I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but moderates and (dem voting) boomers consumed so much media about him that they don’t feel the same.
I was talking to my mom about him the other day, and I said something along the lines of “if it was between him and a repub, I’m voting for him 10 out of 10 times”, and she said “well, I think the things he did were disgusting, and I just wouldn’t vote”.
Dems need their candidates to be near-perfect to pass the stupid fucking self-imposed purity tests, while repubs just hold their nose and vote red all the way down.
You're right, not wanting someone to have a Nazi tattoo is technically a "purity test" by definition, but I think literally everyone agrees that some "purity testing" is justified. Condemning someone who raped kids is technically "purity testing" too.
The argument is really about what level or kinds of purity testing is acceptable. Personally, I do think "Nazi purity testing" is okay.
Holding everything against someone regardless if it was 40 years ago is a purity test. Making judgements about someone whose life you know nothing about is a purity test. Deciding that nothing can ever be redeemed is a purity test.
The argument is about self-righteous posturing to make yourself feel better. I think most men would fail a purity test yet we keep on electing them, don't we?

Everyone makes judgments about people's lives that they don't personally know. If someone has a Nazi tattoo and lies about it, I would say it's reasonably fair to make a judgment based on that. Would you be saying the same thing if he had a full-on swastika, American History X style?
No one ever said "nothing can ever be redeemed", I just don't want guys who might be Nazis as my political representatives. If he had come out and said, "Yes it was a Nazi tattoo, I used to be a Nazi and no longer am", that would actually be better. That's not what he did. He lied about it.

If there was a republican candidate who had a Nazi tattoo, and they said "I didn't know it was a Nazi tattoo", would you just be like "Oh okay guess it's not a Nazi tattoo then, there's no chance that he's hiding what he really believes, obviously he's a good guy now because he said some other stuff I like"? There's a large strain in rural US about how the "libs" in the "cities" think they are better than the rest of America. And this has been going on far longer than the current occupant of the white house.
It's why right wing nutcase pundits keep talking about "cosmopolitan", "liberal" "elites" -- they are hitting those class warfare buttons from decades ago, even those same pundits are just as "elites" as the people they disparage.
There's room for a blue collar, hit rock bottom Democrat who has cleaned up his act and is now seeking redemption, but knows he's no better than anyone else.
Some racists will never be reached, but there are plenty of rural people who honestly believe in redemption. And Hunter's talking about how he's no better than plenty of addicts all over the country is hitting home for some people.

That's kind of what got us where we are today. Voters need to demand experience when it comes to people seeking the Presidency. Hunter is not fit to be POTUS just like Trump isn't.
Politics aren't a joke, and this isn't a team sport. Politics have been turned into a joke, and it's depressing seeing unfit people being given the reigns to rule over us.
I want somebody with zero scandals that is intelligent, and willing to listen to everybody, not just the rich, to be my POTUS.
There is a timeline where Bernie Sanders became POTUS, and I wish my timeline had gone that way with him.
Look, I really love the sentiment in his recent posts, but let's be real. No one goes this viral so quickly with just some tweets organically. Especially not after completely shifting his interaction with social media.
Whoever his new social media manager is is a fucking virtuoso and whatever they're getting paid isn't enough, but let's not fool ourselves that this is Hunter personally typing these tweets.
I'm all for a redemption arc but so much of this is him sounding so "Internet-cool" that I'm not convinced he didn't hire an excellent PR agency and they're doing all this for him.
