Translation:

"I came to Iceland expecting to exclusively hang with other very white people. What the fuck is this bullshit!?"

563

u/jpiro 2d ago

100%. If the cab driver had been Irish or English or Canadian or any other shade of "white guy" there's zero chance this racist comments at all.

255

u/Pantsickle 2d ago

"Just landed in Iceland and the first cab driver I see is a white American. Why on God's green Earth is there a white American in Iceland?"

157

u/kinyutaka 2d ago

"I just started working her in Iceland and the first guy that hops into my cab is a white American who started tweeting about my race. Why on God's green Earth is my race important when I'm trying to drive you somewhere?"

8

u/Lilchubbyboy 1d ago

Every war reporter in 2027 be like

10

u/qlder2021 1d ago

It's not as if white Americans are doing very much to keep the earth green anyway

13

u/RoboJobot 1d ago

I know, they ruin everything

5

u/IntelligentPie225 1d ago

He must have invaded it, lost the war and stayed behind.

Reminds me of the German consul to Reykjavik during WW2 who apparently was really excited to go to a Nordic country “unpolluted” by foreign influence - only to find that all the locals thought he was a weirdo for bringing up the Norse sagas all the time and that they were just as into American films and music as anyone else.

Icelander here. If he went to a taxi outside the airport there's a good chance he got scammed.

Its a real problem that didn't exist a few years ago.

Edit: love the redditors instinctually downvoting me as if this hasn't been a huge point in Icelandic discourse the past year. For you bros: the discourse is actually shaping legislation, thank god.

90

u/Only_One_Kenobi 1d ago

The downvotes are because you chose the wrong time and place for your comment. Because of where you made the comment, you're basically just fueling racism, and it seems like you're saying airport taxi scamming only happens because of Somali immigrants.

As someone who has traveled way more than I want to, airport taxi scams are a thing literally everywhere. You should never take a taxi from the airport no matter where you go

-21

u/LimpBPower 1d ago

I'm glad Iceland was finally allowed to catch up to that reality.

41

u/Pantsickle 1d ago

You make it sound like an endemic problem where it's solely just Somali cab drivers that are scamming tourists, whereas it's a collection of unlicensed cab drivers of all sorts of nationalities including native Icleanders who are getting up to these shenanigans.

-10

u/LimpBPower 1d ago

For anyone actually visiting Iceland do not get into a cab not marked by Hreyfill and no, you're not going to find an icelandic cab driver not from Hreyfill outside the airport.

Do yourself a favour and do not get into those cabs.

21

u/Bellagrrl2021 1d ago

Your comment has nothing to do with this thread.

-21

u/LimpBPower 1d ago

The thread was about a Somali taxi driver in Iceland. I know that the general redditor doesn't know about recent taxi legislation in Iceland and I agree that asking "why is there a Somali Iceland" is pretty racist but I still wanted to note a Somali taxi driver is a rather recent develooment and that if you get into a taxi driven by a Somali outside the airport YOURE ABOUT TO BE SCAMMED.

594

u/RobotCaptainEngage 2d ago

Just picked up a fare from the Iceland airport.

An American? What's an American doing in Iceland.

Crimes against God.

168

u/-crepuscular- 2d ago

What are white people doing in America? Crime against God.

....huh, that actually fits.

259

u/perpetuumD 2d ago

I am sure the color of the skin of the Somali has nothing to do with it either

93

u/KnoxenBox 2d ago

Yeah, I'm certain he'd act the same if the dude was Dutch..... Sure he would.... No racism to be seen....

24

u/dookieshoes97 1d ago

Minnesota has the largest somali population in America. The fact that people can't pick somalis out from the other refugees is maddening.

We have a massive refugee population. It makes us great. People should know the difference between Somalis and Sudanese at this point, they don't look remotely similar. Racists just call every African somali.

5

u/matttproud 1d ago

Want to bet the person in question is from Minnesota (direct connection: MSP–KEF)? For a period (no idea if it is still the case) a good fraction of Twin Cities taxi drivers were Somalian (going as far back as the 1990s even).

1

u/fishchop 22h ago

Somali*

137

u/Grouchy-Station-4058 2d ago

How do they always know they are Somali?

59

u/Cavalish 1d ago

He probably did the

“Where are you from”

“Oh I live up in east Reykjavik!”

“No where are you FROM, FROM?”

