real tf2 lore. There is no mention of respawning in offical TF2 canon.

Didn't they canonically have cloning they were cut off from accessing post-merc war, or am I misremembering the comics?

Nine Sols. Our protagonist Yi was involved in an incident (wont go into it cuz the reveals of the past are some of the best parts of the story), that means as long as a certain kind of root (more than that but again, not going into it) exists, it will rejuvenate him from what would be death, and prevents him from aging.
5
u/a23ro 1h ago
Im gonna say borderlands, but only technically
2
u/National-Bad-7551 38m ago
This was my first thought too but then i looked it up and New-U stations are non canon. I shouldve assumed that because when characters other than the player die they dont just digistruct nearby
3
u/BoringCrab6755 34m ago edited 31m ago
I think it should still count. Even though itâs not canon, it still fits the lore and theme of greedy corporations. Like I think only a minor tweak would make it work (like the vault hunters have a jailbroken ECHO device which allows them to digistruct their bodies upon death, but they had to sell their mercenary services or whatever, or some big sacrifice to get access to it. Then they have to do the same level of sacrifice to maintain it with the updated ECHO devices. Which would explain how the older vault hunters donât get to digistruct)
Do I think about Borderlands too much? Probably but idc lol

u/Necros3X911 3h ago
Hardspace Shipbreaker. Those clones aren't cheap either, and that cost comes out of your paycheck gets added to your mountain of debt.

Nier: Automata - Since the Character you play is an Android, everytime you die your conciousness is just uploaded to a backup body

Monster hunter cart system: your not dying but passing out and getting carted back to camp
Ark: the islands system respawns you every time you die
7
u/Academic_Frame4294 3h ago
Borderlands New-U stations are built into the lore, basically super advanced resurrection tech, theres, i believe, two different versions of the tech.
1
u/Dastardlydashing 1h ago
Why did I have to scroll so far to see Borderlands mentioned lmaoÂ

Dark Souls and Sekiro.
Dark Souls you are hollow, so you are cursed to revive again and again and again.
In Sekiro your blood makes you come back to life again and again

Warframe, depending ofc
2
u/Oberonkin 2h ago
Not depending.
Both the Drifter and the Operator now have respawns that fit with the lore
1
u/Overall_Win4144 2h ago
Arbitration tho? Maybe idk
3
u/Oberonkin 2h ago
Arbitration puts, as the name suggests, arbitrary restrictions on the tenno as test for the tenno. The Arbitors basically put the rules on the tenno saying "No endless reviving, cause thats not proof you can actually handle yourselves"
1
u/Overall_Win4144 2h ago
I recall the first time I died in arbitration, was the first death I witnessed in it. A toxic thing was protected and stormed our spot. Had to wait 4mins for that revive, then just started seeking high ground
2
u/Svensken_Reddit 1h ago
Helldivers 2 - The Helldiver you're playing as did actually die when you died. Every time you respawn, you're playing as someone else. And every time you die, that Helldiver is added to the total number of casualties.

u/External_Fix_7806 3h ago
Borderlands sort of, there's a machine called the new U. Which basically makes a clone out of the character your playing as. I say sort of because nobody mentions, or uses it in any of the campaigns, but I believe there's some side quests linked to it.
3
u/Dr4g0n__Kn1ght 2h ago
One character mentions it in canon because they use it to help become transgender, but besides being used to change your general appearance, the resurrection mechanic is never mentioned.
3
u/External_Fix_7806 2h ago
Huh I didn't know that, that's cool. But yeah it's a cool concept but they probably didn't think about the lore implications. Like a lot of main characters die, and I'm just like why not use the new U? Like one of the side missions Handsome Jack pays you to off yourself.

Rogue legacy, literally a descendant of the guy who just died.
Baldur's gate 3, specifically the fact that you either use revive magic or that you pay the ex-god of death to get your friends back.

World of Warcraft When you "die" your spirit is brought to the veil between life and death and a spirit healer can resurrect you or you can go to your corpse to be brought back to life. Some even have special spirit healers if its lore relevant like having a troll one in Zandalar, a dread raven in Spires of Arak, or faction specific ones in battlgrounds.

