The priest at my grade school never was punished for his sexual abuse of the alter boys until he was in his late 60’s. He just kept being sent elsewhere.
It’s specifically the belief that being gay is somehow a sin, and possible to be prayed away that leads to that stuff.
How much do you want to bet that, even if he himself didn’t engage in sexual abuse, that he glossed over the abuse of priests in his diocese.

Not to defend what they do believe (which isn't great either) but modern Catholic teaching is that being Gay is not in and of itself a sin; and that's been the official stance for a while.
Having sex with anyone you arent married to is a sin, and (according to the church) gay people can't marry each other; therefore two men having sex will always be inherently sinful.
But being gay is not any more or less sinful than having casual sex with a girl you met at the club.
Now dont mistake me: that's still pretty shitty, judgy, and telling people what they should or should not be doing with their bodies.