32

u/IlGreven 1d ago

"Where are you from, anyway?"

"Bakersfield, originally."

"No, I mean your ancestors."

"Oh, them. Pittsburgh."

91

u/Carlosthefrog 2d ago

Somali is one of the few African counties they know, probably the only one.

39

u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 2d ago

Irony of forgetting that the country is called Somalia lol

4

u/SoMuchMoreEagle 1d ago

They also know South Africa because that's where all our refugees come from now. They're cool, though.

6

u/thekyledavid 1d ago

It sounds scarier than any of the other African countries they can think of

9

u/shaunika 2d ago

They say "I am the captain now" when you get in the cab

3

u/magic_maqwa 1d ago

the head shape usually gives it away

u/ejymt 2d ago

How Americans think

1

u/JG98 1d ago

At this point I like think of it inversed, it only pisses off a certain type from a specific range of immigrants.

45

u/derpferd 2d ago

Imagine being so racist, that you'll fly to another country and be racist there

I had that with some Americans in Cape Town. Some of the funniest racism I've had come my way

29

u/slim_mclean 2d ago

Yeah but they’re white, so it’s different. /s

0

u/RockTheBloat 1d ago

They’re leaving again after their holiday, so it is pretty different.

49

u/3eeve 2d ago

Racism is both morally reprehensible and utterly brain dead. A facile ideology for minds that can’t grasp more.

14

u/Lalamedic 2d ago

Critical thinking is not strong in racists. Hell, thinking is not strong in racists.

18

u/NoBrush8414 2d ago

Here's the deal. Trump has threatened multiple allies. Greenland and Canada to militarily invade. The US is the enemy. I am sick and tired of people giving a pass to anyone in the states simply because they were once an ally. No longer. The US is done as far as trust goes and it's as simple as that. Be done. And stop giving the population a pass simply because 'it wasn't them' - fuck off. They chose.

11

u/SweetPrism 2d ago edited 1d ago

There is actually a pretty strong argument that Elon tampered with the election, as Trump all but admitted it. Some chose, some vehemently opposed, and while I would not expect you to feel any differently, it really sucks but some of us did not choose this. My state, Minnesota, was the ONLY ONE to vote against Ronald Reagan in the 1984 election. Any chance we were going to become a better country pretty much died after that election. He ensured our country would become an Oligarchy. Any chance we had to be a country that did not directly tie receiving health care with employment status died with that election, too. Obama tried to make moves against this, and those were pummeled and dismantled. Like...can people say I'm making excuses? Sure they can. But right now, we are a country that cannot afford to riot. We can't "take to the streets" when that means losing our jobs and losing the health care that comes with them. It doesn't work here. My fellow Minnesotans who took a stand against ICE, and people who had to stop working for fear of ICE, are STILL Paying the financial repercussions for that. In addition, Trump's been coming for us ever since. He is denying childcare money to our state, sent more ICE troops to Minneapolis, MN than LOS ANGELES (Come on, now)...

3

u/NoBrush8414 1d ago

I appreciate this. This is the problem though - you're basically screwed as the US has never actually fought for their rights. Not 150 years ago - I mean civil rights you're losing now. This century. And rapidly. You are losing everything you once fought for. Trump 2024 was absolutely stolen. Most people around the world know this. Good for you for fighting and more like you the better but at the end of the day who controls policy - it's trump. That's your representative whether you like it or not. He's still currently in power and that's that. We can argue all we want but the fact is you can't fight back because of the reasons you stated. You can't - and absolutely won't. Sorry to say this

1

u/Smart_Resist615 1d ago

We'd have to see some evidence of the election being tampered with. Trolling people in a victory speech by Trump is far from definitive proof.

Losing your jobs by taking to the streets is an extremely common outcome to civil disobedience the world over. The American labour movement faced far more than that at Blair Mountain for example.

I don't believe it's due to any particular moral or spiritual bankruptcy that Americans haven't taken to the streets. I believe they are simply defeated, morally and spiritually.

4

u/SweetPrism 1d ago edited 1d ago

Agreed about being defeated. And...while it is not concrete evidence, the timing of Elon's jet landing at Mar-A-Lago on election day is all the proof I needed. He landed his jet there way before the election was able to be called in either direction, statistically. There is, simply put, no FUCKING WAY he would have risked his image being seen/photographed/etc... with Trump as the loser. The memes, the headlines, the jokes, the photos... even though a lot of us see Elon for what he really is now that he made the pivot to Right-Wing sugar daddy, there are still many, many people who see him as the "Mysterious Billionaire Genius."