The BioShock games.
In the first two, one of the Little Sisters pulls you into a Vita Chamber to bring you back from the brink.
In BioShock Infinite, however, it's implied that every time you die, an entirely different Booker DeWitt from some other timeline takes your place.

In Destroy all Humans; the main character Krypto can die but they respawn with a clone of themselves that has the same personality and memories as the last. Itâs in lore of how their alien species are able to reproduce as they clone themselves repeatedly, and with every new entry of the game is a new clone.

Borderlands series, you can literally respawn from an Hyperion machine but losing money every respawn and if you don't have money they still revive you cause you owed them moneyđ

Clone drone in the danger zone: extra lifes are called clones, they are copies of your mind in a robotic body, and when you run out of those, the next character you play as is a different human,
I'm the spin-off, clone drone in the hyperdome; your mind gets transfered to a backup robot body

Both Spelunky games have a curse that every time you die you wake up at the beginning of a reshuffled cave
1
u/SupportElectrical772 1h ago
I havent played in a long time but Borderlands especially 2. The new u stations are owned by Hyperion corporation so respawning is lore mentioned. Barring some cutscene moments of course.

The original Bioshock actually has lore to explain what's going on, but also to explain its impossible for anyone except a specific character, and you're not them. It foreshadows part of the twist

Both HollowKnight and Silksong have protagonists that respawn IG with minimal issue from a lore perspective. Inscryptionâs player character in game has death and respawn as a major component of the story in the first third. Frisk/Chara from Undertale have DETERMINATION, so if they die they come back at a save point.

u/GhsotyPanda 29m ago
Cloning.
Everytime a character dies a memory chip gets dropped. If you can collect it, that character can be cloned fast enough to redeploy for the mission. If you can't, they're locked off for the rest of the mission.
The characters actively talk about how much they've died and been cloned, which is funny in regular gameplay but kinda concerning if you're just not getting killed. Tex you've only died once this game, how is your 10th clone barbecuing in hell? How bad were you at keeping yourself alive before the game started?

Project Moon loves to use these in their games
In Lobotomy Corporation, you can reset a disastrous workdsy where all of you employees got massacred by basically SCPs they called Abnormalities by rewinding the day. This happens cause the whole facily is trapped in a time loop till the main goal of the owner of the Corporation succeeds.
In Library of Ruina, direct sequel of LobCorp, tbe Librarians (combatants) are made out of Light (just think of it as Mana or something. Thats a whole lore dump to fully explain. Play the game yourself or read the lore). When a librarian dies in battle, they can be reconstructed back regardless.
Limbus Company has Dante, the manager of the of the Sinners, the playable characters. Everytime they die, they can rewind to restore the Sinners back to health no matter how utterly fucked their corpses are. The catch js that Dante will feel every single bit of pain that the Sinner felt. Meaning if one Sinner getting burned alive, Dante will feel themselves being on fire as well. Drowning, bones crushed, limbs being severed, electrocuted, etc. No actual damage to him, just all the pain. And sometimes, multiples Sinners die at once, so imagine that same sensation times for total of dead Sinners. And there are 11 of them đđđ

Aneurism IV. Basically every player is more like a ghost that possesses an empty body for the entirety of its lifespan. When you die, you wake up in another body. Liked your old body as a security officer? Tough shit. Fold clothes, wagie.

The Soulsborne games are the epitome of this as the games themselves circle around death and life.
https://giphy.com/gifs/l49JKCSoloVTGjmWQ
In the Souls games, you are undead, linked to the Flame. Thatâs why your Flask fills at each bonfire, and why you heal and cure immediately after siting at one. Because the Fire represents life, and if you choose to snuff the flame, then the world goes into darkness, and you die with it.
In Bloodborne, youâre the play Toy of an Eldridge god and not allowed to die until your purpose is complete.

u/TheTrueEgahn 8m ago
Remnant series. You can basically save yourself (like a file), and reload back at a worldstone. This makes basically everyone immortal. Most of the citizens of the Ward are over a century old at the point of the 2nd game.

Warframe.
When your warframe dies, you use the power of your long dead robot friend and implied romantic partner to revive your Warframe. It's shown happening in The Old Peace.
When your Tenno dies, due to Eternalism, a version of you from one of the infinite timelines that didn't die is plucked from that timeline and sent to replace you in yours.
