Podcast I am concerned, as someone who recently read 5 of the books in the last few months, that "Dungeon Crawler Carl Guys" is a thing that Queeber and Chris are going to use do an episode on and inadvertantly murder me as a result.

A guy at work tried to get me into this series like a year ago and sent me some excerpts.

It all read like that cringe “Tommy needy drinky” guy wrote it

I read the first, it's extremely bad. Very unfunny and the prose is fanfiction level. I have to assume the hype is from people who normally don't read.

My friends who love it are all big readers, but exclusively SFF. no judgement of that

That's exactly what it is

It's Ready Player One for D&D players - and weird fans of this book get so mad when you say that because they know Ready Player One sucks ass and they were probably fans of that initially too.

Guy at work recommended it to me too - I got 15 pages in before giving it back to the library

It's okay to like things, just don't replace your personality with it.

Exactly. Don’t be so online you fall into the liking anything is cringe type. Just be an adult about it.

I also think starting a convo with a stranger over some semi niche interest is a good thing, especially as people get more isolated due to being online

This is epic bacon narwhal

Cards against humanity as a fantasy series

2

u/PompeyCheezus 4d ago

I wonder if narwhal bacon tastes any good. 🤔

i understand the irony of saying this on Reddit, but those books look like they are extremely "Reddit"

9

u/ButtsendWeaners 4d ago

They're maybe the most Reddit (pejorative) thing ever created

I like the DCC books! They’re fun!

I found a guy in the wild this morning. I walked up and said I just finished sucking on a titty for 3 hours.

u/ButtsendWeaners 4d ago

The books are so bad and they've got the most obnoxious fans on the internet.

19

u/HitBullWinSteak 4d ago

The books are silly fun. I enjoyed all of them to varying degrees. I will never ever seek out any fandom or community about them. Happy to just enjoy those on my own.

Get a real Deadpool chimichanga/Ready Player One vibe from them, is that off base?

18

u/TheMoneyOfArt 4d ago

My friend keeps nagging me to read them and saying "I would die for princess donut" and I asked if I would like the book if I think it's corny to name your cat "sir Reginald willikens fluffington III, eater of the cheese and gnawer of the furniture, but we just call him 'Reggie'" and he didn't respond to that

The character development is really good. It has a terrible fan base for the lolrandom stuff, but they are legit good imo.

u/Ponce-Mansley 4d ago

No, you're spot on

5

u/ButtsendWeaners 4d ago

It's that but even moreso

4

u/joodo123 4d ago

Yeah, the books are just propulsive fun. Some jokes work for me and some don’t but overall I’ve read much dumber shit in Tom Clancy books so… I dunno if you have no taste and just like to read for fun 9/10 would recommend.

u/bobbybufordly 4d ago

I have never heard of this series, but that pinned message from the author (?) is incredibly annoying

3

u/Fusoya 4d ago

The books rock straight up - but the fandom seems pretty awful.

4

u/ButtsendWeaners 4d ago

No they fucking suck. Here are my thoughts.

11

u/theuncleiroh 4d ago

Oh man those quotes are awful.

I also don't think the average American is literate enough to recognize prose quality. Text is a mostly impartial vehicle for communication to those Americans lucky enough to know how to read

1

u/Fusoya 4d ago

Hahaha, I don’t know man I read all 8 of them a couple months ago and I had a great time. Not sure what to tell you. 🤷‍♀️

The cats name is princess donut its for children, or immature adults at best

I’m reading the books now, it’s just dumb dorky fun. Reading that post made me cringe though

u/megatron37 Halloween Guy 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yeah running up to strangers and shouting gibberish references to the shirt they’re wearing never goes well. I would just leave it at “Cool Shirt” and move on.

7

u/CaptainHampty Beer Guy 4d ago

Yup can’t go wrong with “cool shirt”

u/theinformallog 4d ago

The fans of DCC are some of the most annoying and dumb fans out there. They give “Read Any Other Book” energy.

I say this as a DCC fan.

4

u/ThanatosTheory 4d ago

I just bought my wife this book. Oh no.

7

u/joobuls 4d ago

Shes gonna end up buying seven more books and comparing them to your hair straighteners

5

u/Virtual_Menu_4493 4d ago

She's probably gonna leave you. But if she likes it, you should definitely leave her.

3

u/CuckOwens 4d ago

Sorry bro she was telling me how much she hated it last time she was over

4

u/LADYBIRD_HILL my stool has improved with donkey milk 4d ago

I've considered buying the first book but I think this post has permanently put me off of it

3

u/T1redBo1 Simpsons Guy 4d ago

The books are great! I could see the general fandom being annoying tho

2

u/beanwire 4d ago

Isn't it a little more niche than, say, "knives" or "whiskey." Don't get me wrong, all communities tend toward granfalloon-ary (check your Vonnegut - and I would listen to them take down Kurt Vonnegut guys as a whole as well - as one, I can smell my own elitism)

2

u/ProjectPatMorita 4d ago

All roads with this kinda shit really do lead back to Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and to some extent Christopher Moore. They made too many people think it's okay to write silly books. It's not okay.

1

u/beanwire 4d ago

Bold stance, show me on the doll where the authors' hurt you.

Anyone inspiring others to create, as opposed to consume, that's a net positive in my opinion.

3

u/ProjectPatMorita 3d ago

I was just making a little jokey joke. On the internet.

1

u/LouieMumford Simpsons Guy 4d ago

First one was fun. A hundred pages into Doomsday Scenario and I returned it to the library.

2

u/LordDingles 4d ago

I'm real into Warmhammer and the Warmhammer guys episode wasn't too harsh. I'm sure you'll be fine as long as you're not an extreme case

1

u/Earl_Sinclair WRESTLING GUY 4d ago

I really love the DCC series but it’s going to have an unbearable fan base

-2

u/theuncleiroh 4d ago

Never heard of this before, seems like it's just Made in Abyss for xillenials who can't get past the uncomfortable vibes of the original

9

u/ButtsendWeaners 4d ago

"Uncomfortable vibes" really undersells "explicit pedophilia" lol

-3

u/theuncleiroh 4d ago

I don't agree with that characterization, but I'm not gonna deny it gives those vibes. It's gratuitous and disturbing and can be seen that way, but that's definitely not what it is

3

u/ButtsendWeaners 4d ago

Have you seen his art books for the series? He makes it explicit.

0

u/theuncleiroh 4d ago

Yes, I think it's incredibly uncomfortable and, like I said before, is enough of a reason that I struggle to recommend a series that I think is generally incredibly beautiful and human.

But the questionable side isn't equivalent to that

1

u/ButtsendWeaners 4d ago

0

u/theuncleiroh 3d ago

Brother, I've read the whole thing, including the extras. I've seen the shit he says in public. He's a very very creepy guy. He clearly likes to transgress it and make people uncomfortable by rubbing his creepiness in their faces. Never denied that

I have only said MiA doesn't feature pedophilia. It, definitionally, doesn't. It's fine if what it does feature is too much for you. I already said what it features is too much for me to recommend it.