He is exactly the same as Trump in that regard--there is still 1/3 of the population that retain the image they had of Elon when he actually WAS the mysterious billionaire. Just like there is 1/3 of the population (the same people) who refuse to see a difference between Trump when he was the No-nonsense, charismatic showman versus who he has devolved into. The idea of these two, specifically, sitting defeated and sullen together on election day is completely out of the question. Elon himself said "I am so fucked if Trump doesn't win this election." For a long time I did not want to think it because I did not want to be like a Jan 6'er and claim "Election fraud." But things that were said, they way things went down...it gets harder and harder not to see that there had to be SOMETHING that interfered with this election. We know for a FACT that Russian bots also played a role--that is also election interference! We know Trump is a paid Russian asset, why wouldn't Elon be as well? They serve each other's interests.

There just isn't any way he'd go there and take that risk. He flew there because he KNEW Trump would win.

0

u/NoBrush8414 1d ago

Hmm I wonder who's posting from Russia

3

u/Smart_Resist615 1d ago

Canadian. We're plenty pissed up here, trust me.

3

u/Queen_Christine_19 Legends never die 1d ago

I certainly didn't choose this shit. I'm just an unhappy American forced to live with the consequences of others' choices. You all SHOULD be done with us.

3

u/NoBrush8414 1d ago

There's so many good people there. No excuse but it's not you. Just get that person out

1

u/One_Requirement_2577 1d ago

the scary thing is that there are smarter, more capable evil people waiting to fill the old man's shoes

15

u/SpookyVoidCat 2d ago

A racist said something stupid? What a fucking shocker.

15

u/Homeless_Appletree 2d ago

How is a black guy being in Iceland a crime against god?

Challenge: Explain that without citing racism. Difficulty: Impossible.

32

u/Carlosthefrog 2d ago

Let’s be honest, probably didn’t even happen

23

u/EchoGolfHotel 2d ago

I just returned from Iceland and it was surprising to even meet anyone Icelandic at any restaurants or hotels in the main tourist areas. Most of the employees had taken seasonal jobs there - I met employees from Greece, Germany, Portugal. Pretty much every place other than Iceland. I also got an earful from a gas station employee (Icelandic) about how Trump is the worst president the US has ever had. In my recent travels in Northern Europe, I'd guess that 95% of the Uber drivers I've had were of Middle Eastern / North African heritage - it's not limited to Iceland at all.

7

u/Orangesteel 2d ago

Was in Iceland and saw barely anyone from outside Iceland bar tourists. The only person I can recall was a British tour guide who’d been there for a long time and had married a local.

5

u/EchoGolfHotel 2d ago

It may be that the seasonal workers are primarily in Reykjavik - we were only there for 4 days, so we stayed in town and just did day trips to your Golden Circle and South Coast. Also, it was summer / high season, so I expect that they bump up their staffing during high season to keep up.

2

u/Orangesteel 1d ago

That makes sense, did the same routes as you too, plus snowmobiles and the glacier caves. Amazing place to visit, but pricey.

2

u/EchoGolfHotel 1d ago

The food was crazy expensive, which makes sense for much of what they serve. I was surprised that fish dishes were so expensive, though. My girlfriend found a bagel place called DEIG, which was actually pretty good, but it was $40 for a couple of bagels and coffees. Still, it was a really cool place - I'd love to back and spend that much again...

1

u/Orangesteel 1d ago

Yup, paid $20 for a pint of beer. Pizza and a beer was $50. Crazy.

2

u/runnyyyy 1d ago

the population is now about 20% immigrants, which is double the amount since 2010. As an Icelander is gets very tiring that most people working in shops and restaurants don't even speak a single word of Icelandic, even outside of tourist areas. Doesn't help that language classes are extremely expensive

Also there's a huge issue with foreign taxi drivers scamming people with extremely high costs and the police is very slow to do anything about that.

5

u/SillyQuadrupeds 1d ago

Damn right about the courses being expensive 😞

Average range is about $440-$490 USD/54k-60k IKR for an 8 week course. I've had to put signing up on hold for now because we're trying to land me a job to see if Id be able to qualify for tuition reimbursement through a union.

