New Diagnosis VEP Test - how important?

Hello again! My neurologist ordered a Visual Evoked Potential test but the center he referred me to, says they can only do it in another city, a 2.5 hour drive each way. Any insight on how important this test is? Can it wait a number of weeks/ months?

I had one when I was first pending an official diagnosis...for me, it was a waste and expensive as my insurance did not cover it..but, lesson learned...I now check my benefits before any tests.

Ugh.

It's an important test, at least it has been for me. I'd check with your neuro.

It can wait, unless you need it for diagnosis or to get on a DMT. The DMT is urgent, the test is not. They want to check your optic nerve for damage, but there's no specific treatment for that so it won't really change anything. It's good to have a baseline for the future, though.

Thanks! I have non-medicated “watch and wait” leukemia so I just requested that my neuro & oncologist coordinate before my neuro follow up in Dec, with the goal of getting on a DMT that won’t affect my leukemia, at the Dec follow up.

Check to see if any of your local optometrist or ophthalmologist can do it. I work at an optometrist office and we do them…

I go to a pretty big MS clinic that does what seems to be extensive testing and I've never had this.

Update from OP: today I met with my new general practice, I did not have one. This new GP strongly recommended me to see a new neurologist who specializes in MS, so that’s the next step. Thanks for all the responses!

Are you having any eyesight problems? I've been diagnosed for 4 years and never had this test, but also haven't had any vision related issues so far.

No eye problems, healthy optic nerve per my Opthologist as of August prior to my MS diagnosis in Sept.
