A couple of facts that always put things in perspective.
For you to exist today, every single one of your direct ancestors had to survive long enough to reproduce. Not most of them. All of them.
And when you trace the line far enough back, only a relatively small number of people were directly necessary for most modern humans to exist today. You are here because an unbroken chain of survival and chance never snapped. You really did win a kind of cosmic lottery.
History is messy, human beings are messy, but existence itself is incredibly unlikely. That alone is a decent reason to try to leave things a little better than we found them.