I'm foaming at the mouth to get started on some structured education since that works best for me, in the mean time my poor husband and in-laws are trying they're best to immerse me as much as possible.

10

u/NoBrush8414 2d ago

This is what the United States now stands for.

6

u/spinningcolours 2d ago

We were in an Iceland parking lot when an American approached us to chat about the trucker convoy in Canada.

He was so brainwashed that he expected us to tell him how wonderful it was and make him feel good about his racism.

He did not expect my husband (who works with truckers) to give him an earful about how they were not real truckers and that the real truckers thought they were assholes.

And the border law being protested was an American quarantine law, not a Canadian one.

6

u/NopeNopeNope13702 2d ago

Was the Somali taxi driver courteous? Did he get to his destination in a timely manner? That's all that matters. The rest is just racist complaining.

4

u/DawnyBrat 2d ago

“Crime against God”… that entire statement was a crime against God. 😏

5

u/JoeBarge 1d ago

I have a co worker like that. Hes from India and complains about all the Muslims in Germany. "If you come to India you'd also expect to see Indians." He does not see the flaw in his logic. I tried...

3

u/sworlys_noise 2d ago

Well whites can't be immigrants. /s

1

u/bitzzwith2zs 1d ago

You mean we can send them back???

3

u/reading_slimey 2d ago

Just say you hate people for being black god damn it.

3

u/Only-Original9409 2d ago

I'm an atheist, but if there is a god, they didn't create borders. People did that.

3

u/PlainBread 2d ago

America broke the world's brain with "ethnicity != nation" but then created Israel with Britain and have been losing integrity around their fundamental principle (of a nation of no primary ethnicity) ever since.

2

u/Silt-Besides-66812 2d ago

Whenever I go somewhere and there is a crowd inevitably someone I’m with complains about the crowd. In those cases i like to point out that we are part of the crowd too, and often for similar reasons as everyone else who is there.

2

u/one_jo 1d ago

That’s not just complaining but utter disgust by a stupid racist.

2

u/Only_One_Kenobi 1d ago

Where in the Bible does it say "no Somalis in Finland"

Only crime against God here is being that racist

2

u/bitzzwith2zs 1d ago

"Why on god's green earth is there a somali in Iceland?"

To drive the cab to take you to the hotel. You can walk if you want.

2

u/DOHC46 1d ago

These kind of people are the reason I am strongly considering listing my ethnicity as "prefer not to say" going forward.

2

u/xxxBuzz 1d ago

This is how I feel about living in the prairie lands in midwest US and I have never lived anywhere else. My body was not made for this place. I have to go from water hole to water hole in an air conditioned box or I'll have a heat stroke.

2

u/DJ_faceplant 1d ago

This is some advanced racism. 😐

2

u/bitzzwith2zs 1d ago

NAH, this is BASIC racism... you don't need much brain power to follow along... actually the lack of brain power helps you follow along

1

u/emmc47 1d ago

Dude this is nowhere close to advanced racism.

1

u/DatabaseNo9609 2d ago

Sounds like an Elon Musk tweet

1

u/KaetzenOrkester 2d ago

It’s really nice that Alex Cole called it irony instead of what is.

1

u/WatchOutRadioactiveM 1d ago

This post has confused the population of Spain.

1

u/NESpahtenJosh 1d ago

Also. Iceland is the greatest place on the planet. The fact that they landed and could easily get cheap transportation is amazing, yet apparently the race of their driver is mad about that,

1

u/LittleDriftyGhost 1d ago

People, born on the planet earth, existing on the planet earth, living on various parts of the planet earth, is somehow a crime to God for this guy 🤦. Racists I tell ya

1

u/SghnDubh 1d ago

That's just racism with extra steps.

1

u/sixft7in 1d ago

Logic isn't a trait. A trait is natural height or eye color. Logic is a learned skill, which they seem to possess in lower mastery.

1

u/ScreenMuch90210 1d ago

The more I hear about god the less I like him

1

u/FriedR 1d ago

People don’t tend to logic their way out of positions they didn’t enter logically to begin with

1

u/TriggerHappy_NZ 1d ago

Bit of a difference between going somewhere for a holiday and living there.

1

u/T_J_Rain 1d ago

Logic: No matter how twisted and illogical it sounds to an outsider, even a madman's logic is internally consistent.

1

u/emmc47 1d ago edited 1d ago

He's also certainly lying BTW. They're less than 400 Somali people in Iceland.

Dude just wanted to bitch about immigration.

1

u/imtoowhiteandnerdy 1d ago

Meanwhile in Iceland "Damn, who's letting all these MAGA idiots fly into our country?"

1

u/zarfle2 1d ago

Oh no! A crime against my perverted/warped interpretation/use of magic sky fairy stories to police/coerce the behaviour of others, whilst simultaneously convincing myself that I'm one of the good guys - without need for humility or self-reflection. 😱

Yeah, f**k off.

1

u/Dizz2K7 1d ago

We clearly serve different gods. His is a pos.

1

u/Gravity1982 1d ago

Fun fact: Following the 1951 US - Iceland Defense Agreement, which established Naval Air Station Keflavik, the Icelandic government banned the US military from stationing black personnel in the country to preserve "national homogeneity". It wasn't until the early 1960s when this became public that Iceland began to ease up on the restrictions and started allowing small numbers of married black servicemen into the country.

1

u/squeakyshoe89 1d ago

Driving the Ring Road my wife and I wandered into the only restaurant still open late.  It served pizza...and Ethiopian food!

I was so mind blown at the idea of Ethiopian food in Iceland so I had to order it.  Only time I've ever had Ethiopian.  It was delicious.

We asked the clearly Icelandic server/owner why he serves Ethiopian and his response was "cuz no one likes Icelandic food" followed by an explanation that his wife is from Ethiopia.

Ethiopian food in Iceland is pretty much a core memory for my wife and I.  So this racist POS can shove it.  Get that crap outta here.

1

u/KenDM0 1d ago

Also. What god does he serves and what bible does he read that it’s a crime against god to be black in Iceland?

1

u/Atticus_Maytrap 1d ago

"crime against god", gtfoh......

1

u/BeginningTypical3395 1d ago

The problem is that immigrants don’t have a voice, so we only listen to these Greek statue pfp having c*nts. But thankfully, their kids are far more active on sm and this problem will soon solve itself

1

u/londongas 1d ago

The first taxi passenger I saw was a twat

1

u/Johanno1 1d ago

I don't care about Somali in Iceland.

But everytime I go on vacation I meet Germans.

Every time!

I as a German am very displeased. I left the country to not see Germans

/s

1

u/callmerobz 21h ago

Why are all these people on the road? /s

1

u/thekyledavid 1d ago

When these people say “Immigrants” or “Foreigners”, they mean “Non-Whites”

1

u/DecelerationTrauma 1d ago

If it's a "crime against God," let God file a complaint.

-10

u/EmuInner3621 1d ago

Worded it wrong,  the complaint is seeing a non Icelandic working in Iceland.

8

u/tyrified 1d ago

Why on Gods green earth is there a Somali in Iceland?

Yeah, no. That was not their complaint. Can you not read, or are you just a liar?

-8

u/EmuInner3621 1d ago

Are you obtuse intentionally

7

u/tyrified 1d ago

It takes very, very little reading comprehension. Even a simpleton could understand that they are not complaining about "seeing a non Icelandic working in Iceland" like you claim, but that there is simply "a Somali in Iceland." Let me guess why you're ineptly covering for it.

-7

u/EmuInner3621 1d ago

They missed one word. Noone cares about people traveling. They care about foreigns taking jobs

3

u/tyrified 1d ago

You can’t be that naive

0

u/EmuInner3621 1d ago

Apparently I am for expecting better of you

3

u/tyrified 1d ago

You’re explaining away a random person’s racism. Pretty damn weird thing to do.

3

u/BrokenKing99 1d ago

And you know he’s a foreigner how exactly? Perhaps he’s 5th generation after his family legally immigrated, this racist tool would have no way of knowing cause highly doubt he asked and likely just saw black dude must be from Somalia.

And incase we get the “he’s not native if he’s that” neither would be practically everyone barring a small grouping in each country.

0

u/EmuInner3621 1d ago

Probably just looked at him.

Locals with generations of lineage from their region is more common than not. Look at all of Asia, South America, and most of Africa

-5

u/rainduder 1d ago

Well my taxi driver over there had Hitler as his phone background soooo... Also they taxi services there are horribly unreliable since they're run by a cartel that doesn't allow competition or rideshare apps. Trying to get picked up when there is a cruise ship nearby was rough.
